Scope[edit]

I think this WikiProject could expand its scope to not only to countries but also to include country subdivisions.--Zer0~Gravity (Roger - Out) 00:48, 18 December 2007 (UTC) Good suggestion. Were you thinking of subdivisions of a particular country? And were you thinking of cities, of which there are hundreds of thousands, or departments/provinces/states within federal states? In any case, it would be a lot of work to do.--Mschiffler (talk) 05:10, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added New York City water supply system, for starters, in that department. Daniel Case (talk) 14:45, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging[edit]

I don't normally add WikiProject templates when I'm not a member, but I was reviewing your articles for 1.0 and noticed that you didn't have tagged the two articles linked from your template (Water supply and Sanitation). I've added a tag for each - these are the most important ones for us to include in any offline release! Maybe you could also consider broadening the scope to include things associated with water treatment, etc.? Please revert my tagging if I misunderstood the project scope. By the way, I'm really glad this topic is covered by a WikiProject - often on WP we devote more effort to video games or TV shows than major topics like this one. Keep up the good work! Walkerma (talk) 02:06, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your suggestion. Actually it may make more sense to limit this project to sector profiles of water and sanitation in countries and sub-divisions of countries.--Mschiffler (talk) 15:18, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Australia[edit]

Hi I'm a brand new wikiperson planning to do some Australian water research. I'm starting an Australian Water Supply page in my sandbox. Melange42 (talk) 05:52, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking forward to seeing the draft Australia article in your sandbox. I'd be happy to help you while it evolves.--Mschiffler (talk) 15:27, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime I have created Water supply and sanitation in Australia.--Mschiffler (talk) 15:20, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Water quality[edit]

I notice very little information about quality standards for drinking water or effluent discharges in most articles supported by this project. I have been developing Drinking water quality standards with the aim of eventually including a paragraph for each country or block of countries. I would welcome contributions, would encourage inclusion of quality informations in project articles and would especially welcome cross references between the drinking water quality article and article in this project. If editors could also point me to information worth linking to or worth including, I would be grateful.  Velella  Velella Talk   16:08, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. There is little information on standards in the articles. Many developing countries base their drinking water quality standards on the WHO guidelines, so there is probably not much diversity to be found there. For wastewater treatment standards there seems to be more diversity between countries. Wastewater discharge standards in Latin America gives some examples. Beyond standards, I would find it interesting to add more information about actual water quality to the existing water sector profiles, but unfortunately this information is rarely published in most developing countries where the issue is obviously more acute than in rich countries.--Mschiffler (talk) 19:51, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: merge/move. I'm not going to perform the merge or move as it's not clear that this is the best way to conduct the merge. -- tariqabjotu 22:34, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by countryWikipedia:WikiProject Water/supply and sanitation by country – I think that two low activity projects with the same scope, only differing on if it focused on countries or not, should be merged together. The by country project would become the country task force of the other project 65.92.181.190 (talk) 08:23, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Survey[edit]

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • Support. For me it is not important where the page is located, so I am neutral. If someone else feels it should be moved and no one objects, let us do it.--Mschiffler (talk) 15:28, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. I'm not sure that a requested move is the best way to merge wikiprojects, but let's not get bogged down in process pedantry over relatively inactive pages. I think that a merger would make sense. bobrayner (talk) 15:42, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment there are two other open WPP mergers (taskforcifying) at RM right now, and many more this year have gone through it. -- 65.92.181.190 (talk) 06:24, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. My only concern is with balance. Merger is fine as long as in-stream uses like transportation, hydro-power, and aquatic habitats receive equal emphasis with consumptive uses of water.Thewellman (talk) 02:00, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • 'Comment I think hydro power is covered by WP:ENERGY, but this project's focus is water supply and water sanitation (ie. sewage), as can be seen from its mission statement on the project page. Aquatic habitats are not evident in the purpose statement. An expansion of the scope of the by country project/taskforce would require a separate discussion. (and possible further rename to WP:WikiProject Water/by country) As WP:WikiProject Water's mission statement is also consumptive water use, you may wish to start by expanding its scope. -- 65.92.181.190 (talk) 06:24, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Any additional comments:

I acknowledge the more restrictive uses of water identified within the present project name; and merely wished to point out the proposed renaming and merger would encompass a broader subject matter. Aquatic habitat may not be within the present scope of WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country, but it is within the scope of WikiProject Water as indicated by WikiProject Environment as a parent project. Energy efficient water transportation (including canal locks) is similarly within the scope of parent WikiProject International Development. WikiProject Water is certainly an appropriate parent project for WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country as suggested. If merger is desired, preservation of present focus might be aided by designation of a Water supply and sanitation task force within WikiProject Water.Thewellman (talk) 18:37, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The current WP:WATSAN (WikiProject Water) scope does not indicate that aquatic habitats are within its scope either, since it's mission statement is The goal of this project is to improve the quality, scope and number of articles related to water supply, sanitation and purification. However, the project itself seems to want to expand its scope, as indicated in unterminated discussions on its talk page. What this larger scope will become is not currently indicated on the project page, showing that the scope expansion has not yet occurred. WPWATER became part of WPENVIRONMENT when its scope expanded from water purification to include water supply and sewage in 2006 (as shown on the talk page) -- 65.92.181.190 (talk) 06:20, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Water WikiProject was originally focused more narrowly and is being edited to reflect a broader interdisciplinary approach. At issue here are the relative benefits of merging two existing projects or maintaining separation. I suggest focus on the interdisciplinary aspects of water may be unnecessarily sacrificed for unspecified benefits of merger with a more narrowly focused project.Thewellman (talk) 18:46, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The current focus of both projects is relatively the same. An expansion of WP:WATER to a larger scope does not impact the merge proposal, since it would still cover the same areas, and more, while this project is very narrowly focused on country articles (per its mission statement). The proposed task force name reflects the current focus of this project (notice that it says "sanitation and supply"). Should you also expand the focus of the taskforce to match the proposed expansion of WPWATER (which according to its project page has not yet occurred) then you can rename the task force to WP:WikiProject Water/by country per the comment previously lodged. As for merging the projects, both projects are very low activity, and the current focus of both is the same, so a growth in the total population of interested editors can only help both projects. As very few topics have a "topic project" and a "topic by country project" (I think this is the only one; WPP Irrigation By Country was deleted; all the other "by country" groupings are workgroups or taskforces), such a merger would be inline with the current division of labor according to wikiprojects that focus on a topic area, instead of focusing on a type of article for a topic area. And if you look at wikiprojects that have taskforces, all taskforces are more narrowly focused than their parent projects, so whatever expansion of WPWATER, that does not need to impact on the focus of the taskforce. -- 65.92.181.190 (talk) 05:42, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live![edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Pageview stats[edit]

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the Tool Labs tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 02:56, 14 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for this! Sorry for not replying earlier. It was me who made that request but only saw your note here now. Thanks again. EvM-Susana (talk) 09:40, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Closure of project and re-tagging to WikiProject Water ?[edit]

Re this edit (and many similar), is this a correct change? Has one project been subsumed by the other? Andy Dingley (talk) 16:23, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your question. I was involved in these changes (although not at the start of the projects). If I understand right, it's like this: A WikiProject called "Water supply and sanitation" was started many years ago. However, it consisted mainly of two things only: Water on the one side; and articles on "water supply and sanitation by country" on the other side. A year ago we started a new Wikiproject called: Sanitation, see here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Sanitation. At that time it was decided to rename the old project from "water supply and sanitation" to simply "water" (User:Doc James helped with making that change). Then there is also the WikiProject on "water supplay and sanitation by country". This project was focussed on doing up a standardized description of the water supply and sanitation situation in each country (it was once funded by WSP from Worldbank but not anymore). When you look at the list of popular pages for this project (here), you see that there are projects on there which were tagged with the project but which don't actually deal with the topic. That's why myself and User:mll_mitch have changed the tags. Does this clarify things? - However, I have to say that it is a bit confusing because there seems to be no template tag specifically for the project "water supply and sanitation by country" so we had to use "water supply and sanitation" tag which then redirects to there. EvMsmile (talk) 01:30, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What an unnecessary muddle. Why start "WikiProject Sanitation" when this project, about water supply and sanitation already existed? The former project should be merged (or redirected) to this one, which should be moved back to "Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation". The claim that Wikiproject Water supply and sanitation "consisted mainly of two things only" is clearly bogus, as you've just removed its tag from a large number of other relevant articles. Since WikiProject Water claims it was "originally named WikiProject Water and sanitation", it too should be merged here. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:00, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's a muddle, but I don't agree with your proposed way forward. In fact, I don't even understand what you're proposing exactly, can you spell it out clearly please? The project "water supply and sanitation" had basically no content on sanitation but only on water supply. Also water supply and sanitation are two different topics so there was no benefit at all in keeping them together in one. As you can see on both projects they are rather dormant (i.e. the WikiProject Water is dormant; the WikiProject "Water supply and sanitation by country" is a a bit more active). The only project that is really active right now is the WikiProject Sanitation. Also I think "merging" projects creates more problems than it solves. What is the main problem right now? You don't like that we removed some tags from some articles? It is not a huge number. If it really bothers you so much, then the tags could be put back in. But the articles that you were referring to were on water topics, not on sanitation topics and cleary not on "water supply and sanitation by country" topics, which is why we changed the tags accordingly. - I think more importantly it would be to get active in any of the three projects and to help them fulfill their goals. EvMsmile (talk) 12:03, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I wasn't involved in the earlier work here, it was User:Mschiffler who was. See what he wrote here in 2007: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Water_supply_and_sanitation&action=history " (moved Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation to Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country: The new title better reflects the scope of the WikiProject, which is narrower than the original title suggested.)". Note there is also this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Water_and_sanitation&redirect=no . See on history page of that page a comment from 2010: " (moved Wikipedia:WikiProject Water and sanitation to Wikipedia:WikiProject Water: It should be 'water', instead.) " So the bottom line is that many people over the years have tried to "sort this out". I think the current set up of having a dedicated project called "Sanitation" is just fine. - could you explain what your concern and interest is? Would you like to get involved content wise which would be great? Why does the issue about the tags worry you? EvMsmile (talk) 12:09, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages[edit]

Greetings WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Popular pages report[edit]

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

WikiProject merger[edit]

Hi. Please see this thread for discussions on a possible merger of the below three projects:

Thanks, Rehman 12:51, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Merger take 2? Or retiring this project[edit]

Hi all. It seems like folks have reservations about merging the three projects under a single banner and the conversation kind of petered out. Taking a look through pages tagged for this project (of which there are 320) it seems to be about half articles and categories of the format "Water supply and sanitation in XXXXX", and half a random mix of sanitation and water articles. This project is clearly very quiescent. How would folks feel about retiring this project, marking its pages as historical, and transferring its talk page tags to either {{WikiProject Sanitation}} and/or {{WikiProject Water}} (this would probably require human judgment. I'm happy to do this manually)? The proposed benefits are (1) if some editor is interested in the topic and follows the links from the talk page to the project, they're slightly more likely to hit a project page with active editors, and (2) if some editor has questions about a topic or needs a hand, they're more likely to actually find a human willing to help. Thoughts? Ajpolino (talk) 04:51, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging conversation participants from the earlier conversation @Rehman, Andy Dingley, EMsmile, WhatamIdoing, Thewellman, Doc James, Qzekrom, and Furicorn:. Sorry if I missed anyone. We're having the conversation here since this project is the primary focus of the proposal/question. Ajpolino (talk) 04:55, 21 April 2019 (UTC) [reply]

I think we should follow the agreement we had reached here, rather than start a new discussion here now, unless something has changed? My understanding was that a concensus was reached but that nobody had the time or energy to implement the solution that we had agreed on (something I was concerned about all along because it's time consuming and may have less impact than adding one's time to actual editing of articles...). EMsmile (talk) 10:08, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
After reading back through that discussion, I'm not sure what exactly there is consensus to do. Everyone seems to have a different idea of what the point of the merger is, and how it should be carried out. I thought this proposal to retire an inactive project might be a bit more straightforward, and get mostly the same benefit of the proposed merger without the hassle of changing the project pages or templates for Wikipedia:WikiProject Sanitation (which, in my estimation, is the only active project of the three). If folks (which here might just mean you and I...) feel differently I'm happy to be told to sit back down. Cheers Ajpolino (talk) 01:30, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is a fairly clear consensus that had emerged (namely to merge all 3 projects into one, and we had already agreed on the new name; there was perhaps still disagreement which project should be the "base" project - I was arguing for WikiProject Sanitation to be the base project). The problem was that nobody had the time to act on this. - But if your proposed route is more straight forward and you have time/energy to do this, then for me it would be fine if you went ahead like you proposed. It would be like a two-step process: First merge this project into WikiProject Sanitation, later merge the WikiProject Water as well and give the new bigger project a new name. So please don't sit down but go ahead and be bold. ;-) EMsmile (talk) 09:50, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country is closed for business. Its talk page tags have been transferred to either {{WikiProject Water}} (which now supports class and importance ratings and has a table of articles on its home page) or {{WikiProject Sanitation}}. Those who stumble upon this page who are interested in the topic should look to one of those projects to find similarly minded editors. Thanks! Ajpolino (talk) 19:34, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
