WWE is an American professional wrestling promotion based out of Stamford, Connecticut. Title reigns are either determined by professional wrestling matches or are awarded to a wrestler, as a result of the culmination of various scripted storylines.

WWE divides its roster between five brands, where wrestlers exclusively compete, albeit with some exceptions. The three primary brands that WWE promotes are Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.[1][2] Specialty brands include 205 Live, which is for male wrestlers 205 lbs. and under (designated by WWE as cruiserweights), and NXT UK, which is for wrestlers based in the United Kingdom—both of these specialty brands are considered as being part of NXT.[3]

Raw, SmackDown, NXT, and NXT UK each have a primary and secondary championship for male wrestlers, a singles championship for female wrestlers, and a tag team championship for male wrestlers. There are two tag team championships for female wrestlers—one shared by Raw and SmackDown, and the other on NXT. There is one championship for the cruiserweight wrestlers that is shared between NXT, NXT UK, and 205 Live. There is also one tertiary championship, which is accessible to anyone, regardless of gender or WWE employment status.

There are currently 20 championships in WWE. Among the five current brands, 25 wrestlers hold the championships (including one interim champion, and a tag team championship vacancy) as of September 16, 2024. The list includes the number of times the wrestler has held the title, the date and location of the win, and a description of the winning bout.

Overview

Men's singles

At the top of WWE's championship hierarchy for male wrestlers are the WWE Championship on Raw, the Universal Championship on SmackDown, and the NXT Championship on NXT. The WWE Championship is held by first-time champion Bobby Lashley, who defeated The Miz in a Lumberjack match on the March 1, 2021 episode of Raw.[4] The Universal Championship is held by Roman Reigns, who is in his second reign. He won the title by defeating previous champion "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman, who Reigns pinned, in a No Holds Barred Triple Threat match at Payback on August 30, 2020.[5] The NXT Championship is held by Finn Bálor, who is in his record-tying second reign. He won the vacant title by defeating Adam Cole at NXT Super Tuesday II on September 8, 2020; previous champion Karrion Kross relinquished the title due to injury.[6]

Secondary titles for male wrestlers include the United States Championship on Raw, the Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown, and the North American Championship on NXT. The United States Championship is held by Riddle, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating former champion Bobby Lashley and John Morrison, who Riddle pinned, in a triple threat match at Elimination Chamber on February 21, 2021.[7] The Intercontinental Championship is held by two-time champion Big E, who defeated Sami Zayn in a Lumberjack match during the December 22, 2020 tapings of SmackDown (aired December 25).[8] The North American Championship is held by record three-time champion Johnny Gargano, who defeated previous champion Leon Ruff and Damian Priest in a triple threat match at TakeOver: WarGames on December 6, 2020.[9]

Men's tag team

Tag team championships for male wrestlers include the Raw Tag Team Championship, the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, and the NXT Tag Team Championship. The Raw Tag Team Championship is held by The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods), who are in their record-tying fourth reign as a team (individually, this is the fourth reign for Woods and the record-tying sixth for Kingston). They defeated The Hurt Business (Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin) on the March 15, 2021 episode of Raw.[10] The SmackDown Tag Team Championship is held by Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, who are in their first reign. They defeated The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) on the January 8, 2021 episode of SmackDown.[11] The NXT Tag Team Championship is currently vacant. Previous champions Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch vacated the titles due to Burch separating his shoulder on the March 17, 2021 episode of NXT.[12]

Specialty

The WWE 24/7 Championship is a tertiary championship shared across all five brands and is open to anyone regardless of gender (including non-WWE personnel). It can be defended anytime, anywhere, as long as a WWE referee is present. The title is held by record 51-time champion R-Truth. He won the title by pinning Old Spice representative Joseph Average (portrayed by NXT and WWE Performance Center trainee Rik Bugez), which took place backstage during an Old Spice advertisement at Fastlane on March 21, 2021.[13]

The NXT Cruiserweight Championship is the only championship of the 205 Live brand and is also defended on NXT and NXT UK. It is for wrestlers 205 lb (93 kg) and under (referred to as cruiserweights); the only championship in WWE with a weight limit. At present, there are two titleholders recognized as champion. The first is Jordan Devlin from NXT UK, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating former champion Angel Garza, Travis Banks, and Isaiah "Swerve" Scott, who Devlin pinned, in a fatal four-way match at Worlds Collide on January 25, 2020. Due to a travel ban as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Devlin was unable to defend the title in the U.S., thus a separate title holder was crowned to serve as interim champion in the U.S. Santos Escobar from NXT is the U.S.-based interim champion in his first reign. He won the title (under the persona of El Hijo del Fantasma) by defeating Drake Maverick in the interim championship tournament final during the May 27, 2020 taping of NXT (aired June 3). Devlin defended the title on NXT UK while Escobar defended it on NXT.[14] After the travel ban was lifted in March 2021, Devlin made his return to the U.S. on the March 17, 2021 episode of NXT and confronted Escobar over who the real champion was, and a challenge was made for TakeOver: Stand & Deliver to determine the undisputed champion.[15]

Women

At the top of WWE's championship hierarchy for female wrestlers are the Raw Women's Championship, the SmackDown Women's Championship, and the NXT Women's Championship. The Raw Women's Championship is held by Asuka, who is in her second reign. She defeated Sasha Banks by submission at SummerSlam on August 23, 2020.[16] The SmackDown Women's Championship is held by Sasha Banks, who is in her first reign. She won the title by defeating Bayley in a Hell in a Cell match at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on October 25, 2020.[17] The NXT Women's Championship is held by Io Shirai, who is in her first reign. She won the title by defeating previous champion Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley, who Shirai pinned, in a triple threat match at TakeOver: In Your House on June 7, 2020.[18]

There are two tag team championships for female wrestlers — the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship, which is shared by Raw and SmackDown, and the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship on NXT. The WWE Women's Tag Team Championship is held by Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler from Raw, who are in their record-tying second reign, both as a team and individually. They won the title by defeating Asuka and Charlotte Flair during the Royal Rumble Kickoff pre-show on January 31, 2021.[19] The NXT Women's Tag Team Championship is held by first-time champions Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart, who defeated Dakota Kai and Raquel González (themselves having just been named the inaugural champions) on the March 10, 2021 episode of NXT.[20]

UK

The top title of NXT UK is the NXT United Kingdom Championship. It is held by Walter, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Pete Dunne at TakeOver: New York on April 5, 2019, ending Dunne's reign at 685 days.[21] The secondary championship of NXT UK is the NXT UK Heritage Cup, which has a special stipulation in which all matches are contested under "British Rounds Rules". It is held by A-Kid, who defeated Trent Seven in the tournament final to determine the inaugural champion on the November 26, 2020 episode of NXT UK (the actual date the match took place is unknown).[22] The NXT UK Women's Championship is held by first-time title holder Kay Lee Ray, who won the title by defeating Toni Storm at TakeOver: Cardiff on August 31, 2019.[23] The NXT UK Tag Team Championship is held by Pretty Deadly (Lewis Howley and Sam Stoker), who are in their first reign. They defeated Gallus (Mark Coffey and Wolfgang) on the February 25, 2021 episode of NXT UK (the actual date the match took place is unknown).[24]
