These characters appear in the animated series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir and its films.

Main characters

Marinette Dupain-Cheng / Ladybug

Marinette Dupain-Cheng a.k.a. Ladybug (voiced by Cristina Vee in the English dub[1][2] and by Anouck Hautbois in the French version) is a 15-year-old blue haired, blue-eyed, budding fashion designer at Collège Françoise-Dupont and her family operates a renowned bakery. Marinette is beautiful, sweet, joyful, clumsy, and sometimes a bit awkward, but respected by her peers and is extremely intelligent despite her occasional clumsy ways.

She is deeply in love with Adrien, to whom she can barely speak to out of nervousness; her best friend Alya often tries to help Marinette to declare her love to him, only for it to end in failure. Chosen by Master Fu as the keeper of the Ladybug Miraculous, she can transform into the valiant and vivacious superheroine "Ladybug" (French: Coccinelle) with the help of her Kwami, Tikki, to defend Paris from Hawk Moth's villains with her crime-fighting partner Cat Noir. As Ladybug, aware of the nature of the situations that she faces, she's more serious and she brushes off Cat Noir's advances on her, unaware that Chat Noir's alter-ego is Adrien Agreste, but she does later come to truly value her friendship with Cat Noir, him being someone she can fully trust. Her crime-fighting tool is a yo-yo with nearly endless string. With it, she can use her power of creation, "Lucky Charm" that can create an object to defeat the villains. Marinette uses her wit and resourcefulness to defeat the villain. The yo-yo also captures and purifies the Akuma butterflies, after which she has the created object turn into energy to summon her power, "Miraculous Ladybug", that undoes the damage the villains caused and restores everything to normal thus saving the day.

In the episode "Reflekdoll', Marinette temporarily obtains Cat Noir's Miraculous and transforms into "Lady Noire", the Marinette version of Cat Noir.

In the season three finale "Miracle Queen", Marinette becomes the new Guardian after Fu relinquishes ownership of the Chinese Miracle Box to her.

In season four, Ladybug starts to gain a new outfit, exposes her secret identity to her best friend Alya, and makes use of special charms to keep anyone from being Akumatized again.

Tikki

Tikki (voiced by Mela Lee in the English dub[1] and Marie Nonnenmacher in the French version[3]) is the Kwami of creation who enables Marinette to transform into Ladybug. Tikki is a small floating humanoid with a large head, big eyes, and a red body with large black spots on her head, resembling a ladybug. Tikki is a positive and serious Kwami, who believes strongly in Marinette and she gives her advice to be the best that she can be, regardless of transformation.[4] She is more than 13 billion years old, and had watched over every Ladybug since the beginning.[a] During Marinette's transformation, Tikki inhabits the Ladybug Miraculous, a pair of earrings worn by Marinette. Astruc has written on Twitter that Tikki means "happiness".[5]

Adrien Agreste / Cat Noir

Adrien Agreste a.k.a. Chat Noir/Cat noir (Depends on language) (French for = "Black Cat") (voiced by Bryce Papenbrook in the English dub[1][2] and Benjamin Bollen in the French version) is Marinette's classmate whom she has a huge crush on, though he is oblivious to her crush and only sees Marinette as a friend. Adrien comes from a wealthy family, and is a popular fashion model for the clothing company of his father Gabriel though he laments the poor relationship he has with him; his mother, meanwhile, has inexplicably disappeared.[b] Adrien is kind, loyal, sensitive and well-liked, and hangs out often with his best friend Nino.

Chosen by Master Fu to be the keeper of the Black Cat Miraculous, he can transform into the superhero "Cat Noir" (French: Chat Noir, "black cat") with the help of his Kwami, Plagg, to fight with Ladybug in saving Paris from Hawk Moth's villains. He has been deeply in love with Ladybug since they first met, despite not knowing her true identity and, while at the same time uses his secret identity to be more rebellious and free, unsuccessfully tries to impress her as Chat Noir. His weapon is a multi-functional staff and he has the special power of destruction, "Cataclysm", which allows him to destroy an object that he touches with a swipe of his hand.[4][c][d]

In the episode "Reflekdoll", Adrien temporarily uses Ladybug's Miraculous and becomes "Mister Bug", the Adrien version of Ladybug. In the episode "Cat Blanc", it is revealed from the future that he is akumatized by Hawk Moth and becomes Chat Blanc, an evil version of him that uncontrollably releases an infinite power of his Cataclysm, devastating the whole city and splitting the moon, leaving him all alone in his world. In "Desperada", he uses the Snake Miraculous to become "Aspik", as Ladybug chooses him, unaware of him being a Miraculous holder himself, however returns the Miraculous to Ladybug, due to his constant failures in stopping Desperada. In the season 3 finale, he starts a relationship with Kagami, but is unsure of his feelings as he is still in love with Ladybug.

In the season 4 episode "Lies", Kagami breaks up with Adrien as she is tired of Adrien's constant lies.

Plagg

Plagg (voiced by Max Mittelman in the English dub[1] and Thierry Kazazian in the French version) is the Kwami of destruction who enables Adrien to transform into Chat Noir. Plagg looks much like Tikki, but with a black body, green eyes, and pointed ears, resembling a black cat. Unlike Tikki, however, Plagg is sarcastic and lazy, in a parallel to Cat Noir's relationship with Ladybug. His favorite food is camembert, a stinky cheese.[4] During his Adrien's transformation as Cat Noir, he inhabits the Black Cat Miraculous, a ring worn by Adrien on his right hand.

Gabriel Agreste / Hawk Moth / Shadow Moth / Scarlet Moth

Hawk Moth (French: Le Papillon, lit. "the butterfly", voiced by Keith Silverstein in the English dub[1][6] and Antoine Tomé in the French version[7]) is the series' main antagonist. His true identity is the famous fashion designer Gabriel Agreste, Adrien's austere, strict and overprotective father. Having acquired both the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses prior to the series, he uses the power of the former's kwami, Nooroo, to create supervillains with his akuma, butterflies corrupted by its power "akumatizing" them. He selects those consumed by negative emotions, using them to lure out Ladybug and Cat Noir and steal their Miraculous. Gabriel's prime motivation for stealing the superheroes' Miraculous is to use their power to restore his comatose wife, Emilie. As Hawk Moth, his transformation call is "Nooroo, Dark Wings Rise!". Hawk Moth's primary weapon is a sword stick that can conceal akumas in the stone atop the cane.

During the second season, he assumes the form of the Collector to conceal his identity as Hawk Moth. He akumatized himself as "The Collector", a supervillain with the ability to trap anything that touches the pages of his blank sketchbook. He also akumatized Natalie and made her Cataclyst and inhancing his powers and became Scarlet Moth.

In the fourth season, Gabriel unifies the Butterfly and the newly-repaired Peacock Miraculous to become "Shadow Moth". This allows him to use the power of Akumatization and Amokization (creating a Sentimonster) to help in on his quest to gain the Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculouses.

Major recurring characters

Alya Césaire / Rena Rouge / Rena Furtive

Alya Cesaire a.k.a. Rena Rouge ("Red Fox") (voiced by Carrie Keranen in the English dub[8] and Fanny Bloc in the French version) is Marinette's best friend. She constantly helps Marinette with her problems, most of which pertain to Marinette attempting, and failing, to speak to Adrien; she is often seen encouraging and helping her to talk to him. She aspires to be a journalist and is in charge of the school blog. She is a big fan of superheroes and like her peers, is a massive fan of Ladybug; she even operates a fansite known as the Ladyblog, but like everyone else, is unaware of Marinette's superhero identity for the serie's first three seasons.[9]

In the episode "Lady Wifi" after she was suspended from school, she is influenced by Hawk Moth and becomes the smartphone-wielding supervillain Lady Wifi, who can fire different icons such as pause and lock, and can travel through wifi-serviced phones. In the season 2 episode "Sapotis," she temporarily receives the Fox Miraculous from Ladybug and meets its kwami of illusion Trixx, and transforms into the fox-themed superhero Rena Rouge; she returns as Rena in the episodes "Syren", "Catalyst" and "Mayura". In the season 3 episode "Oblivio," she and Nino are akumatized to become a joint supervillain as Oblivio, a supervillain who can erase the victim's memories and has a purple silhouette body. Later, she returns as Rena in the episodes "Miraculer" and "Miracle Queen (The Battle of the Miraculous – Part 2)." In the episode "Félix", Alya, Juleka and Rose were affected by a disguised Félix's hostilities, allowing Hawk Moth to akumatize them back into Lady Wi-Fi, Reflekta and Princess Fragrance as "The Punishers Trio".

She gets akumatized into Lady Wi-Fi again in season 4 episode "Gang of Secrets", but Ladybug helped Alya break free of Moth's control for the first time in her life. Alya is the only person to have ever broken out of Hawkmoth's control while akumatized. Then she becomes Rena Rouge to help her. By the end of the episode, Marinette confesses to her that she is Ladybug.

As of "Optigami", Marinette gives her the Fox Miraculous to keep. However, Gabriel has yet to give up, deducing that Alya and Ladybug are more than just allies. In the next episode "Sentibubbler", Marinette has a nightmare of Alya betraying her and giving up the Miracle Box to Shadow Moth, leaving her with second thoughts about letting her keep the Fox Miraculous. Meanwhile, with knowledge of Alya's identity as Rena Rouge, Shadow Moth creates a sentimonster copy of The Bubbler called Sentibubbler, who holds Alya's family hostage, including Nino and Marinette. Through a phone call, Shadow Moth orders Alya to betray Ladybug by giving up her Miraculous to him in order to free her family and friends, as he knows every move Ladybug will make if she comes to help Alya. However, Alya as Rena Rouge has the upper hand, by tricking Shadow Moth into believing through one of her illusions that Ladybug will no longer give the Fox Miraculous to Alya, but will give her a "more powerful" Miraculous, to keep suspicion off Shadow Moth, which succeeds. Next in "Rocketear", her outfit colour scheme changes to match her new covert job for Ladybug. She changes her superhero name to Rena Furtive. Her main role is to use illusions to help Ladybug, catch Shadow Moth, and never be seen by her enemies. However, it leaves Nino with doubt, as he is aware of Alya's identity as Rena Rouge, he questions why Ladybug hasn't asked Rena for help on their missions. Leaving him with suspicion, after watching a movie and recent Ladyblog, that Rena and Cat Noir are more than just allies, which he comes to believe after witnessing a conversation between the two, without actually hearing it. The next day, he confesses to Adrien about the couple's secret identities as Carapace and Rena. Succumbed with a broken heart and anger towards Cat Noir he turns into the villian "Rocketear". As he almost hit Cat Noir w final blow, Ladybug and Rena, through illusion and projector, show Nino of the truth. Then Rena detransforms back to Alya and convinces him to break free from Shadow Moth, which works and apologizes to Cat Noir for the misunderstanding. By the end of the episode, Alya confesses to Nino that although she tricked Shadow Moth into believing that she is no longer Rena Rouge and continues to be in secret w Ladybug, to keep them out of danger from Shadow Moth, leaving the pair with a mutual understanding.

Rena's weapon is a flute that doubles as a staff. Rena's special power, Mirage, allows her to create illusions. Rena's transformation call is "Trixx, Let's Pounce!" (French: Trixx, transforme-moi!, "Trixx, transform me!").[10]

Nino Lahiffe / Carapace

Nino Lahiffe[11][12] a.k.a. Carapace (voiced by Ben Diskin in seasons 1–3 of the English dub,[13] Zeno Robinson in Miraculous World: New York: United HeroeZ-present of the English dub,[14] and Alexandre Nguyen in the French version[15]) is Adrien's best friend who dresses in skate punk fashion, typically seen with headphones around his neck and a cap on his head. He DJs at the school's radio station.[9] Nino is fond of Marinette, but ultimately discovers that he has more in common with Alya, and they become a couple.[e]

In the episode "The Bubbler", he is influenced by Hawk Moth and becomes the supervillain called the Bubbler who can create and manipulate bubbles. In the season 2 episode "Anansi," he temporarily receives the Turtle Miraculous from Ladybug and meets its kwami of protection Wayzz, and transforms into the turtle-themed superhero Carapace. His weapon is a shield and his special power, Shell-ter, allows him to create a force field. His transformation call is "Wayzz, Shell On!" (French: Wayzz, transforme-moi!, "Wayzz, transform me!"). Carapace returns in episodes "Catalyst" and "Mayura". When Carapace is akumatized, he turns into Shell Shock.

In the Season 3 episode "Oblivio," he and Alya were akumatized again into one supervillain, as Oblivio, a purple silhouette villain who can erase the victim's memories. Later, he returns as Carapace in the episodes "Miraculer" and "Party Crasher."

When asked about Alya and Nino's ethnicity, Astruc wrote on Twitter that one of them was from Réunion, and later wrote that Alya was from Martinique.[16]

Chloé Bourgeois / Queen Bee

Chloé Bourgeois a.k.a. Queen Bee (voiced by Selah Victor in the English dub[17] and Marie Chevalot in the French version[18]) is the mayor's incredibly rude and spoiled daughter.[9] She often comes up with insults for people, especially her classmates, primarily resulting in their sadness and despair becoming a target for Hawk Moth's transforming them into akumatized villains. She has a friendly-flirty relationship with Adrien, whom she is childhood friends with, and often tries to charm him, resulting in a constant rivalry with Marinette for his affections, until in "Queen Banana", she loses interest in Adrien after refusing to change her attitude towards everyone. She has no knowledge of Ladybug's secret identity, and is a big fan of Ladybug,[9] often trying to take pictures with her; she even has a Ladybug costume that she uses in private to imitate her which results in Alya believing she is the real Ladybug until she gets akumatized into Lady Wifi. She is also know for saying "Ridiculous! Utterly ridiculous!", which is the same sentence her mother Audrey sometimes says.[19]

In the episode "Antibug," she herself is influenced by Hawk Moth and becomes the supervillain Antibug who has the same abilities as Ladybug, things like Lucky Charm, but darker and wants revenge on Ladybug for pushing her aside. In the episode "Ladybug & Cat Noir – Origins, Part 1", it is revealed that she has been classmates with Marinette for 4 consecutive years.[f]

In the season 2 episode "Style Queen", she finds the Bee Miraculous after her mother, Audrey, is restored from being Style Queen and meets its kwami of subjection Pollen, and in the next episode "Queen Wasp," becomes the bee-themed superheroine, Queen Bee. Her weapon is a spinning top and her special power, Venom, allows her to paralyze others. Her transformation call is "Pollen, Buzz On!" She also became influenced by Hawk Moth again and becomes the supervillain, Queen Wasp, with unlimited power to sting people into paralyzed statues.

As of the season 3 episode "Miraculer", she is no longer Queen Bee and gradually starts to lose faith in Ladybug. In the Season 3 finale, Chloé/Queen Bee has turned against Ladybug, after not being given the Bee Miraculous and joined Hawk Moth and Mayura on their team of supervillains. Hawk Moth then akumatizes her into "Miracle Queen" a supervillain, who sends out an army of wasps to brainwash all of Paris, which she uses to summon and reveal all the Miraculous holders. But in the aftermath, in which Ladybug saves the day again, Chloé is no longer a fan of Ladybug because Hawk Moth and Mayura were able to manipulate Chloé into joining their side.

In season 4, she is revealed to have a half-sister named Zoé Lee, who moved from New York City to Paris. Later in season 4, Chloé is akumatized by Shadow Moth into Queen Banana, a supervillain who can turn people into bananas with her gun and provided a giant gorilla-like sentimonster named Banana Boom Boom. In "Ladybug," she along with her daughter almost got akumatized by both Scarlet Moth and Catalyst where Sabine would become Verity Queen, but Catalyst succumbs to exhaustion caused by the Peacock Miraculous, distracting Scarlet Moth and cancelling the procedure.

Master Fu

Master Wang Fu (Chinese: 王富 Wáng Fù), (voiced by Paul St. Peter in the English dub and Gilbert Lévy in the French version) is a former healer and the Great Guardian of the Miraculouses. He gave Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste their Miraculouses to stop Hawk Moth and his villains' evil-doings. Master Fu is a short, Chinese man with dark brown eyes. His hair is gray and he has a mustache and goatee. He wears a red Hawaiian shirt with a white hibiscus flower pattern. Wang Fu is 186 years old, making him the oldest known human character in the series. When he was young, Fu was among the monks specifically trained to safe keep the Miraculouses at the Chinese Guardian's temple, until Fu misused the Peacock Miraculous and unintentionally created a sentimonster that resulted in the temple being destroyed; the Peacock and Butterfly Miraculouses and the Grimoire spellbook being lost, all three now being in Hawk Moth's possession. In "Miracle Queen", Master Fu loses all of his memories after giving ownership of the Chinese Miracle Box to Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Master Fu reunites with Marianne, and together they depart Paris.

She then later uses the Peacock Miraculous to transform into Mayura, a peacock-themed supervillain with the power to use corrupted amok feathers to create Sentimonster allies for the villains Gabriel creates as Hawk Moth. While warning of the detrimental side-effects of using the damaged Miraculous, Nathalie expresses her intention to see Gabriel's ambitions realized.[24] In the season 3 finale, after their retreat from Ladybug and Cat Noir, Nathalie gives Gabriel a copy of the Grimoire with all the resolved clues from the book. Her transformation call is "Duusu, Spread My Feathers!"

In season 4, Nathalie is revealed to be in bed-rest after the events of "Miracle Queen", due to her constant use of the formerly broken Peacock Miraculous. In season 3, she is briefly turned into the shape-shifting supervillain Chameleon, who can turn into anyone she wants by kissing them, putting them to sleep. Lila becomes a recurring antagonist and formally meets Gabriel at the end of the episode "Oni-Chan". In the episode "Ladybug," Hawk Moth senses the shock and despair of everyone who trusted Marinette after Lila accuses her of stealing her synthetic fox pendant and shoving her down the stairs, causing Mr. Damocles to expel Marinette. Alya sets out to prove Marinette's innocence as Marinette is forced to work with her father in the bakery. Afterwards, Adrien threatens Lila into proving Marinette's innocence by confessing to Mr. Damocles. After being tricked into believing that Lila had a disease that causes her to lie about what happened, Mr. Damocles allowed Marinette to go back to school. But Lila still holds out on having vengeance on Marinette in the future for her having a crush on Adrien.

After she de-akumatized, she is still sore at Adrien for not being honest with her and breaks up with him, telling him that she will let him know when she is ready to see him again.

In the Season 4 episode, "Mr. Pigeon 72", Marinette tries to convince Kagami to make up with Adrien, since Marinette feels that Kagami is perfect for Adrien. After Marinette's efforts to get Kagami and Adrien back together fails, Kagami tells Marinette that she no longer harbors feelings for Adrien and that he is perfect for her, and comments that she and Adrien are made for each other.

Kwamis

Kwamis are fairy-like divine beings, personifications of abstract concepts with animal-like features that were initially unable to interact with tangible beings until a Chinese mage created the Miraculous, allowing them to interact with the physical plane. Kwamis use the Miraculouses to transform their holders into animal-themed super beings with a fraction of their full power. While having a desire to do good, some kwamis like Nooroo and Duusu end up being used by villainous holders and are forced to aid them. Such precautions were set so that even if a kwami can sense each other's presence, they cannot reveal the identity of other Miraculous holders nor read from the Miraculous spellbook.

When Wu Shifu was killed, Fei Wu became a thief to pay money to Cash so that she can get the information on who killed Wu Shifu. When Fei Wu claimed the Prodigous, she can transform into Ladydragon who has the ability to turn into different animals like a dragon (when she possesses the value of justice), a bear (when she possesses the value of calmness), a mantis (when she possesses the value of patience), a snake (when she possesses the value of courage), a monkey (when she possesses the value of compassion), an eagle (when she possesses the value of confidence), a horse (when she possesses the value of honor), and a tiger (when she possesess the value of discipline). Through these values, Fei Wu was able to help Ladybug and Cat Noir calm Mei Shi and bring Cash to justice.

Renlings

The Renlings are sprite-like beings that appear in Miraculous Shanghai and are associated with the Prodigious where they grant its wielder the ability to turn into the animals they resemble as long as they possess the required values. They consist of the dragon-like Long Long (voiced by Christopher Corey Smith in the English dub), the bear-like Xiong Xiong (voiced by Sabrina Weisz in the English dub), the mantis-like Tang Tang (voiced by Mela Lee in the English dub), the snake-like She She (voiced by Carrie Keranen in the English dub), the eagle-like Ying Ying, the monkey-like Hou Hou (voiced by Brook Chalmers in the English dub), the horse-like Ma Ma, and the tiger-like Hu Hu. The Renlings are considered to be the "cousins" of the Kwamis.

Mei Shi

Mei Shi (voiced by Mark Chen) is the lion-like protector of the Prodigious who appears in Miraculous Shanghai. He was first seen as a navy-colored humanoid lion statue that was to judge whoever was worthy of the Prodigious. He judged Fei Wu when she wanted to have the Prodigious to avenge her father's death. When Mei Shi found Fei unworthy of the Prodigious, Hawk Moth akumatized Mei Shi into the gigantic YanLuoShi who went on a rampage. Hawk Moth couldn't control him upon noting that Adrian would be put in danger and was disintegrated. After Ladybug and Ladydragon de-akumatize Mei Shi and undo the damages and disintegration he caused, Mei Shi deemed Fei worthy. Upon Mei Shi claiming the Sacred Key, Mei Shi appeared again in a Kwami-like state where he acts as her Renren advisor.

Cash

Cash (voiced by Caleb Yen in the English dub) is a crime boss that briefly appears in Miraculous New York and officially debuts in Miraculous Shanghai. He was responsible for the death of Wu Shifu and Fei Wu had to work for him to pay him ransom money in exchange for telling her about what happened to her adoptive father. Ladybug exposed Cash as the culprit behind Wu Shifu's death and knocked him down in a fight. Hawk Moth then akumatizes Cash into the golden terracotta warrior-themed supervillain King Cash who can use his fan to turn anything to gold. King Cash accompanied Hawk Moth to the Sacred Cave to claim the Prodigious and fought Ladybug, Cat Noir, and Fei Wu. He was defeated in combat. After Mei Shi was de-akumatized, Fei Wu as Ladydragon handed Cash over to the police.
