Doug Funnie

• Douglas Yancey Funnie: The protagonist and main character in Doug: The Series (1991-1994) and Disney's Doug (1996-1999). An outgoing daydreamer with a good heart and a love for writing (left handed), music (specifically his favorite band, The Beets), and of course, his crush Patti Mayonnaise. Often is writing his thoughts in his journal, which he lost in one episode. Has some alter-egos. They are: a superhero named Quailman (sort of a mixed spoof of Superman and Batman), explorer Race Canyon (spoof of Indiana Jones), Durango Doug, and Agent 000 Smash Adams (spoof of Agent 007 James Bond). Doug was voiced by Billy West (1991-1994: The Series), and Tom McHugh (1996-1999: Disney's Doug).

• Mosquito "Skeeter" Valentine: Doug's best friend, he is rather off-beat and is famous in both versions of the series for his "honk honk" sound. Skeeter is from a blue-skinned family who lives in Bluffington. His dad has a foul temper but slow vocabulary , his mother is kind-hearted and rather meek, and he has a mischievous two-year old brother named Dale who once gave Doug a hard time when he babysat him. He also had an on-again/off-again relationship with rich girl Beebe Bluff and a crush on a girl by the name of Loretta. Skeeter helps Doug order from the popular Bluffington restaurant The Honker Burger (later demolished) in the series premiere (resulting in their friendship), and later helps him to learn to dance. He has a superhero alter ego by the name of Silver Skeeter, based on The Silver Surfer from Marvel, who helps Quailman, Doug's superhero alter ego, in several situations. It is revealed that Skeeter is a genius, gaining the respect of geeky twins Al and Moo Sleech. He is very laid-back and willing to take any situation in stride. His hobbies include air guitar, listening to The Beets, and hanging at the Honker Burger. It is often speculated by fans and critics of the show that Skeeter was African-American (due to his facial features), despite his blue skin. Skeeter was voiced by Fred Newman.

• Patti Mayonnaise : The girl on whom Doug has a crush. She has orange skin and blond hair and is apparently from the South, as she has a distinct Southern accent. She seemed to like Doug to a certain degree throughout the series, but it was previously unknown whether or not she reciprocated his feelings. Her father, Chad, is confined to a wheelchair and her mother is deceased, as it is learned in the episode where Doug causes her old house to cave in by throwing rocks at it. In some episodes of Disney's Doug, she has a superheroic persona called Supersport. Patti was voiced by Constance Shulman. In one later episode, Patti lets Doug know her true feelings for her and they engage in sexual intercourse...since they didn't use protection one can infer that soon they will have children....USE CONDOMS.

• Roger Klotz : He is a typical wrong-side-of-the-tracks bully. Lived with his divorced mother and beloved cat, Stinky, in a trailer park, but they became rich in the Disney version. He and his mother both have green skin. He has a crush on Doug's older sister, Judy. Roger was voiced by Billy West (1991-1994: The Series) and Chris Phillips (1996-1999: Disney's Doug). He's occasionally a friend of Doug in some episodes but is still bullying him every now and then.

• Porkchop : Doug's canine companion. He has anthropomorphic qualities but is still just a "normal" dog (similar to the appearances of Snowy in the French-Belgian comic book series The Adventures of Tintin and Pluto in various Disney animated cartoons), but his anthropomorphic characteristics might have been derived from Snoopy from Peanuts comic strips and animated cartoons. He had a doghouse in the backyard that was shaped like an igloo, in the Disney version it was a teepee. Porkchop's typical dog sounds were provided by Fred Newman.

• Beebe Bluff : A purple-skinned spoiled; and a friend of Patti's, Doug's, and Skeeter's. She has an on-again/off-again relationship with Doug's best friend, Skeeter. She was the daughter of Bill Bluff, who was a rich businessman and descendant of Bluffington's founder, Thaddeus Bluff. Her mother owned the town's local ballet company. Her rich family made her somewhat spoiled, and a bit of a snob and a complainer. Her father funded the middle school where the students went, and not surprisingly he named it after her (Beebe Bluff Middle School), which was shaped like Beebe's head from an aerial view. She is often compared to a modern day Veruca Salt. Beebe was voiced by Alice Playten.

• Judith Anastasia Funnie : Doug's tan-skinned, beatnik/performance artist 16-year-old sister. Eventually becomes more mellowed out and relaxed in Disney's Doug. Judy was voiced by Becca Lish.

• Theda Funnie : Doug and Judy's mother. She is the common housewife but is also a working mom on some occasions. She has pink skin and tends to be very meek-mannered. However, in one episode, she upbraids Mayor White at a town meeting on the issue of litter in Bluffington. Theda was voiced by Becca Lish.

• Phil Funnie : Doug and Judy's father who is a department store photographer. He's outgoing and friendly, but also a bit nerdish, and a bit of a schmo. He has orange skin and is famous for giving advice and other lines throughout the series one of which is "The Ol' Funnie Fireball". He is also known for getting to play with (the best band ever) the Beets. Phil was voiced by Doug Preis.

• Bud Dink : Doug's spendthrift neighbor, whom Doug often turns to for advice. Known for his obnoxious Goofy-esque laugh and frequent new purchases of strange devices, always commenting that they were "very expensive." Also was Doug's scoutmaster for many episodes. He has purple skin. "Dink" comes from the acronym "Dual Income, No Kids" which fits this family perfectly. Mr. Dink was voiced by Fred Newman.

• Tippingdale "Tippy" Dink: Mr. Dink's wife, and later the (first-ever on the series) female Mayor of Bluffington. She is a slow talker, known for her sarcasm and deadpan reactions to her husband's stupidity. However, when Doug aired on ABC, her attitude changed. She is more active after defeating Bob White in an election for mayor of Bluffington and her deadpan reactions are far less frequent. Like her husband, Mrs. Dink has purple skin. Mrs. Dink was voiced by Doris Belack.

• Cleopatra Dirtbike Funnie : Doug's baby sister. Born on the Disney version, she has Caucasian-toned skin like Doug. Her name comes from a humorous series of events in the Christmas episode she was born in. Doug was checking his Christmas list and Judy questioned what he was looking at. He says they are name suggestions for the baby but Judy snatches the list and makes fun of the "names"(one of which was dirt bike) then sarcastically makes theatrically relevant suggestions(one of which was Cleopatra). At the end of the episode when the baby has been born, their mother(who was present during the argument) tells the siblings that she took a name suggestion from each of them. Dirtbike's vocal effects were provided by Fred Newman.

• Skunky Beaumont : Often mentioned in the Nick version as a troublemaker, but never appeared in the series. He first appeared in the Disney version, where he is portrayed as a Jeff Spicolli-esque "dude." Says the word "torque" as an adjective and sounds as if he's stoned or high.

• Chalky Studebaker : A friend of Doug's who is a jock and all-around talented kid, although he was under tremendous pressure to match the accomplishments of his older brother, who had amassed a very large trophy collection. This caused Chalky to cheat off of Doug in a particular episode. Chalky was voiced by Doug Preis.

• Connie Benge : Connie is a sweet, naïve, and overweight girl in Nick version while she is a slimmer, obnoxious Courtney Love-esque singer and songwriter in Disney version. Seems to have a small crush on Doug. In the Disney version, has a crush on Roger, which is ironic since in the Nick version she had a great dislike for Roger, even going as far as to punching him in the gut in the episode Doug Throws A Party after a game of Truth or Dare goes wrong. Connie was voiced by Becca Lish.

• Mrs. Wingo : Doug's green-skinned elementary school teacher. Mrs. Wingo was voiced by Doris Belack.

• Stinky : Roger's spoiled pink female cat. Originally thought to be male, but then had kittens. Stinky's typical cat sounds were provided by Fred Newman.

• William "Bill" Bluff III : The richest man in town, father of Beebe, and descendant of the town founder. Mr. Bluff was voiced by Doug Preis.

• Robert "Bob" White : The former mayor of Bluffington, who later becomes the middle school principal. Constantly asserting "Vote for Me!" even to elementary schoolers. Bob was voiced by Greg Lee.

• William "Willie" White : the ex-mayor's son and member of Roger's gang. Willie was voiced by Doug Preis.

• Albert "Al" Sleech and Moose "Moo" Sleech : Genius, yet socially inept twin brothers. Their father runs a bakery, and they have a dog named Captain Cosmo. Both Al and Moo are voiced by Eddie Korbich.

• Mr. Lamar Bone : The assistant principal at Bluffington School with a strong sense of authority. He is known to carry around a thick hardcover book on school code containing hundreds of thousands of rules, the vast majority of them seemingly pointless and silly. He is quick to punish without a thorough investigation, and is an avid yodeller (because of this he is an object of ridicule, particularly by Roger Klotz and his gang). He seems to have a taste for prunes, and is the inspiration of the Rulemeister, the Quizzler, and Robo-Bone, some of Quailman's (Doug Funnie's alter-ego) nemeses. He has a nephew named Percy Femur. In one episode, he changed his name to Mr. T-Bone. His voice uncannily resembles that of Don Knotts, as voiced by Doug Preis.

• Mr. Buttsavitch : the "never-seen" elementary school principal. Was seen as a giant floating head in one episode though, in a similar fashion to The Wizard of Oz. Much kinder in the sequence than his subordinate, Mr. Bone.

• Grandma Opal : Doug's maternal grandmother, who seems to be divorced or widowed. She also owns a motorcycle and might be in a biker gang. She is remembered for introducing her grandson to the Japanese delicacy of sushi, of which he was originally skeptical. She also indicates that at one time she was quite popular. Is thought to be based off the Grandma character from the Garfield comic strip.

• Grandma Funnie : Doug's paternal grandmother, who also appears to be divorced or widowed. She is a stereotypical kind grandmother who often spoils Doug with food. She lives by the philosophy that "simple is best" though her exact phrasing of this belief is absurdly convoluted.

• Boomer Bledsoe : A member of Roger's gang. Is nice to Doug in some episodes. Boomer was voiced by Chris Phillips.

• Ned Cauphee : a member of Roger's gang. Has 25 brothers. He once lived with the Funnie family for a brief time when his house was burned down. Has a hidden talent for playing the piano.

• Larry : the leader of a group of audio-visual nerds. Larry was voiced by Steve Higgins (1991-1994: The Series) and Chris Phillips (1996-1999: Disney's Doug).

• Fentruck Stimel : A foreign exchange student from the fictional country of Yakistonia. Doesn't make much prominence until the Disney version. In the Disney Christmas episode, he thinks Christmas is Halloween and that Halloween is Easter.

• Coach Spitz : Only appeared in a few episodes; he was a chauvinistic baseball coach who rejected females from baseball teams. Coach Spitz was voiced by Jeff Bergman.

• Percy Femur : The nephew of Mr. Bone, Percy is a tall, mean, and tough student who constantly bullied Roger until he was sent back to his old school (with the help of Doug). He makes small roles in the series and seems to be somewhat of a decent athlete.

• Mr. Shellacky : The Richard Simmons-esque guidance counselor of Doug's school in the original series. One example of his solutions for a problem is "take two hugs with a big glass of courage". Often wears a sweater that says "Hug Me". He is often obsessed with boosting confidence in order to solve problems, such as in the Troublemaker episode, where his solutions include getting Doug to "tell that troublemaker to flee, flee, flee" and associating Doug's middle name, Yancey, with the good Doug. He uses a lot of immature phrases such as in the Career Day episode where he tells Doug he recieved the wrong career because "It seems Mr. Computer had a little tummy ache."

• Mr. Swirly : The local ice cream and candy salesman in the original series. It was once discovered that cement was being poured into his candy, thus making his candy unpopular. It was later fixed. Mr. Swirly is often seen in his costume with a head shaped like an ice cream cone. Doug saved Student Government Day by suggesting that Mr. Swirly let the chocolate chips, which were about to hit the ice cream factory cooling fans, hit the fan, thus turning them into chocolate Swirlies (Doug's favorite). In the Disney version, Mr. Swirly sets up a local restaurant called "Swirly's" where the kids all hang out, since at this time, the Honker Burger has been sold.

Special characters

• Durango Doug A Clint Eastwood/John Wayne spoofed cowboy who "eats nails for lunch," and wears a live rattlesnake for a belt. Only appeared in one episode where Doug tried to ride a horse for the first time.
• Quailman : Doug's primary superhero and alter-ego, Quailman (along with sidekick, Quaildog AKA Porkchop) rescued the world on numerous occasions. Seen often wearing a cape, clean underwear over his pants, and a belt around his head, Quailman was a match for any evildoer using his three 'powers' -- patience, intelligence and speed. If those didn't work, there was always the "Quail Eye", a ray fired from his eyes which would render his enemies "helpless and stupified". Quailman's villains are often based on Roger, with "Klotz" always being part of their name, for example "Dr. Klotzenstien," "Klotzilla", "Baron Von Klotz", and "The Psyklotz." Mr. Bone was also a villain twice (RoboBone and the Rulemeister). His dark side is obviously based on Dark Superman in Superman III. He is a native of the planet Bob.
• Smash Adams : Doug's favorite action movie hero, clearly based on James Bond. His name is a possible reference to the superhero Atom Smasher. In the Disney series his franchise was massively retooled into a comedy series, much to Doug's displeasure, and possibly a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who starred in several comedies later in his career.
• The Neematoad : A mythical creature that supposedly lives in Lucky Duck Lake (in the pilot the neematoad is said to have lived in Stinson's Pond), it is the official mascot of Bluffington. Roger told Doug that the Neematoad call was "Calukakue" and Doug spent hours calling for one, while Roger and his gang hid while watching and laughing at him.
• Race Canyon : Doug's second favorite action hero based on Indiana Jones, wearing the fedora hat, leather sack on his side, etc. Skeeter was the sidekick Skeetari, and of course, Roger occasionally being the villain.
• The Waffle Stomper Doug's Steven Segal character known for his waffle iron shoe he used to stomp the bad guys and save Patti with.
• The Silver Skeeter : One of Quailman's sidekicks, obviously of Skeeter's creation. He is clearly based on The Silver Surfer. He's notable in that he's what Doug refers to as "too powerful" -- his stock of superpowers seems endless, to include transforming his body's shape, flight, or really anything that Skeeter believed needed to be done to resolve a problem as easily as possible. The Silver Skeeter hails from the planet popdiddalyumpwaogga, or something like that.
• Jack Bandit : Doug felt rebellious and he felt that he had to run away from school. He had to live on the lam as this character, camping out in the woods near school.
• Quaildog : Quailman's sidekick, based on Porkchop. Has all of the powers of Quailman, but also has the Quailtail, which is capable of such powers as lock-picking by physically altering Quaildog's tail into a new shape.
• Dylan Farnum : The fashionable heartthrob of the weekly teen drama "Teen Heart Street". Doug is accused of copying his clothing style when it is discovered that they dress identically for one week.
• Sky Davis : A spinoff of Michael "Air" Jordan's commercial sneaker-based success, he was a famous basketball player who also marketed his self-titled basketball sneakers - Sky Davis AirJets - which were sold in all sizes, up to 24-EEE. Doug discovers the last pair at a shoe store, only to find that they are too expensive for a full pair, although he had enough money for one shoe. Roger soon enters, purchasing the last pair of AirJets, rubbing his snide sense of achievement in Doug's face only to later fall flat from the massively oversized shoe. Doug meets Davis shortly afterwards and finds him to be a very down-to-earth individual with a love for old sneakers.
• The Magician: An illusionist Doug portrayed, who tried to impress Patti by performing magic tricks. His plan did not entirely succeed when he failed to make a pair of handcuffs disappear after he handcuffed himself to Patti and threw the key down an air vent. His "magic words" were, "Veni-Vidi-Vichi!"

The Beets

• The Beets : A rock band, comprised of Monroe Yoder, Wendy Nespott, Chap Lipman, and Flounder, that is descendant from both The Beatles (in name and somewhat Scouse accents) and The Rolling Stones (in appearance and sound), that Doug and Skeeter are big fans of, that later breaks up and go solo in the Disney version. The band's last album was titled Let it Beet, with an album cover parodying the Beatles' Let It Be. The Beets produced the songs: "Killer Tofu," "I Need More Allowance," "Where's my Sock" and "Shout Your Lungs Out." Numerous episodes involve Doug and Skeeter pursuing tickets to band's concerts, or the band members themselves. The band's original name was The Pickled Beets, a possible reference to the Beatles originally called the Silver Beetles. Their first #1 single was "I Sneezed On My Face." The band has developed a cult following with original viewers of the show.

• Beets Me - Mentioned in a trivia contest where Doug accidentaly guessed correctly (he said it because he didn't know). Contains a near-microscopic picture of Lipman after his gall bladder operation, referring to the Paul Is Dead conspiracy where many albums were reported to have hidden "clues" indicating Paul McCartney was dead.
• Meet the Beets - Parody of "Meet the Beatles."
• "Live in New Hamster" - Songs on this album include "Killer Tofu" and "Where's My Sock?". New Hamster is a play on New Hampshire.
• Bug in a Rug - A "new" Beets album in the video game Doug's Big Game.
• The What Album - Another album mentioned in Doug's Big Game. Parody of "The White Album."
• Let It Beet - The Beets' final album. Parody of "Let It Be", which happened to be the Beatles final album.
