Revision as of 08:01, 10 July 2011

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 01:27 on 14 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

Fungus

On the article northern hemisphere, the phrase is not capitalised. I have changed the text of the FA accordingly: I guess the blurb should also reflect the article specific to the concept. Kevin McE (talk) 23:06, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

But the article is entitled Northern Hemisphere, and references I found like this one and this one are almost unanimous for capitalization. Art LaPella (talk) 03:27, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Our MoS uses the phrase northern and southern hemispheres, admittedly not in the section on capitalisation. Kevin McE (talk) 08:01, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

South Sudan

Can we use File:Flag of South Sudan.svg as the image? Nightw 06:53, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think there's an unwritten rule (or it might be written somewhere) that we don't normally use flags on ITN (I recall doing it once a few months ago because we'd had the same image up for days). Besides, Atlantis hasn't been up for very long and it's usually a good idea to leave them for 24 hours so we don't run out of images. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:50, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh that's fine, I wasn't sure how long the shuttle image had been up for. But it's not every day you see a new country born; if the shuttle image gets a bit old, even File:Flag map of South Sudan.svg or File:South Sudan in Africa (claimed).svg would suffice. Nightw 16:53, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We usually don't use flags because that's a lazy and unhelpful way of illustrating most stories. Just because an event happened in Generistan does not mean that the flag of that country is a good choice of illustration. However, we have used flags in cases where they are directly relevant to the story - e.g. when a new flag has been adopted. I think we also used the Kosovo flag when that nation declared its independence. I think South Sudan's independence is one of those situations where a flag would be a reasonable choice of image. Maybe it should go up once the Atlantis image has been there for 24 hours? Modest Genius talk 23:05, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Kuala Lumpur rally

I don't think Kuala Lumpur is famous enough to be mentioned without a country qualifier. I think Malaysia should be added to the blurb. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 21:39, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I tend to agree. How about: "Amid the Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur, [Malaysian] police arrest more than 1,600 people."? --Mkativerata (talk) 21:44, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 21:45, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:48, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I changed "amid" to "during". We use "amid" in the news of the world item, and also "amid the rally" feels a bit awkward. SpencerT♦C 03:08, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good change. The phrasing was weird before that. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 03:12, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day

1806

There seems to be no bold linked article: probably should be Vellore Mutiny. The article on the fort suggests that the sepoys were based at the fort, in which case they did not break in. It seems rather one sided to only talk of the British dead. 100 Indians on the day and up to 800 dead in total according to the article. Kevin McE (talk) 22:55, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reporters: please first correct today's or tomorrow's regular version.

Caption Needs Cleanup Today's POTD caption is bogus. First, it notes "there was" this and "there were" that, then "The story has it that" something. What story? I hope someone with the capability will please clean this up. Marquess (talk) 15:44, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if you'd like to make improvements to the regular version (linked above), I can then copy those to the protected version. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:10, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
