Saatva is a privately held e-commerce company that specializes in luxury mattresses and bedding products. Founded in 2010, Saatva has grown to become the internet’s premier luxury mattress brand, with 2019 revenues in excess of $200 million. The company designs and delivers six luxury mattress styles through a network of 18 factories and 156 white glove delivery partners in the United States and Canada. Saatva is headquartered in New York, with offices in Austin, Texas, and a Viewing Room in midtown Manhattan.
Saatva is a privately held e-commerce company that specializes in luxury mattresses and is based in New York, New York. In 2015 Saatva ranked 101 on Inc's list of the top 500 retailers for the year, with 2014 revenues of $28.6M. Since 2014, Saatva has grown exponentially. Saatva mattresses launched Loom and Leaf, an eco-friendly brand of luxury memory foam mattresses and their high end 'Zenhaven' mattress in 2016. Saatva's diverse mattress approach and focus on using environmentally safe materials has gained the support of a diverse clientele. Thus, Saatva expects their revenue to exceed 500 million in 2020.

History
History
Saatva was founded by furniture industry veteran Ron Rudzin and digital entrepreneurs Ricky Joshi and Kris Brower, who saw an opportunity to create a different kind of mattress company. “Over the prior thirty or forty years, the mattress industry had developed a terrible reputation,” said Rudzin, Saatva’s CEO. With misleading marketing, overbearing salespeople, and inflated prices, buying a mattress had become a miserable experience.
The company was founded in 2011 by furniture industry veteran Ron Rudzin and entrepreneur Ricky Joshi, who chose to base the company's name off of the Sanskrit word "sattva" which means "pure". Rather than open a brick and mortar store, the two opted to sell their mattresses exclusively online. Their products received positive reception from outlets such as Vogue and Forbes magazine and in 2015, placed on both Forbes and Internet Retailer's guides for the top companies of that year.

By adopting an innovative online business model, Rudzin and his cofounders determined that they could sell a luxury mattress, direct to consumer, for a fraction of what the same quality mattress cost at retail. They included white-glove delivery,  24/7 customer service, and a generous home trial. “We wanted to offer the best service and the best products, and treat customers in a way that they hadn’t seen in the mattress industry in my lifetime,” Rudzin said.
That same year the company also conducted a survey on the sleep preferences of people in North America.

The company name, Saatva, is derived from the Sanskrit word sattva, which stands for purity, wholesomeness, and virtue. In May 2016 Saatva launched the Natural Latex brand Zenhaven. Consumers have the option of placing their orders entirely online or calling one of Saatva's customer representatives. After placing an order, customers are contacted by a customer service representative in order to confirm the order and explain the delivery process, which includes installation and an optional mattress removal.
Growth
Saatva has experienced rapid growth, having been named to the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing companies in the United States for four years in a row (2015-2018). The company posted revenue of $202 million in 2017 and a three-year growth rate of 729%, earning it the #691 spot out of 5,000 companies in 2018. In addition to its overall ranking, Saatva reported the seventh highest revenue for a retail business and the 144th highest revenue overall. Saatva held the #266 spot in 2017, #316 in 2016, and #101 in 2015.

In 2018, Saatva was also named a “Fast 50” company by Crain’s New York Business. The list ranks the New York-based businesses with the highest three-year growth rates.

In 2019, Saatva also expanded into bedroom furniture with six styles of upholstered designer bed frames, all of which are handcrafted with sustainably sourced hardwood. == Logistics & distribution network ==
Saatva has a network of 16 domestic factories, two Canadian factories, and more than 155 distribution partners. This extensive network puts Saatva within 60 miles of 85% or of the homes in the continental United States for efficient white-glove delivery. Because Saatva’s mattresses travel on average less than 100 miles from one of its manufacturing facilities to a customer’s bedroom, they are always delivered “factory fresh,” never from inventory.  Cutting the distance between factory and home also reduces carbon emissions.

Saatva’s six luxury mattresses all come with free white-glove delivery and setup, which includes removal of the customer’s old mattress. Each mattress also comes with a 120-night home trial. == Retail presence ==
Saatva opened its first physical location in December 2019. The Saatva Viewing Room is located at 969 Third Avenue (58th Street) in Manhattan. The 3,300-square-foot space was designed by interior designer Vicente Wolf, who describes it as “a sensory experience that represents what Saatva stands for.”

In its review of the space, Sleep Retailer, an independent trade publication, noted that it offers a “stark contrast” to the typical mattress shopping environment. “There is much to learn from the Saatva in-store experience as the brand takes its own unique approach to selling beds and fulfilling customer needs,” according to the review. Sleep Retailer highlighted the store’s soft lighting, sleep vignettes, calming surroundings, neutral color palette, and digital technology.

Saatva partnered with Samsung to outfit the Viewing Room with state-of-the-art retail technology, including floor-to-ceiling LED monitors with customizable messaging at the entrance, tablets and wall screens throughout the space featuring product and company information, and behavior sensing technology that senses what a customer is looking at and delivers specific information about that product.

Saatva is a privately held e-commerce company that specializes in luxury mattresses and bedding products. Founded in 2010, Saatva has grown to become the internet’s premier luxury mattress brand, with 2019 revenues in excess of $200 million.[5][6] The company designs and delivers six luxury mattress styles through a network of 18 factories and 156 white glove delivery partners in the United States and Canada. Saatva is headquartered in New York, with offices in Austin, Texas, and a Viewing Room in midtown Manhattan.

The company name, Saatva, is derived from the Sanskrit word sattva, which stands for purity, wholesomeness, and virtue.[7] It was chosen to reflect the values espoused by the new company: respect for customers and workers, transparency in pricing and policies, and commitment to environmental responsibility.

Growth

Saatva has experienced rapid growth, having been named to the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing companies in the United States for four years in a row (2015-2018).[8] The company posted revenue of $202 million in 2017 and a three-year growth rate of 729%, earning it the #691 spot out of 5,000 companies in 2018. In addition to its overall ranking, Saatva reported the seventh highest revenue for a retail business and the 144th highest revenue overall. Saatva held the #266 spot in 2017, #316 in 2016, and #101 in 2015[9].

In 2018, Saatva was also named a “Fast 50” company by Crain’s New York Business.[10] The list ranks the New York-based businesses with the highest three-year growth rates.

Products

Saatva currently offers six luxury, eco-friendly mattress styles, sold online at saatva.com as well as at the company’s New York City Viewing Room. Each mattress comes with free white-glove delivery and a 120-night home trial.

The company initially launched with the Saatva Classic, a coil-on-coil hybrid innerspring mattress.[11] The Saatva Classic features a dual-coil system, with a support base made from tempered, recycled steel to provide stability and resist sagging and a second layer of individually wrapped coils that add contouring ability and reduce motion transfer.[12]

In 2015, the company expanded its product offering to include Loom & Leaf, an ultra-premium memory foam mattress.[13][14] Loom & Leaf features a layer of 5-lb. viscoelastic memory foam that contours to relieve pressure and a layer of 4-lb. convoluted (wavy) memory foam infused with cooling gel.[15]

In 2016, Saatva launched Zenhaven, a 100% all-natural Talalay latex mattress.[16] Zenhaven has a support core made of sustainably harvested Talalay latex, topped with a 5-zone latex comfort layer that provides firmer support in the lumbar region and maximum pressure-point relief.[17]

In 2018, Saatva expanded into bedding with 100% organic cotton sheets, a Talalay latex pillow, an organic mattress pad, and foam and latex mattress toppers.[18]

In 2019, the company launched Solaire, a precision adjustable air mattress.[19] Solaire has individual air chambers that can be inflated or deflated to achieve a precise level of comfort.

That same year the company also launched Saatva HD, a hybrid innerspring mattress designed for people weighing between 300 and 500 pounds.[20] Saatva HD features a single support layer of highly durable coils (25% stronger than the industry average), threaded with a helical wire to add contouring ability and eliminate motion transfer.[21]

In 2019, Saatva also expanded into bedroom furniture with six styles of upholstered designer bed frames, all of which are handcrafted with sustainably sourced hardwood. The collection takes its inspiration from coastal cities and towns around the globe, with styles including the Santorini and the Amalfi.[22]

In 2020, the company launched Saatva Youth, a dual-sided innerspring mattress designed for the needs of growing children.[23] The unique flippable design provides customized support for younger children as well as older children.[24]

Logistics & distribution network

Saatva has a network of 16 domestic factories, two Canadian factories, and more than 155 distribution partners. This extensive network puts Saatva within 60 miles of 85% or of the homes in the continental United States for efficient white-glove delivery.[25] Because Saatva’s mattresses travel on average less than 100 miles from one of its manufacturing facilities to a customer’s bedroom, they are always delivered “factory fresh,” never from inventory.  Cutting the distance between factory and home also reduces carbon emissions.[26]

Saatva’s six luxury mattresses all come with free white-glove delivery and setup, which includes removal of the customer’s old mattress.[27] Each mattress also comes with a 120-night home trial. If the customer is not completely satisfied, they have the option to return or exchange the mattress for a $99 transportation fee.[28]

Retail presence

Saatva opened its first physical location in December 2019. The Saatva Viewing Room is located at 969 Third Avenue (58th Street) in Manhattan. The 3,300-square-foot space was designed by interior designer Vicente Wolf, who describes it as “a sensory experience that represents what Saatva stands for.”[29]

Sleep Retailer highlighted the store’s soft lighting, sleep vignettes, calming surroundings, neutral color palette, and digital technology.[30]

Saatva partnered with Samsung to outfit the Viewing Room with state-of-the-art retail technology, including floor-to-ceiling LED monitors with customizable messaging at the entrance, tablets and wall screens throughout the space featuring product and company information, and behavior sensing technology that senses what a customer is looking at and delivers specific information about that product.[31]

Awards & recognition

Saatva has received numerous accolades for its products and business practices. In 2018 the company won the Business Intelligence Group’s Sustainability Product of the Year, which honors “those who have made sustainability an integral part of their business product.”[32] Saatva won the award for its flagship innerspring mattress, the Saatva Classic. Judges cited Saatva’s eco-responsible manufacturing and distribution, which includes sustainable harvesting of materials, C02 reduction, and the use of safer bio-based foams and natural flame retardants.[33]

Saatva’s mattresses have been reviewed by a variety of editorial publications. The Saatva Classic was named one of the best mattresses for runners by Runner’s World[34] and one of the best mattresses for athletes by Men’s Journal.[35] New York Magazine named the Saatva Classic innerspring mattress one of the “best all-around mattresses” available online.[36] Architectural Digest also named the Saatva Classic “one of the best mattresses you can buy online.”[37]

In the July 2018 issue of O, the Oprah Magazine, the editors called the Saatva Classic a “dreamy find” that will “layer your sleep woes to rest,” praising the mattress’s 100% organic cotton cover, choice of three firmness levels, coil-on-coil design, and 120-day in-home trial period.[38]

In 2019, Men’s Health named Saatva’s Loom & Leaf memory foam mattress the best mattress for stomach sleepers as part of their 2019 Sleep Awards.[39]

In January 2020, Wirecutter, a New York Times Company, called the Saatva Classic its favorite spring mattress. “If you want the convenience of ordering a mattress online but prefer an innerspring, we think the Saatva Classic is one of the best options,” according to the review. “It comes with a generous 120-day trial period, and it’s available in three firmness levels that should suit all sleep positions.” Wirecutter also called Loom & Leaf the “highest-quality” memory foam mattress they tested.[40]
