The Jim Thorpe Award, named in memory of multi-sport legend Jim Thorpe, has been awarded to the top defensive back in college football since 1986. It is voted on by the The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, an organization based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

  • In 1996, the The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, formerly the Jim Thorpe Association had to re-vote on the eve of granting the award after Chris Canty from Kansas State University withdrew his name from consideration.
