Nicola Maria Roberts (born 5 October 1985) is an English singer, songwriter, actress, model and entrepreneur.
Roberts rose to fame in 2002 after auditioning for the ITV reality television programme Popstars: The Rivals and winning a place in the girl group Girls Aloud. The group was one of the few UK reality television acts to achieve continued success, amassing a joint fortune of £25 million by May 2009. With Girls Aloud, Roberts has been successful in achieving a string of 20 consecutive UK top ten singles (including four number ones), two UK number one albums, and received nominations for five BRIT Awards, winning Best Single in 2009 for "The Promise". Girls Aloud announced that they would take a break to pursue solo projects.
Nicola Roberts has become well known for her red hair and fair skin. She created her own make-up range entitled Dainty Doll, targeted towards people with pale skin tones. She advocated a ban on the use of sunbeds by minors.
Life and career
1985–2001: Early life and Popstars
Nicola Roberts was born and raised in Runcorn, Cheshire. She has one sister, Frankie, and two brothers, Harrison and Clayton. Roberts says that she holds family values close to her heart and tries to visit often in order to stay close (as seen in Girls Aloud: Off the Record and The Passions of Girls Aloud). Roberts started her career singing with a girl group at her local discotheque with a local DJ. The group performed under the name 'The 5 Musketers', which was later reported to have been a name suggestion in the early stages of 'Girls Aloud's development. She also attended Olwen Grounds school of Dance, where she sang solos to small audiences in the Queens Hall in Widnes, Cheshire. Roberts dated her childhood boyfriend Carl Egerton until their split in 2006.[2]
In 2002, Nicola Roberts auditioned for the ITV1 reality television programme Popstars: The Rivals, the second British series of the international Popstars franchise. The series' goal was to create two winning pop groups - a boy band and a girl group, each consisting of five members who would then partake in "a battle of the sexes" as they vie for the Christmas number one on the UK Singles Chart.[3] Several thousand applicants attended auditions across the UK in hope of being selected. In the end, ten girls and ten boys were chosen as finalists by judges Louis Walsh, Pete Waterman, and Geri Halliwell. These finalists then took to the stage, participating in weekly Saturday night live performances (alternating weekly between the girls and boys). Roberts did not initially make the final ten; she was chosen to replace Nicola Ward, who decided to quit.[4]
2002–09: Girls Aloud and relationships
Roberts joined Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, and Kimberley Walsh to comprise the new girl group Girls Aloud, formed through Popstars by a public vote on 30 November 2002.[5] The group's debut single "Sound of the Underground" peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the 2002 Christmas number one.[6] Girls Aloud hold the record for the shortest time between formation and reaching number one.[7] The group released their debut album. Sound of the Underground in May 2003,[8] which entered the charts at number two and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry later the same year.[9] Since 2003, Girls Aloud have released twenty additional singles, with all but one charting within the top ten, and fifteen reaching the top five. Their singles "I'll Stand by You", "Walk This Way", and "The Promise" have charted at number one. Two of their albums have reached the top of the UK Album Chart; their greatest hits album The Sound of Girls Aloud and 2008's Out of Control, both of which entered the chart at number one, with over one million copies of the former being sold.[10] All their albums are certified platinum.[9] They have been nominated for five BRIT Awards, and in 2009 won Best British Single at that year's BRIT Awards for "The Promise".[11]
Girls Aloud have become one of the few UK reality television acts to achieve continued success, and had amassed a fortune of £25 million by May 2009.[12] The 2007 edition of Guinness World Records listed them as "Most Successful Reality TV Group", while they also hold the record for "Most Consecutive Top Ten Entries in the UK by a Female Group" in the 2008 edition. Working closely with Xenomania since the start of their careers, the group's innovative approach to mainstream pop music has earned them critical acclaim.[13][14][15] The group has sold ten million records worldwide.[16]
Roberts began dating businessman Carl Davies in 2007. They had announced plans to marry, but the pair broke up in May 2008.[17][18] Roberts began dating Dubai-born Charlie Fennell in 2008.
In 2009, Girls Aloud decided they would take a break to pursue solo projects.[19]
2009–10: Dainty Doll and anti-tanning stance
Roberts struggled with her pale skin tone.[20] She admitted that she used to use sunless tanning products every night, despite her bandmates' concerns.[20] Roberts admitted that she felt like the "ugly one" of the band; she would often deal with her insecurities by going home to Runcorn at every opportunity and drink excessively with her old friends.[21] In 2008, Roberts said she "turned a corner" and accepted herself.[21]
Through the ITV2 television programme The Passions of Girls Aloud, which witnesses the members of Girls Aloud achieving another passion of theirs, Nicola Roberts created a make-up range for girls with fair skin. She met with two directors from Jelly Pong Pong, a cosmetics company, who agreed to produce Roberts' make-up range. Dainty Doll, Nicola's make-up range, was released in limited quantities on 18 April 2008.[22] The foundation was praised by Helen Brown of The Times, who said that it "sinks in instantly, leaving a velvety second skin."[23] In August 2010, Roberts relaunched Dainty Doll at London's famous Harrods store with an in-store signing.[24][25] The brand now includes a new logo, as well as new products, including concealer, lipstick, eyeliner and foundation.[24][26]
In 2009, Roberts began working on an investigative documentary television programme for BBC Three, entitled Nicola Roberts: The Truth About Tanning.[27] The documentary highlighted the dangers of sun tanning and sunbed use.[27][28] Roberts met top dermatologists and cancer experts for the documentary.[27] She also visited patients diagnosed with skin cancer and families who have lost loved ones to melanoma.[27] James Walton of The Daily Telegraph felt the documentary was "a convincing and sobering piece of television."[29]
Roberts has publicly advocated legislation that would outlaw unmanned sunbeds and ban the use of sunbeds for minors.[30][31] The private member's bill was proposed by former Cardiff North MP Julie Morgan and also supported by former Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham.[32] At the bill's launch, Roberts said, "Going into the streets of Liverpool and interviewing the young girls who are obsessed with having a tan and feeling like they had to be brown to be seen as attractive, that whole mentality that they had gathered was just a bigger problem than I ever thought it was."[32] Roberts has also said, "I feel that people injecting themselves with a needle to become brown is quite disturbing."[28]

In late 2010 reports surfaced that Roberts signed a deal with Sony Records and that she is working on solo material due for a 2011 release.[33] The reports have now been confirmed and Roberts' solo career launches with the release of her debut single in the summer of 2011.
Nicola’s first single, Beat Of My Drum, will be released on June 5th 2011. Nicola worked with Dimitri Tikovoi and Diplo on the single that is her long-awaited entry to the pop world. Roberts stated, “It's a fun record...It was important my first single was different to anything else around. I love that it's a song everyone can sing and dance along to.”
Beat Of My Drum is taken from Nicola’s forthcoming album Cinderella’s Eyes which will be released in autumn 2011. Roberts spent a year working on the album with collaborators including Dimitri Tikovoi (Goldfrapp, The Horrors), Diplo (M.I.A, Beyonce), and Metronomy (Roots Manuva), as well as Canadian electropop duo Dragonette.[34] The album will be released as part of Nicola’s new solo artist deal with Universal Records. A second single will precede the release of the album in the autumn.
On 2 May 2010, Roberts officially joined Twitter and launched her official website to announce debut of her single.

As a member of Girls Aloud, Roberts has also appeared in the fly on the wall documentary Girls Aloud: Home Truths, the E4 documentary series Girls Aloud: Off the Record, the ITV2 series The Passions of Girls Aloud, and a one-off variety show entitled The Girls Aloud Party. Roberts made a cameo appearance in the 2007 film St Trinian's, in which Girls Aloud portray a band of school girls. Roberts and her band mate Kimberley Walsh appeared in an episode of Britannia High. Roberts contributed to the book Dreams that Glitter - Our Story, an autobiography with her Girls Aloud bandmates, in October 2008. The book was written with a ghostwriter and published by the Transworld imprint Bantam Press.[35][36] The book featured unseen photographs and included insights into the members' personal lives, their success together, style tips, and "everything we've learned about life, love and music."[36][37] The book was previewed and serialised by OK! prior to its release. Girls Aloud held a book signing at Waterstone's in Piccadilly, London to promote the release.[38] The title Dreams that Glitter comes from a line in the group's 2007 single "Call the Shots".
As a member of Girls Aloud, Roberts has also endorsed Barbie, KitKat, Nintendo DS, Samsung, and Sunsilk.[39][40][41] It has been reported that she will model for Vivienne Westwood.[24] In July 2010, Roberts was a guest judge on reality show Britain's Next Top Model.[42]
