Infoboxes[edit]

I see the usage of two different infoboxes. Which one is best for Speed Skaters' biographies? {{Infobox Speed Skater}} as seen on Apolo Ohno or {{Infobox sportsperson}} as seen on Ahn Hyun-Soo. It should be consistent, so it's possible to modify the Speed Skater to include more information. on camera^(t) 23:41, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have actually started switching some of the infoboxes for Canadian speed skaters over and for two specific reasons.

1.) In this way both the medal box and info box are of equal sizes in all screen formats. Not only this but it presents a cleaner more 'professional look'.

2.) Secondly it actually formats well and fits in with most of the other winter sports competitors. For most of us working on Canadian athletes we have started using headercolor = #99bdcc , I don't know the actual reason for this colour but I believe it was done under the pretenses that it was more "wintery"? I dunno, I hated it at first because people were using a brighter blue but they've toned it down and I prefer it to the brown. Any other editors from other nations should feel free to use a colour of their choice but I would guess it would be good to standardise it.

3.) Thirdly every other winter sport has made the change, to me it looks like we are dragging our heels on this while others switch over. I question both the merits and reasoning of why we should be the exception.

In closing I would add that the old boxes are outdated and the Sportsperson box is cleaner, modern, and more presentable. I vote we switch over as I have already started doing. All information like personal bests etc, should and still can be transported over into the new boxes. You can actually keep all the same info that was in the Speed Skater box and move it over without penalty to the Sportsperson box, which is what I'm advocating for. I'm not advocating for increased "redundant" information but it's important to remember that many people will read these pages only in glancing, hence the infoboxes, we should use the standard sports boxes. Well, changes to infobox speed skater could be done without having to go one-by-one and change all the articles that use it. That would be a long process, so if we make the changes, perhaps it'd be better to edit {{Infobox speed skater}} itself and that will save the time (except for making the adjustments of moving the medals into the infobox). And we can make the color standardized so it isn't "nation by nation" but one color for all skaters. What I don't like about {{Infobox sportsperson}} is the "Sport" section, that looks generic... which is why I'd rather we have our own template. And with medals being in the tables, I suggest we do not collapse the medals as I rather think it's important to show if a skater has won a lot of medals for the viewer to get that immediately. I am agreeing with your reasons for a modernization, but that we still use {{Infobox speed skater}} but with substantial changes? And one more code-related thing, in {{Infobox sportsperson}} the code for the image must be changed for an "alt text" to be added so that when an article is nominated for feature-class, they don't complain about the image not having an alt tag. Ya I can agree with that, my primary concerns are addressed as above, to due with the formatting concerns, and modernisation. I agree with you on the content issue and how it is portrayed, I don't think it would require substantial changes to the info box but there is definitely some "roll up the sleeves let's get to work" matters involved there. I think if we look at the Figure Skating infobox that's pretty much what we are going for, only with the Speed Skating content, and non-collapsed medal boxes. Those are changes we could make, or I think you got someone else to set up the info box for us earlier? Perhaps we could get them to do the editing and additions for us again? Ok, we'll wait a couple of days to see if anyone else has ideas about the remodeled infobox. And with the figure skating one, I don't like the ISU results tab, but we could use Titles instead for Worlds, WC Overall Titles... and we'll probably want to figure out exactly what we want before we go and ask those who are knowledgeable in infobox structures to make the changes for us, that way, they're not confused. on camera^(t) 01:41, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

World Cup Medals/Results[edit]

And I have a question, I noticed on articles like Simon Cho, that World Cup race medals were being added to the medal table. Does anyone think we should have some sort of results table for this? Because I think adding medals for the individual World Cup event races would really add too many medals... Something similar to Kim_Yu-Na#Detailed_results but with a tab for each race (includes if they made it to the finals, the times, etc instead of the SP and FS columns)... I don't know if that would be too much work to update, but it would give a means to add medal results and make a wider use of pages like 2010–11 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup‎. on camera^(t) 01:41, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

One of my absolute pet peeves is people putting World Cup results in the medal boxes. They really should not go there, having a place for world cup and other results is fine, although I would prefer to limit it to World Cup victories, something like the results table for Alexandre Bilodeau. Well I think that would be up to us, I have run into complaints where people wanted those results there. However I think in the case of speed skating and short track and the fact that these athletes compete in multiple distances I think we start running into the clutter factor. The same thing could happen with World Cup victories alone, I don't know how it's going to play out but seeing as some athletes have won up to 6 events in a single distances alone over the season, add that over a 8 year or so career, plus multiple distances, could be messy. Someone has already listed all of the World Cup results for Catriona Le May Doan. So if we want to see an example of what a 6 year career can do for the clutter factor we can look there, results would get amplified for multi-distance skaters or short-track speed skaters. I'm still advocating for World Cup wins only, various world cup results would be available on speed skating pages, and section could be listed as to total World Cup medal tallies, etc. That being said a list of this length would be quite fair to me, it's if it would double or triple that it could start to be unreadable. Wow, that is a huge list. I'm still uncertain what to do about World Cup victories. I think WC wins only would be best and if anyone wants to include more, then they can summarize and write out a paragraph for that year's WC. You're right. I work on tennis articles a lot and they use tables somewhat similar to those on Brittany Schussler to list the results. I do agree with, User:OnCamera that the ultimate kind of resultslisting should be somewhat like the statistics page of Roger Federer, but that is hard to update for every skater there is with so few wikipedians who work on speedskater-bio's. www skateresults com[edit]

I'd like to bring to this projects attention that there are currently 327 articles having external links to www skateresults com (I'm avoiding a fully functional link). This site currently contains advertisments for "girls from Ukraine" rather than actual skate results. And while I don't have anything against Ukraine, links to this site currently has to be considered as spam not in line with WP:EL. Like any Wiki project page it is always about upgrading page quality, creating pages of new speed skaters and working on international competition pages. While additionally it works as a way to negotiate dilemmas and debates between different standards such as issues in infoboxes. Thats my opinion anyways. Don't know what the main focus is. It's currently somewhat off-season, but I suppose the ISU World Cup coming up in November and the Winter Olympics in February could be something worth looking into, if you're thinking of contributing. I see that you're from Norway (greitt!). Maybe you could check World Cup articles from previous seasons, and see if there are some Norwegian speed skater bios that could be created or expanded. Page renaming[edit]

Hello project.

I'd like rename a few pages, because the current names seem to be a bit clunky to me, but before getting overly bold, I thought I'd drop you a note.

Among other things, the "ISU" part is missing on the pages on the various distances and events.

For the ISU Speed Skating World Cup various distance pages, I'd like to rename the subpages along these lines:

2008–09 Speed Skating World Cup/100 m Men -> 2008–09 ISU Speed Skating World Cup – Men's 100 meters
2008–09 Speed Skating World Cup/5000&10.000 m Men -> 2008–09 ISU Speed Skating World Cup – Men's 5000 and 10000 meters

Request for input[edit]

Hi.

I need input on how to name the pages on the various race weekends in the ISU Speed Skating World Cup. I have renamed the distance/event pages according to the above, but I'm a little unsure how to name the race weekend pages. There are a couple of alternatives:

20xx–yy ISU Speed Skating World Cup – Competition 1 – currently used for the 2008–09 season articles,
20xx–yy ISU Speed Skating World Cup – Weekend 1,
20xx–yy ISU Speed Skating World Cup – World Cup 1 – currently used for the 2009–10 season articles.

We need uniformity. Which is best? Other suggestions?

I agree that the third option is the best. This is also how the Biathlon pages are named. And individual (weekend) events are very commonly referred to as World Cups. World Cup is used both to mean a specific event and the collection of events. Ravendrop 16:58, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ps. Note that the early editions of the World Cup seasons, there were separate world cup weekends because of different arenas for ladies and men but with the same world cup weekend number, see this page for world cup season 1987/88. Nation pages[edit]

Hi all, a while ago I started creating the nation pages for the 2015 World Single Distance Championships pages. I now changed the pages that also the results of the Sprint WC are listed and the Alround results can be listed. Hmm, by the look of the article that has been added together as one. What about changing the article to a yearly season article per country in speed skating which contain the same headings as now but also includes the national teams in speed skating, national championships and national cups and maybe also deaths and births of the speed skaters of the respective country. Hi Migrant, yes I merged the articles, because I think nations pages about the Sprint and Allround world championships are a bit to much as there are only 2 events per championships. I think what you say to create country pages would be a good idea. What do you think the title must become? Something like NATION in (during?) the 2014-15 speed skating season? For me your article-name suggestion with in is suitable for me, but i must say that I am extremely little active in this wikipedia-language, so i'll leave the deciding to other speedskating-wikipedian who is more active here than me. Ps1. Other thing to include in that article is new national records and maybe elections of the national related Speed skating main association like KNSB in Holland, NSA in Norway, DSU in Denmark and so on. Ps2. I am working mostly in NO:WPs little bit bigger project which also includes : figure skating, short track speed skating, roller skating/inline and roller derby skating + these sports referees at international championships and national and international organisationleaders. New Wikidata-property for Speed Skaters just made[edit]

Hello, I just got confirmed that a Suggestion for Speedskatingbase.eu ID got through as a new wikidata-property as number Speedskatingbase.eu ID. It is for mostly all notable speed skaters and it includes personal best times, birth date and gender, allthough there could be some few errors as it is in other large databases too. Good luck in using the property for the best use in your wikipedia, since I mostly do my edits on the norwegian bokmål-version, I don't know how you will use it here. Long track naming[edit]

Hi. I've come across a CfD from 2011 deleting Category:2011 in long track (motorcycling) which effectively puts the whole of the Category:long track hierarchy in limbo. Categorsing long track and short track[edit]

Can anyone help me figure out how to structure the category relationship between short-track and long-track speed skating? I am new to this topic, and have found myself a bit confused while populating the by-nationality subcats of Category:Male speed skaters and Category:Female speed skaters.

The head article speed skating covers both. There are separate sub-articles for long track speed skating and short track speed skating.

The current category setup has Category:Speed skating, covering all the long track speed skating stuff: players, competitions, etc.

We also have Category:Short track speed skating, covering short track speed skating: players, competitions, etc.

It seems to me that there are two ways of looking at this:

Short-track and long-track are separate sports, and should be categorised separately
Short-track is a variant of the older long-track form, and should be treated as a sub-topic

The current categories reflect a hybrid of the two approaches. Some aspects of short-track are sub-categories of speed-skating, but others are not. I am happy to work with either approach, but hope that a consensus can reached on which route to follow.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool[edit]

Short track 3000m Superfinal[edit]

Four Continents Championships[edit]

This year, the ISU has organized a Four Continents Championships in long track and short track speed skating for the first time. I have created items for these on Dutch Wikipedia and WikiData:

Since the ISU has organized the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships for over twenty years, that championship is more well known (for example: Four Continents Championships links to Four Continents Figure Skating Championships). Template:World Speed Skating Championships[edit]

Hello speed skating friends. I have a little problem with this Template:World Speed Skating Championships. Since it really doesn't show properly the difference in the organizing of the championships from 2020 and onwards since it is either a combined sprint together with combined allround or a single distance with teamcompetition championships. And then there are the team sprint-competition which are moving from the single distance championships to the combined sprint and combined allround-edition since these two variants are being arranged biannually. How can we make this more clear in the template ?

And since we already have listed some unofficial championships for amateurs what about the professional championships from the early days and the ISSL- and WISO-championships ? Mistakes in ranking points[edit]

Sorry in this entry https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_skating_at_the_2022_Winter_Olympics_–_Qualification I think there’s some mistakes in the ranking points because the rules of classification says that’s one NOC can earn 3 qualified skaters in each event only if the 3 skaters are in the top 20 ranking. User script to detect unreliable sources[edit]

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments[edit]

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Major RfC on capitalization of all our articles[edit]

I thought this was a done deal back in this 2022 RFC but obviously not. A handful of editors did another rfc with no sports projects input at all. And it's being challenged because we just noticed it. This could affect almost every single tennis and Olympic article we have, and goodness know how many other sports. Some may have already been moved it you weren't watching the article. And not just the article titles will be affected but all the player bios that link to the articles. Sure the links would be piped to the right place if thousands of articles moved, but if the wording in a bio still said 2023 Wimbledon Championships – Men's singles or Swimming at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 metre backstroke that would likely need to be changed by hand. There is also talk of removing the ndash completely.

Perhaps this is what sports projects want and perhaps not. Either way I certainly don't want projects ill-informed as the last RfC was handled. Express your thoughts at the following rfc. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:03, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
