Girl Meets World is an American coming of age television sitcom. The series made its debut on June 27, 2014 on Disney Channel at 9:45 p.m., ET/PT before assuming its normal 8:30–9:00 p.m. ET/PT time slot on Fridays, beginning July 11, 2014.[1][2][3]

The series is a sequel to the sitcom Boy Meets World, which aired on ABC in its TGIF block from 1993 to 2000. The original series centered on Cornelius "Cory" Matthews, including his growing relationship with Topanga Lawrence and their eventual marriage. Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, who portrayed Cory and Topanga, reprise their roles in Girl Meets World, which centers on the life of the couple's daughter, Riley Matthews. Her father has become a middle school teacher (and she happens to be one of his students), while her mother is a lawyer, who gains part ownership of an old world bakery in the first season episode "Girl Meets Popular". Other members of the earlier show's cast have either recurring roles or cameo appearances.

On August 6, 2014, Girl Meets World was renewed for a second season by Disney Channel.[4][5]

Plot

The series follows Cory and Topanga Matthews' daughter Riley (Rowan Blanchard) and her best friend, Maya Hart (Sabrina Carpenter) as they navigate the challenges of life as they start seventh grade. The show also features their classmates Lucas (Peyton Meyer) and Farkle (Corey Fogelmanis), and Riley's younger brother Auggie (August Maturo). The series is set in New York City where Cory and Topanga moved to in the Boy Meets World series finale.[6]

  • Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard) – Riley is 12 years old and in 7th grade at the start of the series. She is the center of many lessons in her father's class. She is just finding her self. She and her best friend Maya Hart explore middle school together while making new friends along the way.[7] Riley is very much like her father. She also has a crush on Lucas.
  • Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) – Riley and Auggie's father and Topanga's husband, who was the lead character of Boy Meets World. He has taken a job as a history teacher at John Quincy Adams Middle School, whose class consists of his daughter and many of her friends. In addition to being Riley's father, he often acts as a father figure to Maya.[7] Cory's personality and traits are similar to those of his daughter.
  • Maya Hart (Sabrina Carpenter) – Riley's best friend. She is wild and rebellious, showing it in her actions such as protesting homework and almost lighting the class' homework on fire. She has a troubled past, but is social and street smart.[8] She is tomboyish and thinks she knows everything about the world.
  • Lucas Friar (Peyton Meyer) – Lucas is another one of Riley's friends, but also her love interest. He is originally from Austin, Texas.[7] Lucas has good manners and common sense. He considers Farkle to be his best friend. Maya stereotypes him as a cowboy, but it is revealed that he is from a family of cowboys in Girl Meets 1961.
  • Auggie Matthews (August Maturo) – Auggie is Riley's 5-year-old brother and Cory and Topanga's son. When he grows up, he wants to be like his father.[7] He believes himself to be Riley's twin, as shown in the pilot. In the episode "Girl Meets Brother," it was revealed that his full name is August.
  • Topanga Matthews (Danielle Fishel) – Riley and Auggie's mother and Cory's wife.[9] Topanga is Cory's childhood sweetheart and they have been friends since they were babies. Topanga has become a successful lawyer and is a loving and protective mother as shown in "Girl Meets Sneak Attack".
  • Farkle Minkus (Corey Fogelmanis) – Farkle is a close friend of Riley and Maya, but is also infatuated with both. In "Girl Meets Sneak Attack", it is shown that he cares for the two, and will do anything for them to be happy. He is smart, and is a big flirt, while also being eccentric.   • Katy Hart (Cheryl Texiera) – Maya's mom. For Career Day at school, one day after the event was held, Katy reveals to Maya's class that she has aspirations of becoming an actress. However, she works as a waitress at the Nighthawk Diner. Katy frequently fails to show up to any event of importance to Maya. Her relationship with Maya is reminiscent to that of Shawn and Chet Hunter from Boy Meets World.
  • Ava Morgenstern (Ava Kolker) – Auggie's six-year-old, manipulative girlfriend. She convinces Auggie to do whatever she asks because she is older. However, Ava is ultimately oblivious to how this affects Auggie. Topanga makes it clear that she does not like Ava.
  • Evelyn Rand (Jackée Harry) – Riley and Maya meet Evelyn on the subway in the pilot. They later call her "Crazy Hat," because of the obscure hats they see her wearing at the subway station. The girls eventually find out she is a wealthy, successful businesswoman who has an office building named after her as seen in "Girl Meets Crazy Hat."

Boy Meets World alumni

The following characters from Boy Meets World made reappearances in this series, either in recurring roles or cameo appearances:

  • Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) - Cory's best friend since childhood, Topanga's close childhood friend, and uncle figure to Riley and Auggie. Since the end of Boy Meets World, Shawn has traveled around as a writer and a photographer. He also forms a friendship with Maya. Cory and Shawn have a close relationship with each other that, as shown in Boy Meets World, is at times even stronger than the relationship between Cory and Topanga.
  • George Feeny (William Daniels) – Cory's omnipresent mentor who is now in his 80s. Feeny makes a cameo appearance in the pilot episode, his only appearance in the first season.[10] Mr. Feeny was Cory, Shawn, and Topanga's teacher in Junior High, their Principal in High School, and their Professor in college. Throughout these years, Feeny was the Matthews' next-door neighbor, and a close friend to the Matthews family, as well as Shawn Hunter.
  • Alan Matthews (William Russ) - Cory's father, Topanga's father-in-law, and grandfather to their children. Alan has a close relationship with his son and owns a wilderness store which he originally ran with his eldest son Eric in Boy Meets World.
  • Amy Matthews (Betsy Randle) - Cory's mother, Topanga's mother-in-law, and grandmother to their children. Amy has a close relationship with her children, especially Morgan, who is her only daughter. She often would disagree with Cory and Topanga as a couple when they made important decisions even though she is fond of them.
  • Stuart Minkus (Lee Norris) – Cory, Topanga, and Shawn's former classmate, appearing as a main cast member in the first season of Boy Meets World. Although Cory and Shawn often bullied Minkus, the boys also looked to him for advice on girls and life, and Stuart was good friends with Topanga (later becoming a fierce rival, which carries over to this series). Stuart is Farkle's father, as seen in "Girl Meets Maya's Mother." He appears at Farkle's career day at school, whereupon he instantly renews his rivalry with both Cory and Topanga, and is proud to mention his position as the CEO of Minkus International.
  • Harley Keiner (Danny McNulty) – Cory's good friend, and former high school bully. In Boy Meets World, Harley was much older than the rest of the students, due to being held back. He now works as the janitor at John Quincy Adams Middle School as seen in "Girl Meets the Forgotten". He mentions in "Girl Meets Flaws" that Cory helped him get the job. Reminiscent of the original series, Harley likes to address Cory by the nickname "Johnny Baboon" (or simply, 'Baboon'). Harley is regretful for his past behavior and looks to steer kids from going down the wrong path.
  • Joshua Matthews (Uriah Shelton) - Joshua is Cory's younger brother and Riley's uncle. He was born premature, and underweight, and almost died just hours after his birth. Joshua was the only member of the Matthews family to never have a prominent role and he was originally portrayed by creator Michael Jacobs's son Daniel Jacobs in Boy Meets World. Joshua is now 17 years old and still lives in Philadelphia with Cory's parents.[11]

Development

In November 2012, it was reported that Disney Channel was in the early stages of development of a follow-up series titled Girl Meets World, which will center on Cory and Topanga's 12-year-old daughter Riley. Boy Meets World co-creator Michael Jacobs will develop the series and serve as its executive producer and showrunner. On November 26, 2012, it was confirmed by Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel that they would be reprising their roles as Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence-Matthews in the series.[12][13] In February 2013, it was announced that Michael Jacobs has reached out to all of the former Boy Meets World cast members to take part in the new show.[14]

On June 17, 2013, Disney Channel officially greenlit a series order for Girl Meets World, which began production that summer.[1][15] On January 23, 2014, the first-season order was increased from its initial 13-episode count[4] to 21, to make a full season.[16]

On May 2, 2014, a full trailer for Girl Meets World was released.[17] On May 21, the pilot episode became available as a preview to users of the various "Watch Disney Channel" mobile and television apps, which require TV Everywhere authentication to watch. Following the TV premiere of the pilot, the episode "Girl Meets Sneak Attack" was made available via the apps.[18] On June 13, the pilot was made available for free on iTunes.

On August 6, Disney Channel announced that the series was renewed for a second season.[19] Production began on November 11, 2014,[20] with the season set to premiere sometime in 2015.

Casting

Auditions began in mid-November 2012 for the lead roles of Riley Matthews, the daughter of Cory and Topanga; Maya, a witty friend of Riley's who has a troubled past; and Elliot, Riley's older brother. By the end of January 2013, Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter were cast as Riley and Maya, respectively.[21][22] Teo Halm was tapped for the role of Elliot in early March.[23]

Filming of the pilot began on March 20, 2013 and concluded on March 22, 2013.[citation needed] Rider Strong and Will Friedle made a surprise visit to the set, sparking rumors of a return, or at least a cameo appearance, in the upcoming series.[24] Maitland Ward also made a visit to the set and was asked about the return of her character, Rachel McGuire. Ward said, "I can't really share any show info, but it would be fun if the old gang got back together again!"[25]

On October 5, 2013, Teo Halm announced on Twitter that he was no longer involved with the series. A report by TVLine suggested the series was undergoing creative changes after the pilot.[26]

On March 12, 2014. it was announced that Lee Norris would reprise his role of Stuart Minkus.[27]

On March 18, 2014, it was announced that Rider Strong would reprise his role of Shawn Hunter for two episodes of the first season.[28]

On December 3, 2014, It was announced that Will Friedle would reprise his role of Eric Matthews, beginning with the second season, along with William Daniels reprising his role as George Feeny in a larger role.[29]

On the subway, they meet a handsome boy named Lucas Friar (Peyton Meyer), whom Riley immediately develops a crush on. In history class, Cory (who happens to be their history teacher) assigns the class to write an essay on something they would fight for. Maya and Riley decide to fight for "no homework," which leads to accidentally setting off a smoke alarm. Riley winds up choosing to fight for friendship instead, and Cory and Topanga understand Riley is growing up and they need to be there for her.

When Cory's plan to get his students to communicate face to face fails, he takes away their cell phones and assigns the class to prepare a discussion about whether technology has made people better. The whole class has trouble communicating, except for Maya, who was the only one in the class without a smartphone. Riley, Maya, Lucas, and Farkle go to the library to do their research, where Riley and Lucas connect by talking about their interests and Maya discovers that she is a talented artist when given just a pencil and paper. When Riley tells Cory about her conversation with Lucas, he desperately tries to keep them apart and attempts to do so by returning their phones, once he realizes it was he who prompted these emotions into Riley. Cory gives Maya a smartphone, and says to use it to communicate to him about Riley, and also buys Maya an art kit.

After many failed attempts of flirting, Riley discovers that she should enjoy her own age and not hurry to grow up. Meanwhile, Auggie (August Maturo) starts acting grown up to impress a girl down the hall named Ava (Ava Kolker) but Cory and Topanga are not ready for him to grow up yet. Riley tells Auggie that he should enjoy his age and not hurry to grow up either.

When both girls tell him there is nothing more he can teach them, Cory feels he has lost them, though Topanga assures him that his intentions are good and he will never give up on those he cares about. Cory chaperones the school dance and for the last dance, he chooses to do a father-daughter dance with both Riley and Maya. One tradition ends but two new ones are created.

Meanwhile, Topanga antagonizes Cory after he insults her cooking. Maya admits that she took the locket from a lost and found and returns the locket to the little girl to whom it belonged.

Meanwhile, Topanga is knowingly on the wrong side of a case, and channels her inner-former self for motivation to do the right thing.

Riley realizes this lesson about the forgotten also extends to home and thanks her parents for caring for her and Auggie.

When Farkle is not present to receive his award, everyone becomes concerned because he never misses class. Suspecting that Farkle is skipping class, Riley, Maya, and Lucas learn that Farkle is being bullied by Billy Ross (who is competing with Lucas for the "Athlete Award"). To help Farkle, Riley comes up with the idea to have everyone write a label on their forehead, describing their "flaw", and Billy is the only one without a label. After the gang confronts Billy over his flaw, he allows Farkle to imprint his label and apologizes to him. The gang learns that everybody has something that makes them unique, and these qualities should be respected. On Awards Night, Lucas wins the Athlete Award, and Riley wins the Spirit Award.

On Cory and Topanga's 15th anniversary, Auggie needs a babysitter so his parents can have a date night. Meanwhile, Riley is encouraged by Maya to be treated more like an adult. When Riley comes home and says she wants a later curfew, and needs to be treated more like an adult, Auggie suggests that Riley could babysit him. When Cory and Topanga are unable to get on the subway, they decide to return home to spy on the kids. They find Maya has come over and Auggie and Riley are arguing, because Auggie wants to play with Riley who wants to want TV. Cory and Topanga sneak into the apartment and watch to see if Riley can make it up to Auggie.

Critical reception

Girl Meets World has received positive reviews from critics. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives the show an 82% approval rating based on reviews from 17 critics, with an average score of 7.3/10. The site's consensus states: "Though not quite as comical, Girl Meets World sweetly shares the nostalgia of its predecessor, Boy meets World, [sic] with its young audience while providing positive moral values for today's youth."[51] Metacritic gives the show a score of 64 based on reviews from 10 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[52]

The series premiere received positive reviews. Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast called it a "perfectly pleasant Disney Channel show".[53] Rob Owen of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said it was, "a cute half-hour that capably introduces new characters and sets the table for the new series".[54] Diane Warts of Newsday said the show, "does its job of bringing tween-based family viewing into the 2010s".[55] The series premiere garnered 5.2 million viewers.[56]

Similar to critical reception, viewer reception has also been positive for Girl Meets World. IMDb users have given the show a 7.1/10 rating from approximately 2000 user reviews,[57] and on Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 82% approval rating based on over 120. TV.com has given the show a 8.7/10 rating from nearly 100 users.[58] On Metacritic, Girl Meets World holds a 7.6/10 from over 35 users, indicating "generally favorable reviews."[59]

The series originally premiered on June 27, 2014 on Disney Channel in the United States and Family Channel in Canada.[62][63] It premiered on Disney Channels in Australia on August 25[64] and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on August 29.[65] In South Africa and the Middle East, it began airing on November 15 on Disney Channel.[66][67]
