The Great Northern Mall is a regional shopping mall located in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, New York.

The mall serves Syracuse's northern suburbs and Onondaga County. In recent years,[when?] many retailers have closed their stores at the mall. The mall has four vacant anchors last occupied by Sears, The Bon-Ton (formerly Dey Brothers then Chappell's), Macy's (formerly Sibley's then Kaufmann's), and Dick's Sporting Goods (formerly Hess's) in 2018, 2006, 2017, and 2021 respectively. As of 2022, over half of the mall sits vacant.

In 2015, Sears Holdings spun off 235 of its properties, including the Sears at Great Northern Mall, into Seritage Growth Properties.[2]

On January 4, 2017, Macy's announced that its store would be closing as part of a plan to close 68 stores nationwide. The store closed in April.[3]

On June 28, 2018, Sears announced that its Great Northern store would be closing as part of a plan to close 78 stores nationwide. The store closed in late September.[4]

Regal Cinemas closed on October 9, 2020.[5]

On December 10, 2020, Dick's Sporting Goods announced that it would be relocating to a former Value City Furniture space, which was in a portion of the former Chase-Pitkin, at a Wegmans-anchored shopping center less than a mile away from the mall on July 10, 2021, leaving the mall with no anchors left.[6]

On January 17, 2022, a cold spell hit the area causing water pipes in the mall and its sprinkler system to freeze and fail. Management promised repairs would be finished within a couple days; however, the mall remained closed for nearly a month. The mall finally reopened on February 16.

On August 17, 2022, the mall announced a pending sale to Hart Lyman Company, which planned to transform the mall into a lifestyle center.[7]

On October 27, 2022, a letter was sent to the remaining tenants informing them the mall will close permanently on November 20, 2022.[8] However, on October 30, 2022, Guy Hart, who is acquiring the mall, asked the current owners to not enforce the deadline date giving the remaining tenants at least until the sale of the mall in December to vacate.[9]
