It defined the format as being bytes in rgb format (At 8 bit per channel, so three bytes per pixel), when in fact it is even less defined than that. Whether a given file is three channels at 8bits each, or one greyscale channel at 24 bit is completely unknowable. A 16bit greyscale raw image file will be assumed as a 2-channel, 8bit per channel format. So, you need to know a lot about the file to open it, if it is without meta data. undo
