North–South Expressway Northern Route

North-South Expressway (NSE) Northern Route, E1 is the northern part of Malaysia's longest expressway, the North-South Expressway. It is situated on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, linking the northern states of Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Terminii

The NSE Northern Route begins at the Malaysian-Thai Border in the north. Its southern terminus is at the Jalan Duta exit in Kuala Lumpur.

Landmarks

Its main landmarks include the Penang Bridge which is Malaysia's longest bridge, Sungai Perak Bridge (Jambatan Sultan Azlan Shah) and the Menora Tunnel.

Current developments

Jelapang toll plaza and Ipoh Selatan toll plaza will be demolished in 2007 to make a non-stop route across Ipoh. The decision to demolish both toll plazas were made as a result of the accidents happened at Jelapang toll plaza where most of them involved heavy vehicles. Since the toll plaza was opened in 1985, there were many accident cases at Jelapang toll plaza which involved heavy vehicles which had brake failures due to hard braking when proceeding downhill to the toll plaza.

In addition, the 6-lane stretch which is currently running from Kuala Lumpur (including NKVE) to Rawang will be expanded to Slim River.
