MKE Ankaragücü, (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈankaɾaɟydʒy]; full name Makina Kimya Endüstrisi Ankaragücü) is a Turkish sports club based in the Turkish capital Ankara. Ankaragücü's football team is currently playing in the Süper Lig. The direct translation is: 'Ankara Force'. Home ground is named as Ankara 19 Mayıs Stadium. She also played Second League in periods of 1968-1969, 1976-1977 and 1978-1981 and won Turkish Cup twice. She was second level team during winning of Turkish Cup in 1981 and promoted to First League by Kenan Evren's order despite she didn't promote to this league after finishing second behind of Sakaryaspor at Group B in 1980-81 season.[1]. Ankaragücü had a basketball team which played in Turkish Basketball League between 1970-1975. In addition, Ankaragücü has a women volleyball team which got promoted to Turkey Women's Volleyball First League in 2008-2009 season.
History
Ankaragücü is an Ankara club, but it was founded in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul in 1904 under the historical name of "Altin Örs Idman Yurdu". This team played in Friday League in Istanbul. The club was later moved to the capital city, Ankara. There are some theories about this move. One of them is that during Turkish War of Independence the team moved from Istanbul to Ankara and another one is that in 1910 the players of the team in Zeytinburnu were divided and followed two separate leaders (Şükrü Abbas and Agah Orhan). The Şükrü Abbas group left the club and formed "Turan Sanatkaran gücü". This date is accepted as the establishment day of Ankaragücü. During World War I both teams sent players for war efforts. After the war both teams united and moved the team to the capital city and formed "AS-FA Gücü". After 1948, the "Ankaragücü" name has become the official name.
