On 3 June 2017, at 22:08 BST, a "series of co-ordinated terror attacks"[3] occurred in central London. At 23:46 BST, the Metropolitan Police told people in affected areas to "run and hide" and "barricade yourself in"[5] after a white van rammed multiple pedestrians on London Bridge. Multiple perpetrators then jumped out of the van and stabbed several people, while at the Borough Market another stabbing attack took place in multiple restaurants, with witnesses reporting that the attackers shouted "Allah" and stabbed bystanders with knives. Police at the London Bridge cordon say there are up to 7 fatalities and 20 casualties.[6]

The Metropolitan Police declared the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks to be "terrorist incidents."[7][8][9]

Multiple explosions subsequently heard near Borough Market were confirmed to be controlled explosions.[10]

Attacks

London Bridge

At around 22:08 BST,[11] a white van travelling north to south across London Bridge mounted the pavement and hit a number of pedestrians.[10][12] Police began evacuating all buildings within the vicinity of the bridge.[4] At least two fatalities were reported.[3] London Bridge station was also closed at the request of the police.[10] Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Cannon Street stations were also closed.[13] Police at the cordon confirmed that there had been fatalities.[6] The Metropolitan Police dispatched boats on to the River Thames as a result of the incident, along with assistance from the RNLI, to contribute to the evacuation of the area.[14] A witness reported the attackers screamed "This is for Allah."[15][16][17][18]

The London Ambulance Service released a report at 00:49 BST on 4 June stating that they had "sent a number of ambulance crews, advanced paramedics and specialist response teams [and] an advanced trauma team from London's air ambulance".[10][8]

Borough Market

Borough Market

Four people were stabbed by three attackers in the Borough Bistro pub,[6] which is located in the Borough Market at the southern end of London Bridge. The attack occurred shortly after the incident on the bridge.[19]

At 23:43 BST, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers had responded to reports of stabbings and that "shots had been fired" in the market.[20]

At 01:45 BST on 4 June, there were reports of four explosions at Borough Market, one louder than the rest.[21] They were confirmed to be controlled explosions.

Aftermath

The Metropolitan Police asked the public to remain calm and vigilant.[22] Previously a stabbing incident in Vauxhall was reported to have been related, and Bank and Vauxhall stations stations were briefly closed, but were then reopened.[23] It was later confirmed to be unrelated to the other two incidents.[24]

An emergency COBRA meeting will be held on the morning of 4 June.[6]

Reactions

United Kingdom

Prime Minister Theresa May returned to Downing Street from campaigning for the general election.[25] May later said: "Following updates from police and security officials, I can confirm that the terrible incident in London is being treated as a potential act of terrorism."[6][10]

Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan all wrote on Twitter that their thoughts were with those affected and expressed thanks to the emergency services.[26][27][28]

Other countries

In response to the incident, US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that the United States would offer its help to the UK.[29][30][31] Other international leaders to react included Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull,[32] Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,[33], French President Emanuel Macron,[34] and Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny.[35]
