Allegra Versace Beck (Italian pronunciation: ['ale:ɡra verˈsaːtʃe be:k]; born 30 June 1986), commonly known as Allegra Versace, is an Italian heiress and socialite. Versace is a member of the board of directors of Gianni Versace S.p.A. and has worked in New York City as a theatrical dresser.[1][2]
In 2011 she jointed the Versace company's Board of Directors.[3]
Early life and education
Born Allegra Versace Beck, she is the daughter of Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace and American ex-fashion model Paul Beck.[4] Allegra was raised outside Milan, Italy, with her younger brother Daniel. She was described as a "serious, sensible and bright" child, "with her hair in pigtails and her nose in a history book".[5] Sir Elton John, whom she adored and called "uncle," made a gift to her of his first piano.[6]
The favored niece of designer Gianni Versace, she was eleven years old when he was fatally shot outside of his Miami mansion in July 1997.[5] Her mother immediately sought counseling for her.[1] He left her 50% of his fashion empire in his will, she instantly became worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and now has an estimated net worth of US$800 million.[7][8] On her 18th birthday, she received 50% ownership of Gianni Versace S.p.A..[9] Allegra's uncle Santo Versace already owned 30% of the company, and her mother already owed 20%, but due to a long-standing squabble between the two, the remaining 50% of the Versace empire was left to Allegra.[1]
Education
Versace attended The British School of Milan in Milan[10] and Brown University in Rhode Island.[4] In 2006, she enrolled at UCLA, where she studied French, art history, and theatre.[11]
Personal life
Versace spends significant amounts of time at her mother's home in Milan, her cousin Antonio's apartment in SoHo, New York City, and a residence in Los Angeles. In March 2007, her mother Donatella released a statement that her daughter was in treatment for anorexia.[12][13][14][15] Referring to her bout with anorexia, Allegra told la Repubblica: "I call this my period of absence. I was lost in other thoughts and couldn't confront reality, with my eyes shielded from everything. Above all, I wanted one thing – to be no one, to not be recognised, not be hunted down."[16] Allegra was born and raised Roman Catholic.[17]
