Production
Development
In September 2007, while still working on the Vikram-starrer Bheema, Linguswamy had mentioned, that Karthi Sivakumar will be acting in his next film, which would be action oriented and would be launched in January 2008.[3] In October 2007 then, sources reported, that Linguswamy is planning to make a bilingual film to be released in both Tamil and Telugu with Chiranjeevi's son, Ram Charan Teja and Karthi in the lead roles.[4][5] Later it was again reported, that Linguswamy's next project will feature Vishal as the protagonist after it was stated, that it would be Jayam Ravi to enact the lead character in his film.[6][7]
After having completed and released Bheema in January 2008, Linguswamy was set to begin his next venture very soon. In March 2008 then, again reports claimed, that his next project will be an entertainer with equal doses of love and action, which will have actor Karthi in the lead role. Further more, it was reported, that Linguswamy was still working on the script of the film, which would feature the "main crew members" of Bheema, including music director Harris Jayaraj, cinematographer R. D. Rajasekhar and editor Anthony and which was yet to be titled.[8]
The film was initially titled Kuthirai, however was later renamed as Paiya.[9] Due to various reasons, the launch of the got delayed again and again, before shooting of the film finally started in December 2008.
Casting
In July 2008, actress Nayantara was signed for the female lead role in Paiya for a record salary of 1 crore rupees. However she walked out of the film in December 2008, due to the director's reduction of salary due to series of flops recently. She was subsequently replaced by Tamannaah Bhatia, who was signed for 80 lakhs, despite early indications that Trisha Krishnan would bag the role.[10]
Filming
The shoot for the film began on December 24, 2008 at a highway near Bangalore.[11]
In May 2009, a song ("Suthudhe Suthudhe Boomi"), choreographed by Sabeena Khan, was shot at Prasad Studios in Chennai, where a grand set had been erected by art director Rajeevan. The song is said to feature computer graphics and visual effects. The shooting of the song is being held in the sets, while the background will change to "dense forests and lush mountain ranges" using the effects.[12] In October 2009, a rain song ("Adada Mazhaida"), featuring Karthi and Tamannaah, was shot at the Athirappilly waterfalls in Kerala, where earlier scenes and songs from other films such as Punnagai Mannan and Iruvar were filmed.[13]
