The My Hero Academia manga and anime series features a vast world with an extensive cast of characters created by Kōhei Horikoshi. The series takes place in a fictional world where, currently, more than 80% of the Earth's population possesses some form of superhuman ability, commonly referred to as a "Quirk" the advent of these abilities has given rise to not only professional heroes, but also the threat of villains.

U.A. High School

The main setting of the series, U.A. High School (雄英高校, Yūei Kōkō), is held in high regards as one of the top hero schools in Japan.

After attempting to save Bakugō from a villain, Izuku, an initially Quirkless boy, is chosen by All Might to become the ninth holder of One For All (ワン・フォー・オール, Wan Fō Ōru), a Quirk that stockpiles the user's physical strength and unleashes it as a powerful burst; the quirk can also be passed from one person to another. Eventually, Izuku finds out that One for All contains the quirks of the previous users but he becomes the first user capable of manifesting them.[3]

Elements of Sorahiko's character are based on Yoda with Kohei Horikoshi stating that the character emits a "Dagobah" feeling, a reference to the planet that Yoda is found on in the original Star Wars trilogy.[22]

Paranormal Liberation Front

The main antagonists of the series. Previously known as League of Villains (敵連合, Viran Rengō), Tomura transitions the League into the Paranormal Liberation Front after defeating the Meta Liberation Army and adding its surviving members into their ranks.

Born Tenko Shimura (志村転弧, Shimura Tenko), he is the grandson of All Might's mentor Nana Shimura. He became All for One's apprentice after he accidentally murdered his family when his touch-based Quirk Decay (崩壊, Hōkai), which allows him to destroy whatever he grabs with his hand, manifested. The trauma played in Tomura becoming disillusioned with society with a resolve to destroy, initially wearing the preserved hands of his family all over his body.[25]

A scientist acting under the pseudonym Daruma Ujiko (氏子 達磨, Ujiko Daruma) who creates the Nomus and served as All for One's personal doctor after he was critically injured, possessing a longevity Quirk that makes him appear years younger than he really is. Following All for One's Arrest, Garaki surgically modifies Tomura after testing his worth as their leader's successor. The character's real name was previously Maruta Shiga (志賀 丸太, Shiga Maruta), but was changed following the backlash in relation to the war crimes committed by Unit 731.[28]

The Meta Liberation Army (異能解放軍, Inō Kaihō-gun, M.L.A.) is a large, powerful organization of Villains originally founded and led by Chikara Yotsubashi (四ツ橋主税, Yotsubashi Chikara), a man who gained notoriety as the Villain Destro (デストロ, Desutoro). They refer to Quirks as Meta Abilities (メタ能力, Meta Nōryoku).

The Shie Hassaikai (死穢八斎會, lit. "Eight Precepts of Death") is a group of gangsters who are the last known Yakuza to be operating in Japan since the establishment of the Hero System.
