Help requested

I don't have a lot of time currently, so I was wondering if you could sort out James Barry for me. I came across it, and some of the articles seem to have titles not consistent with the MOS, and the Irish MP articles all have issues (similar issues, considering they were created by the same user. Enigma message 17:08, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the words of a great man, "Can't someone else do it?" ;> –xeno (talk) 17:15, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a look at it and it seems info is very poor. I'll keep doing research and hopefully resolve it in the next day or two. That way Xeno can concentrate on what he does best :) Lympathy Talk 17:36, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
heh, cheers. i'll probably take a look at this when I get more time, but during the day I'm usually all about the in-and-out quick jobs. –xeno (talk) 17:37, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As odd as it sounds, from all the research I've done, the edits are 100% correct and all dates reflect the references given and agree with what I could find. They all appear to be different people. Lympathy Talk 17:57, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Even so, the articles need work to even be stub-quality, and they should be moved, IMO. My problem is I'm not certain what they should be renamed to. Enigma message 18:00, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people) is far too complicated for me to fully comprehend whilst I'm working =) –xeno (talk) 18:01, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The problem here is that I believe Barry (1659) and Barry (1689) to be related but I can't find any evidence of this, also Barry (1739 may also be related). Lympathy Talk 18:11, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
*loudly clears throat* :P Enigma message 16:18, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, in looking at the MOS, I see that it says "Years of birth and death should not be used in a page title to distinguish between people of the same name", but then how are we supposed to distinguish between the many Irish MPs with the same name? (Perhaps the districts they represented) It's something you might raise at the MOS talk page. Other than that, I'm not sure what more I can do to help. =) –xeno (talk) 16:25, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I'll do that. Enigma message 17:00, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HI and about my reverts

Hi this is Matthew Azevedo and I was wondering if you could answear my questions...

1. Why do you think the problem is resolved??? It is not.... 2. I dont know why you agree with Eric that he reverted my edits???... I mean that's why I put Futurestar= Future celebrity and Matt is my name on my youtube account and that also means Future article about me in Wikipedia. 3. I know that wikipedia is not a not a chat room... so why does eric think that I am doing what he thiks that I am doing???

That's my questions... my facts about me

1. I dont hate wikipedia, I just dislike the editors 2. I will be the next Intenet Celebrity hence (FuturestarMatt) 3. Also my edits are not neutral point of view.... it's fact

Last but not least #5. It's true that I got my final warning on my wiki. account and I will not edit any more due to that warning.

I will be on a wikipedia page due to my rising fame

Sincerly, Matthew Ryan Azevedo

ps. I know I might sound stupid but it's true

—Preceding unsigned comment added by FuturestarMatt (talkcontribs) 20:41, July 22, 2008 (UTC)

  1. The AN thread is resolved because I left you a message.
  2. I agree your edits should have been reverted because you can't use Wikipedia to promote yourself. If you do become so notable that an article about you was worth of inclusion, then someone else should write it, not you.
  3. I don't know why eric thinks you are using Wikipedia as a chat room, perhaps you can ask him.
  4. I don't think you had a number 4.
  5. You are free to edit Wikipedia constructively, as long as you don't use it to promote yourself or edit with a conflict of interests.
Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. P.S. If you do want to add to the WP:AN thread, please feel free to do so. –xeno (talk) 20:45, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So does that mean.....

So does that mean A person other than me could write the same exact edit and not will be reverted??? Also thanks for the previous answear. sincerly, Matthew Azevedo AKA. FuturestarMatt —Preceding unsigned comment added by FuturestarMatt (talkcontribs) 23:22, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They would probably be reverted as well - since you do not yet meet the criteria for inclusion based on WP:Notability (people) or even the general criteria for inclusion. Also, please do remember to sign your posts using four tildes as follows: ~~~~. Thanks, –xeno (talk) 23:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yet, another question

I think we know that my edits was reverted. So were clear by now with that... I am just wondering if I would ever be in a wiki. article without that articel being reverted. So here is the question would I ever be in Wikipedia??? --FuturestarMatt (talk) 00:07, 23 July 2008 (UTC)FuturestarMatt[reply]

Please read this: Wikipedia:BIO#Basic criteria. Once you meet those basic criteria, you would probably qualify for inclusion in Wikipedia. –xeno (talk) 00:10, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I've read it.....

Ok I've read it and fully understand it... But could you give me some examples if you would to make me the next internet celebrity so I could be in wiki. I know I am asking alot but could you??? also just to let you know that I am not a attention-freak. --FuturestarMatt (talk) 00:18, 23 July 2008 (UTC)FuturestarMatt[reply]

If there was a newspaper article written about you, preferably more than one - that would start to establish your notability. By the way, please edit the existing section to pose further questions, rather than making a new section each time. –xeno (talk) 00:20, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is my first time editing someones page so dont this messy edit. My question is does pass newspappers count??? because I am in one. North county times --FuturestarMatt (talk) 00:27, 23 July 2008 (UTC)FuturestarMatt[reply]

Jumping in here: the notability guidelines for inclusion say you have to have non-trivial, third-party coverage. Policy also says that Wikipedia is not simply a collection of fleeting news articles. I have been mentioned in three local newspapers, but this does not make me notable for an article Fritzpoll (talk) 00:30, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I dont have the link to my news aritical in the past but I do have the actual newspapper which wont count... The only links that I have for me is my blog and youtube channel. Do you have any Ideas other than newspapper articles? --FuturestarMatt (talk) 00:56, 23 July 2008 (UTC)FuturestarMatt[reply]

Yes - do something amazing in the world, and then worry about whether or not you have a Wikipedia article (playfully intended) Fritzpoll (talk) 00:58, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My suggestion would be to stop worrying about being included in Wikipedia and focus on increasing your Youtube viewership. If you become notable enough to be included in Wikipedia, someone else will put you in. –xeno (talk) 00:59, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks you guys/girls for supporting me to become the next internet/youtube celebrity--FuturestarMatt (talk) 01:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)FuturestarMatt[reply]

Right, best of luck. (section moved up with your other one) –xeno (talk) 01:05, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In passing...

Is it just me or is WP:RADWP descending into mild chaos? Ownership issues, spats over various things....seems a shame. Any chance you could, uh, take a lead, as I quite enjoyed listening to it Fritzpoll (talk) 21:52, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Things seemed to have stabled off, the main issue right now is no one creating episodes. Not sure what any of the "anchors" are up to, I've always just been a bit of a segment man. I suppose I could try and create a full episode or two, since I'm living the bachelor's life for the next week or so, but once my wife and kid get back it's back to daddy-duty whilst at home and not much time for the wiks. –xeno (talk) 21:55, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's odd that anything on-wiki has membership rules like that, and a formal hierarchy. I was just wondering if the thing was dying off or not. Don't stress about filling in :) Fritzpoll (talk) 21:57, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, I tried to reduce some of the WP:BURO concerns. –xeno (talk) 22:01, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On that issue, I remember my eyes being opened as a newbie when exploring the WP:ESPERANZA saga from oh so long ago. Fritzpoll (talk) 22:03, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok or not ok?

Can I welcome new users? Or not? Reply at my tlk page please. ~~Sealim~~ (talk) 21:56, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My reply here.

Welcoming

Hm? Why couldn't someone welcome a new user until after their first edit? I've never heard that before; actually, I think welcoming people might even make them less likely to use that account for vandalism. Well alright, that's just a little hope of mine, but still. GlassCobra 22:14, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm, it's fairly common practice. Probably because so many accounts are created and never edit, we'd be creating so many unnecessary talk pages. I think it mentions that somewhere at the welcoming committee pages. –xeno (talk) 22:15, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've never heard of any practice like that. I've certainly welcomed my fair share of users with no edits. I'll take a look around and see if I can find what you're talking about, though. GlassCobra 22:17, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, I looked at the WC and didn't see any mention of it. I didn't make it up though, let me know if you find out where I saw that =) –xeno (talk) 22:18, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think another reason not to "welcome" a non-contributing editor is that the standard {{welcome}} template starts out with "Hi! thank you for your contributions!. If they don't have even one yet, it's a rather silly template to add...Keeper ǀ 76 22:19, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, I suppose you have a point. Wikipedia:Welcoming committee/Finding newbies says that an acceptable practice is going to the account creation log and welcoming people, which would probably include many accounts with no edits. I'm certainly not intending to harp you here, Xeno, I'm mostly just trying to clarify for all of our sakes. GlassCobra 22:20, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all. Though I do remember reading it. It may have just been in talk page discussion, though. –xeno (talk) 22:22, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help

Got a content blanking-fest going on at Aaron Tuten, but I've hit my limit. I'm pretty certain the IP is the other editor, but a hunch isn't enough to block under 3RR - can you take a look and revert if you feel its necessary? Fritzpoll (talk) 22:21, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This kind of revert would fall under the 3RR exceptions: Wikipedia:3RR#Unwanted edits. Repeated removal of content without an edit summary is vandalism, plain and simple. –xeno (talk) 22:23, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
True - Why do I keep having issues getting 3RR? That's twice in a week. (sigh) Fritzpoll (talk) 22:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I helped out a bit. :) GlassCobra 22:30, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.... Again!

Thanks for keeping an eye on my user page :-). StaticGull  Talk  11:07, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

....And yet again :-)

Thanks for reverting this rather odd edit too. StaticGull  Talk  11:16, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem on both counts =) –xeno (talk) 14:13, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

your the best

thanks Xeno. may I ask you what exactly you are doing for wikipedia? i mean do you just randomly roam the wiki pages looking for things to correct, or do you have a spacial purpose in mind? do they compensate you or is the knowledge and making a difference enough to satisfy you?

you should try to find that movie too...

) Hotmarcie (talk) 12:25, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What exactly do I do here?! Good question! ;> I used to spend a lot of time working on video game articles, but these days like you said, I just kinda "roam" and help out wherever I'm needed. Admins do a lot of stuff like preventing vandalism by blocking problem users, deleting nonsense pages, creating accounts for people that have trouble, resolving disputes, etc. Nope - no compensation other than, like you said, the satisfaction of helping to further the advancement of knowledge. It's enough for me. =) I'll try to find that movie... –xeno (talk) 13:15, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I posted help me on my talk page

(Re [2]) thanks for responding, I was confused about a note on my talk section about promotion of the library, but I think what I need is to read the help pages before proceeding with more contributions or editing. Repeat CSD Question

Can you (hello, stalkers) point me at policies regarding CSD - specifically, once it's declined it can't be requested again? I thought that was the case but can't find that policy. Also, what if it is declined but then a new criterion is chosen for a subsequent CSD request? I felt like that was against policy but I can't find anything to back that up either. Thanks!  Frank  |  talk  15:38, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just off the cuff, I think a new criterion can be selected, but not the same one. –xeno (talk) 15:39, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What about not renominating once it's been declined? I don't recall where I've seen that, either.  Frank  |  talk  16:02, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The same one shouldn't be put on once it's declined, can't seem to find where that's mentioned. Seems to be a common occurrence here =) –xeno (talk) 16:06, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eh?

I reverted your revert on Adoni Maropis.[5] As it was a rollback, there was very little to go on; was this a stray rollback, or is there something else there that I don't know about? EVula // talk // // 22:54, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, MFB II made all kinds of bad edits, MFC has been pretty much unresponsive to the issue, so I reverted all it's edits per a discussion at WP:BON. Reason being, it would take a human much longer to sort the good from the bad than for the bot to re-do the good. –xeno (talk) 22:56, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just remembered you're the one with every interwiki known to man ( ;> ) . If you feel like going through and sorting the good from the bad, be my guest. Not sure if MFC is coming back anytime soon. –xeno (talk) 23:02, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, yeah, I have just a little bit of interwiki experience. ;)
I figured out what was up right after posting this; yeah, some of those interwikis were bad. I might go through your contribs and rollback anything that turns out to be a false-positive, but I really need to give some of my attention tonight to a Wikia project I'm a 'crat on. Too many projects, too little time. :) EVula // talk // // 23:07, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep - feel free. again, there were definitely some good edits, but like i said, if MFC wasn't going to sort through 'em all, I certainly wasn't. Mass revert seemed the most sensible thing, and it was a little time sensitive since the rollback button goes away when someone else makes an edit. And yea, feel free just to use native rollback on any of the ones that turn out to be OK. –xeno (talk) 23:10, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done Went through all your edits, reverted about 215 of them. What fun. :) EVula // talk // // 00:49, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, you know I had considered asking you to go through them before I reverted them, but I just know how much *I* hate when someone drops by my talk page and says "hey there's a really difficult job that needs doing...can you do it?" ;> Good work, all the same. =) –xeno (talk) 00:50, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wasn't actually that bad, truth be told... tabbed browsing makes stuff like this much, much easier (though so does being pseudo-multilingual). As it is, I was pleasantly surprised to see the edits suddenly stop while I was still in the As. I was expecting it to go on for a lot longer. :)
Besides, I think this will help kill those nasty rumors floating around about how sane I am. Gotta nip those in the bud... EVula // talk // // 00:56, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well at least no one can say now that you're a crat that you're just resting on your laurels and CHU'ing and promoting and F the encyclopedia ;> –xeno (talk) 00:57, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just did one of my usual site-wide interwiki check-ups and realized what you were talking about with the "I didn't want my SUL cluttered up" thing was (first time I've done an interwiki search on Wikipedia since unifying my account; I'm now at 461). Was surprised to see so many new accounts in my SUL report...
Uh, anyway, the reason I came back was to say you're more than welcome to drop me a note with interwiki requests like this. Anything else and I might put it off, but I really do enjoy zipping around all the other languages. :) EVula // talk // // 18:54, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I dare not click that link =) Right, I'll put you in the rolodex under "nuts and other crazy people" ;> –xeno (talk) 18:56, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, This revert wasn't correct. MFB did link to the correct bn wiki page, but your revert linked back to the redirect page rather than the actual page. So, I've reverted your revert. Thanks. --Ragib (talk) 23:05, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. –xeno (talk) 23:05, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I sort of feel like I misused rollback when you blocked him for 3RR, did I? I reported him for vandalism, with the controversial edits he was making, and the vandalizing of my talk page, along with the uncivil edit summaries I thought he could be considered a vandal. I'm still a pretty new editor, so I apologize if I misused rollback. If so, I'll try and be more careful in the future. Have a good day, Landon1980 (talk) 23:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

eh, don't sweat it. the material was contentious and in violation of the BLP policy. –xeno (talk) 23:14, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks :) Landon1980 (talk) 23:16, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Guess the rules have changed re. the blocked user template. I don't mind not adding it. Saves me some work.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 01:09, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keepscases

Hello Xenocidic. Don't you think the questions of Keepscases are funny? RfA is very stressful. His questions can help to reduce stress. Mr. Kurt is allowed to do whatever he likes. Nobody is doing enough to stop Kurt Weber. Questions of Keepscases are far better than Kurt’s nonsense. Masterpiece2000 (talk) 05:03, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I already softened my stance to him as can be seen at his talk page per the #RfA "warning" thread above. I'm fine with his questions as long as they're not overly ridiculous, or make inappropriate assumptions such as the candidate is an hallucinogenic drug user. Yes, they might relieve stress, but on the other hand, they might add more, as WJBscribe astutely pointed out. –xeno (talk) 11:38, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I think you have a point. After my unsuccessful RfA, I learned something: here you must be very careful about what you say. If you make an inappropriate joke, you will get into trouble. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 15:47, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like someone else got to him. Thanks for the report. –xeno (talk) 12:52, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it was a little bit after I placed this message up.--WillC 19:18, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Erm....

Am I doing a good job at marking nonsense/bio/advertisement and so on pages any good? Sealim Man 22:47, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Humor

So, an IP comes along and vandalizes Bombyx mori (Silkworm), and another user adds {{fact}} to the edit in lieu of reverting it. Moral of the story: Read what you tag. —Animum (talk) 23:01, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's gotta go in the funnies =) –xeno (talk) 23:28, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's funny, although I don't fault the second user. If it were me, I wouldn't have touched it at all. It is possible, although unlikely, that a kind of larvae could taste somewhat like chicken. Due to the overuse of that phrase, however, it was highly likely that it was vandalism. I suppose he chose to err on the side of caution. Enigma message 00:48, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The IP could think that it tastes like chicken, and I might not agree; in fact, I might think that it tastes like pasta. I, personally, might even think that the anonymous user is making a violation of Wikipedia:No original research. Also, you nailed my thoughts on the head. :-P —Animum (talk) 00:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just getting you up to date buddy

Yep. Hi, its me GENIUS. Gwen decided to put me back in, so im very glad. Btw, right now i am currently contesting the block of a user who is being blocked because Gwen Gale believes that the user is one of my sockies. Please contact a local checkuser and put a stop to that nonsense, i hate seeing other users get blocked on my behalf. Ill have the name for you in a minute. Cheers! IPs

(Re [8]) I seem to recall a large amount of controversy regarding IPs and whether or not they can vandalize or blank their own talk pages with the concensous being that it's a bad idea, but I haven't been here in a while so things may have changed pretty dramatically. I'm from way back when, y'know... I still think that it should be reverted, but I suppose that if it's different nowadays I can let the little anons be. --(Flying Ninja Monkey) (Banana!) 04:45, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption

Hi Xeno, sorry to bother you, but do you ever adopt anyone? If you do, have the time, and are willing could you adopt me? Have a good day. Landon1980 (talk) 15:43, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, but my adoption technique is fairly informal, basically my door is always open for questions but at the present time I don't have any exercises or anything like that =) –xeno (talk) 15:45, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that sounds good. Basically I just want to gain experience in various areas. Right now, pretty much all I've done is patrol the recent changes, and report a few vandals to AIV. Do you have some tips on other things I could do, or any other areas I could help out? Landon1980 (talk) 15:49, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I could tweak/post some of my old admin coaching exercises to a subpage, if you want. Or, Xeno could do the same thing, whatever. Let me know if I can help. Tan ǀ 39 15:52, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there's always New page patrol, and fixing links to disambiguation pages is a never ending battle. What about joining a Wikiproject related to a subject your interested in and working on some articles and such? –xeno (talk) 15:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
@tan, yeah, i've been meaning on importing some of hersfold's adoption lessons and such, but... alas =) –xeno (talk) 15:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen several new articles while patrolling the recent changes which I thought should be deleted for various reasons, but I didn't know how to tag them properly. TAN, I'll take any help/advice I can get, any exercise you think would benefit me I'd be more than happy to try it. I've been wanting to try my hand at writing an article, but every time I think of something when I search for it someone has beat me to it. Thanks to both of you for your time. I know how busy administrators are, and I truly do appreciate it. Landon1980 (talk) 16:04, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well you don't always need to be the creator of the article, plenty need improving =) As far as the CSD tagging, if you use Twinkle, it definitely provides easier tagging capabilities, but if not, review WP:CSD and there are some templates along the right hand side of the page. –xeno (talk) 16:37, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:SLJCOAAATR 1 causing problems still

Since you blocked him earlier this week, I thought I would let you know... he hasn't changed his attitude at all. He continues to attack AMIB here:Talk:List_of_characters_from_Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(games)#Dispute_resolution, as well as bad faith assuming/incivility here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games#List_of_characters_from_Sonic_the_Hedgehog_.28games.29. If you have time, could you look into it? RobJ1981 (talk) 16:39, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just my two cents - there's some borderline stuff but nothing I see that warrants a(nother) block. Of course, I defer to any opinion of someone more familiar with the situation. Tan ǀ 39 16:50, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) The main reason I blocked him was for 3RR and gross incivility. I took a look and those threads and didn't really see anything too over the top - looks like a fairly heated discussion regarding a content dispute that I know almost nothing about so I wouldn't really be the best person to make a judgment call on it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, though. –xeno (talk) 16:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, whenever you update that page just sign the very first section of this talk page (notification section) the same way my adoptees do. –xeno (talk) 16:59, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your protection of {{Gibsonian}}

Greetings, Xenocidic. I'm not entirely certain, but it seems like you protected {{Gibsonian}} from editing by unconfirmed users. Is this meant to expire once the William Gibson article is off the main page? If not it's quite concerning. Regards, Skomorokh 19:07, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There's an increasing trend to indefinitely semi-protect widely used templates, but if you think that IPs and brand new users can provide valuable improvements to that template, then I'll lift the protection after it's off the main page. –xeno (talk) 19:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd appreciate it. That's a very worrisome trend for an encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. Skomorokh 20:49, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hrm, somehow I doubt that many anons and brand new users make worthwhile contributions to fairly stable templates like that. –xeno (talk) 20:55, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkling enthusiasim

O.K I just got Twinkle set up and boy it's cool! Thank you so much for your help and I promise not to abuse the tools and I will probably not use them for a-while because I'm still learning is that a good idea? DH Michaels (talk) 19:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote: If it's straight and obvious vandalism, you can use the vandalism button, if it's good faith but unhelpful, use the rollback "agf" button, with an edit summary, and for anything in between just use "rollback" with an edit summary. One more question I found a user that created a page and it does not adhere to neutral point of view even though it was in April, 2008 he has not edited the page since should I leave a note on his talk page or not? DH Michaels (talk) 20:24, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re Dear Family

Civility Award

I'm not sure who you are, anonymous user, but I must say, bloody well said at Talk:John Dundee. I'm awarding you this civility barnstar (the first barnstar I've ever handed out to an IP) because you explained the issue quite perfectly with the utmost attention to the family's feelings. Not sure if she'll be back to read it, but good show nonetheless. –xeno (talk) 22:45, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, after years of toiling away as an anon, that is the first such recog I've received, AFAIK -- so, thank you indeed! I am constantly aware of how painful it can be to work here, a reason for sticking with anon mode... (Just having a small innocuous edit knee-jerk reverted without explanation can be hard to take.) It is just such an obvious classic disaster, for a family member to get involved with a personal WP article, with that one article being their only experience with WP. I did not fully research the history of what happened, but it seemed like the people interacting with her did not realize just what kind of a process mess they were participating in. It seems like there should be some standard thing like what I wrote, to present to "outsiders" who get caught in the WP process meat grinder unawares? As Paul Newman was told, what we are dealing with here is a "failure to communicate"... -69.87.199.246 (talk) 02:16, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
