"I Luh Ya Papi"
Song

"I Luh Ya Papi" is a song recorded by American entertainer Jennifer Lopez, for her upcoming eighth studio album (2014). It was written by Lopez, Andre Proctor, Karim Kharbouch and Noel "Detail" Fisher, the latter of which also handled the song's production. The song was released by Capitol Records on March 11, 2014 as the lead single from Lopez's upcoming album.

Background and release

"I feel blessed, I come from the South Bronx, from the same street that she came from. Working with her is a blessing for me, this record is big just for the fact that we both came from the South Bronx and did it."[1]

French Montana on working with Lopez

A version of "I Luh Ya Papi" featuring French Montana premiered on the radio station Power 106 on March 5, 2014.[2] In addition to the original, a remix of the song featuring Big Sean was also premiered.[3] Speaking of her decision to have French Montana feature, Lopez said, "We’re both from New York, and we both have similar backgrounds, and I wanted this record to have that vibe and he was just perfect for it so I was so happy when he heard this record and wanted to be a part of it."[1]

Composition

"I Luh Ya Papi" is a hip hop and synthpop song.[4] It was produced by Detail.[5] According to Michael Cragg of The Guardian, the song is "all a bit bonkers", with synths sliding in reverse and metallic beats "clanking in the distance".[6] Lopez raps and sings in three different accents.[7][6] Jeff Benjamin of Fuse.tv also called the production of the song a "mixing electro bloops with a hip hop beat".[2] It contains a range of innuendoes and "overt references" to Lopez's body. Such can be heard in the lyrics "Got that hourglass for you, baby look at these legs", referencing her famed hourglass figure.[8]

Critical response

While criticizing the song for being "ridiculously-titled", Michael Cragg of The Guardian wrote that the hook "may actually require surgery to get out of your head".[6] Similarly, Mike Wass of Idolator said his "eyes rolled" upon hearing the single's title, but commended it as being "actually rather great". Wass, despite calling the lyrics "questionable", compared the song to Lopez's single "I'm Into You" (2011) and wrote, "the production is jam-packed with catchy hooks and the chorus is terrifyingly catchy. It’s only a matter of time before this becomes a meme."[5] Scott T. Sterling of Radio.com called the song a "sunny and infectious tune is sure to soundtrack many beach parties once the temperatures soar. Yes, this winter will eventually end".[9]

Music video

A music video for "I Luh Ya Papi" was directed by Jessy Terrero in Miami, Florida.[10][11] On February 12, 2014, Lopez was photographed on a large luxury yacht wearing in Miami filming a music video.[12] Lopez was clothed in a "skin-tight long-sleeve cut-out top" and "white hot pants", while wearing gold sunglasses and sporting a "sleek sectioned ponytail". She was surrounded by shirtless men.[13] This was originally reported to be for the music video "We Are One (Ole Ola)", the anthem for the 2014 FIFA World Cup that features Lopez, Pitbull and Claudia Leitte.[14]
