Sidharth Malhotra (born 16 January 1985) is an Indian film actor and former model who appears in Hindi films of Bollywood. He began his acting career in Karan Johar's commercially successful dramedy Student of the Year, for which he received a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut nomination.[3] He subsequently received generally positive reviews for his performance in the romantic comedy Hasee Toh Phasee (2014) .

Career

Prior to his acting debut, Malhotra was an active model and also worked as an assistant director to Karan Johar on his 2010 film, My Name Is Khan.[citation needed] In 2012, Malhotra made his debut in Johar's Student of the Year alongside Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.[4] His performance was appreciated by film critics. Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN wrote that Malhotra "is earnest and has a pleasing presence."[5] Anupama Chopra from Hindustan Times commented, "Critically, the leading men, Varun and Sidharth, work. They don't instantly set the screen on fire like Hrithik Roshan or Ranbir Kapoor did in their first films. But they grow on you. Karan puts a heavy burden on them. They are the backbone of this film, but they pull it off. If you have patience and a taste for the overblown, check them out".[6] The film performed very well at the box office, earning over ₹70 crore (US$8.4 million) domestically.[3]

Malhotra was paired opposite Parineeti Chopra alongside Adah Sharma in the film Hasee Toh Phasee, co-produced by Dharma Productions and Phantom Films and directed by debutant Vinil Mathew.[7] Talking about his character , Malhotra said, "He is lost, not successful and sentimental. He is not a typical hero kind of character. He is under pressure and is the most stressed out character of the movie."[8] The film as well as his performance received positive reviews. Mohar Basu of Koimoi wrote, "In every bit Malhotra matches up to Parineeti’s terrific work with equal gusto. He is gregarious but restrained and there is a serene calmness in his performance which makes him a smashing hit. To compliment Parineeti’s boisterousness is quite a challenge and so far he is the co-star she is best suited with." and described his chemistry with Chopra a " lively, heartfelt chemistry with confidence." "[9] The movie although had a mixed opening at the box-office, it showed a good growth due to word-of-mouth publicity[10] and ultimately emerged a commercial success with global revenues of ₹62 crore (US$7.4 million) .[11]

Malhotra next featured alongside Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh in the Mohit Suri directed romance-thriller Ek Villain, produced by Ekta Kapoor. His performance in the film garnered critical acclaim. Critic Komal Nahta published on his blog, "Sidharth Malhotra does an excellent job of Guru. He looks handsome as ever and fills the screen with his presence, endearing himself to the audience. He acts with effortless ease and breathes fire in the action scenes. So wonderful is his performance in the difficult role that it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the newcomer (relatively speaking) springs a mighty surprise. The boy is destined to go places!"[12] The film took a bumper start at the box-office[13] [14] and earned a phenomenal ₹74 crore (US$8.9 million) in the domestic market within the first week to become his biggest commercial success.[15]

Malhotra has also confirmed to be a part of Vikramaditya Motwane's social drama Bhavesh Joshi, Karan Malhotra's Hindi remake of Warrior, titled the same, alongside Akshay Kumar and Tarun Mansukhani's Hindi remake of the French film Priceless opposite Anushka Sharma.[16][17][18] He will also feature in another film produced by Balaji Motion Pictures as he will be completing his non-exclusive two-film contract with them.[19][20]

Alongside his acting career, Malhotra has supported charitable organisations and performed for stage shows. In early 2013, he performed at Filmfare awards, Screen, Stardust, and at an international event in Hong Kong with his co stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.[21] He hosted Stardust Awards with Dhawan and Ayushmann Khurrana and a segment of Filmfare Awards.[22]

Sidharth walked the ramp for designer Manish Malhotra at the Lakme Fashion Week, alongside actors Dhawan and Khurrana. Manish's collection was a tribute to 100 years of Indian Cinema.[23] He again walked the ramp at the same event alongside Jacqueline Fernandez and Esha Gupta. He also remained active in modelling as he walked the ramp at several events including Blackberry Sharp Nights with Abhay Deol and Aditya Roy Kapoor.[24] and Manish Malhotra's Men For Mijwan fashion show alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and Akshay Kumar.

Malhotra performed at a special event alongside Dhawan, Bhatt, Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor and Huma Qureshi to raise funds for the flood-affected victims of Uttarakhand.[25] He also shot for a PETA ad creating awareness about dogs.[26]

Malhotra is considered a promising newcomer and was praised for his acting and style. He ranked No. 12 at Times' 50 Most Desirable men of 2012.[27] He was also voted as the most good looking debutant of 2012 by a UK poll.[28][29] Malhotra endorses brands like Coca Cola and Kwality Walls Cornetto. Malhotra also became the first ever man to feature twice on the cover of Men's Health India.[30] His performance in the thriller Ek Villain garnered praise from one and all.
