wikiquote:British Columbia

Sri, I appreciate the work you have been doing, but there is still a lot of concern (not just from me) about the British Columbia page. The main concern is that most of the quotes on the page seem to have nothing to do with British Columbia, or to not be particularly about British Columbia. Are you under the impression that any notable quote by a notable British Columbian belongs on this page? If so, that's not the way things work at Wikiquote. I understand that you have a portal that you would like to maintain, and are trying to put the quotations in Wikiquote, which is fine and good, but the way to do it would be to set up separate pages from separate topics, and then cross-reference them from your portal. For instance, you could certainly have a page on Emily Carr, who is notable and whose quotes are notable. You could probably have a page about British Columbia too, but you would need to keep to topic on it (that is, only notable quotes clearly about British Columbia.

Going through the quotes on the page, here are my comments:

• Cedars are terribly sensitive...
  • Appears to be about cedars, which grow everywhere
• Come to the edge of the barn...
  • Not apparently about BC.
• Downstream ever further...
  • If I had to guess, I'd say this is about salmon. I can see where it might be about BC, but I'd need some context.
• It is wonderful to feel the grandness of Canada...
  • Seems to be about Canada. Yes, I know she lived in BC, but if she meant BC why did she say Canada? Much of what she says is true about other parts of Canada.
• Life's an awfully lonesome affair.
  • This is about life. I don't see the connection to BC
• Most of the Games..
  • First, this is about the games, not about BC (even though the games will be there). Second, it's not a very interesting quote from a quotability standpoint -- it's just marketing propaganda.
• owls in the beardusky woods
  • About owls? We have them too.
• Stand with Baillie-Grohman in 1882...
  • I don't know where most of those places are, but I'm prepared to believe this one is about BC.
• The flavour is its own reward...
  • Have no idea why this is about BC.
• There is something bigger than fact...
  • Again, if she's talking about BC we need some context.
• You always feel when you look it straight...
  • Isn't this about art?
• The coast of British Columbia was one of the three chief centers of aboriginal America.
  • About BC, but of no interest as a quote. It's just a fact.

If some of these (other than the one i mention) are really about BC, you need to explain why. The standard wikiquote format, which you haven't used, would be useful here. Here's an example:

• The hush of the forest in the still of the mountains.
  • explaining what he finds unique about British Columbia
  • John Doe, My Life, Erehwon Publishers, 2007

But the source had better bear out the fact that the person really is talking about some experience or quality unique to BC, not just an impression he happened to have just because he happened to be in BC or because he was born there. Ayyavazhi GAC Reassessed

User:SriMesh, User:Ncmvocalist had reassesed the Ayyavazhi article and had still clamed that the article lacks Good prose, MOS guidelines, Fair Use rationales, the article is not in focus, ect. He had also made suggestions. Can you please help in maintaining it.

Re: Ayyavazhi

I'm sure there are other articles that have managed to find a way of 'getting around' issues like the one that you have mentioned. However, if it is indeed impossible to make the prose both well written, and clear throughout the article (even with respect to these names), then the article is destined to staying at a B grade as it does not come up to the required standard of other articles that are at a higher grade.

So, instead of making a separate sentence for explaining that the name has changed, incorporate it into the previous sentence in which the name was used. So in effect, you should be tightening the expression of the article so that every sentence is focused on the heading under which you've written it, rather than having indirectly relevent sentences floating around. Eg; Instead of having "Ayyavazhi began to be noticed initially by the large number of people gathering to worship Vaikundar (birth name 'Mudisoodum Perumal' )[28] (1809 C.E – 1851 C.E)[29] at Poovandanthoppe. Poovandanthoppe is the name of a village now called Swamithoppe. The Thuvayal thavasu..." -> try "Ayyavazhi began to be noticed initially by the large number of people gathering at the village, Poovandanthoppe to worship Vaikundar...." So a reader can click on Poovandanthoppe and after being redirected to the Swamithoppe article, the first sentence states that Swamithoppe was previously known as Poovandanthoppe. Similarly, the fact that there is no article on Vaikundar is another major concern. Anyway, good luck! Ncmvocalist (talk) 04:02, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I completely agree in the case of Holy Trinity — although the idea that high schools are encyclopedically notable still personally makes me itch, the article does contain independent references and the education project does generally regard high schools as notable. For the non-free images, I was really thinking yesterday that the idea of posting them in the portal is against the policy. Most portals and even the main page do not post non-free images. When a song-related article is featured, they do not use the single's cover; instead, they use available free image used in the article—of course, nice images. I'm really interesting to be part of the project Wikipedia:WikiProject R&B and Soul Music, and I believe the portal is part of it. However, the project is dying, almost. Portal:R&B and Soul Music

{{helpme}} The thing most frustrating with the portal is that the images which are fair use for the articles, are not remaining on the portal which refers to the articles. I gave it a lookover, as did several others. I'm on the edge of failing it because its screwed up with MoS. If you want some opinions, the #wikipedia-en-roads IRC channel is where I am as well. Saskatchewan Highway 16

I am trying to tweak this article to make it a GA it is on hold. I have placename sizes via the latests census, but always re-stating that the date of the population was 2006 and the cite source is making a hard to read prosy article is there a better way of citing the facts to not get a fact tag, but still say the size of the village or hamlet? You can use <cite name="foo"/> if the item named 'foo' was already used before your use of it. So you can do something like <cite name="foo"> blah</cite> and later on in the article do <cite name="foo"/> and basically reuse the prior citation.. Hey! ok, that is basic wikimarkup... I'm not sure if there is a way round that. However you do have a few options here. First you can continue as you are doing now, putting that tag after each number. Saskatchewan highway shields

Hey. I fixed the Saskatchewan shield template in {{Infobox road}} to use a variation of Pomte's shield template on all articles. You can see it in action on Saskatchewan Highway 58. I'm also in the process of developing a Saskatchewan junction template (that, with some tricky code, could probably be expanded for any Canadian province) that will simplify the amount of code required to generate a junction table. No problem; I'll get to it in the morning. An en-dash is the first dash next to "Insert:" at the bottom of the editing page. It refers to a dash that has the width of a standard "n". Another way to insert an en-dash is to write out &ndashplus-a-semicolon. —Rob (talk) 04:03, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

As an additional note, one thing that might help out, especially in the area of 'completeness/broadness' with city articles is to become somewhat familiar with the city article guidelines at WP:USCITY and WP:UKCITIES. If the article is missing a several main sections from those guidelines, it fails the completeness criterion. Also, keep an eye out for sections with very little content (2-4 sentences), which indicates some completeness issues. Even a major section like history should have more than two paragraphs. The history section should tell the story of the development of the city, from ancient times (if the city's that old) to modern day. One thing I am seeing with a lot of recent articles is that they do a good job with history, but really skimp on recent history, cutting off largely around world war II, which leaves off about sixty years or so. I also went to Transport Canada and using the first box (Mark) I was able to identify some of the aircraft and updated the Commons pictures. Public Transit in Saskatchewan

Thank you for your invitation to join the Saskatchewan Project, because I created the Prince Albert Transit article, but unfortunately I really don't know much about the province. My task is a sort of "if you build it they will come" project, to create an entry for every public transit system in Canada. Because the quality and quantity of information available on the internet varies I have to rely on locals to contribute supplementary input that may not be available online and to take photographs of buses and terminals that I cannot supply. Perhaps you can help me contact a 'Saskapedian' (do you like this word?) who would be willing to upload photographs relating to the Category:Transit agencies in Saskatchewan and also the Saskatchewan Transportation Company. Thank you for the pictures. I have used three edited versions in the Saskatoon Transit article. What I have to do with many of my own photographs is trim off the asphalt in the foreground, otherwise objects can seem to float. For the downtown terminal I simply removed that excess and changed it into a 16x9 widescreen format, which I find to be pleasant dimensions (like HDTV). The other two pics focus on buses in different paint schemes; the current one for the infobox and the old one in 'Fleet'. Julia, cooperation like this is what makes Wikipedia enjoyable. Hi. I've made changes that could be made per your suggestions. Most of what you said should definitely be incorporated or at least touched upon in the article. However, there is a lack of sources (at least those accessible online) on the influence of this road on the communities around it. In terms of construction and paving, I don't think there is anything noteworthy about this particular case as it is a regular minor rural highway. Anyway, please have a look at the article again to see if it is good enough. We will definitely try and add your suggestions over time as sources are found (which may require a trip to a local public library or historical society). It would appear that he doesn't meet the criteria for notabiliy as he's never competed in a fully professional league or played at the highest level of amateur competition where as Brent Bobyck has played professional hockey. I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you were looking for, but I'm not very good at article writing, so I made a graphic. It's a map that shows all the villages along with Saskatchewan Highway 11:

It's in a vector format, so you can resize it as you see fit. I used the colors defined by the MOS for maps, but I can change them if you wish.

Saskatchewan Portal Issue Still Unresolved

I have looked over the Saskatchewan portal and can't figure out how to make it so it fits on the page. It still is stretching the page. I have looked at other portals like Iceland and New South Wales and all their content fits well on the page without stretching it. I have read your comments on the Saskatchewan Portal talk page about you having a wide screen monitor. Now I think the portal should fit nicely on the page regardless of the reasons. A lot of people do use 1024x768 setting for their monitor. Besides, it would look much better if it was back to the width it originally was while still having the current layout. Mr. C.C. A Few Items

1. Thanks for fixing that. It didn't look right with cellpadding and cellspacing. Thanks again for fixing that.
2. You do a lot with Canadian articles and you deserve the award.
3. Also take a look at the new colours on the WP: SKCN navigation template. I wanted to use the colours on the Saskatchewan flag. Tell me what you think.
4. Have been adding stuff the WP: SKCN Assesment Department and added a list of B-Class articles. If there are other articles for FA, GA, or start class, than add them in.
5. I added some article class icons to the Saskatchewan Assesment Department.
6. I want it to get done so Assesments for WP: SKCN can get started.
