Pornography based on the ethnicity of performers or interracial pornography is pornography that depicts sexual activity between performers of different ethnic groups.
Although ethnic pornography has always been a genre of pornography, it began growing in visibility during the 1980s. Its popularity grew during the 1990s, and in the 2000s it has become a prominent aspect of pornography.
Ethnic pornography typically employs ethnic and racial stereotypes in its depiction of performers.[1]
Ethnic pornography
Ethnic pornography intended for a general audience typically features members of significant minority ethnic groups, particularly those seen as exotic. Such people may be seen as sexually unattainable and therefore mysterious and exciting, or as promiscuous or sexually biddable. A viewer may be curious about what people of different ethnic groups look like with their clothes off, or in the visual contrast between people of different races. Ethnic pornigraphy may provide extra titillation by breaking taboos regarding socially unacceptable ethnic or racial stereotypes, interracial sex, or old anti-miscegenation laws.
As an example, pornography catering to Westerners' curiosity about Arabs has appeared in the wake of recent conflicts between the West and some countries in the Middle East. A new genre of Iraq War-themed pornography, depicting Western men and Arab women, has arisen in the mid-2000s, perhaps inspired by the Abu Ghraib scandal.[2]
Ethnic pornography may also be intended for members of an ethnic group who are interested in looking at people of their own group. For example, there are a number of Jewish pornography websites whose material seems primarily directed at Jews and Asian-themed sites that target East Asian men. There are also pornography websites aimed at the Arab, Indian and Pakistani markets, areas in which traditional morals and attitudes toward women make dating difficult or impossible for many young men.
Types of ethnic stereotypes in pornography
Ethnic pornography frequently depicts performers using ethnic and racial stereotypes.
- Asian women are often portrayed as either sexually aggressive or submissive. Western film and literature has promoted stereotypes of Asian women, such as depicting Asian women as cunning and seductive "Dragon Ladies",[3] as servile "Lotus Blossom Babies", "China dolls", "Geisha girls", war brides, or prostitutes.[4] Japanese media have also at times sensationalistically promoted the stereotype of Japanese women overseas as "yellow cabs".[5] Asian women are supposed to be submissive sex objects which has impeded women's economic mobility and has fostered increased demand in mail-order brides.
- Blacks/Africans are typically depicted as hypersexual. The virility and penis size of Black men is usually emphasized in ethnic pornography.[1]
- Latins/Hispanics are often stereotyped as overly sexualized characters. Many Latin performers are categorized by race and ethnicity, as it is to categorize any person, of any racial background, White, Black, mestizo, mulatto, or American Indian.[6]
Ethnic pornography preferences in different regions
Each different market has its own preferences, usually based on its own ethnic tensions and historical links with other ethnic groups, or in some cases little more that the "exotic"-ness of a particular ethnic group. Some of these are:
In the United States
- Asian (see Asian fetish): Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Filipino,[7] and Indonesian.
- South Asian: pornography features female performers who are of Bangladeshi, Indian, Nepalese, Pakistani, and Sri Lankan origin.
- Black: African-Americans and Afro-Latin Americans.
- European (normally only for a few specific fetishes): French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Scandinavian, and more recently Eastern European women, particularly from the countries of Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Romania.
- In American pornography, Germans are often associated with sadomasochistic themes. Nazi regalia and black leather frequently occur in these depictions; a German or German-accented dominatrix is a frequently recurring figure. Films such as Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS play on these stereotypes.
- In the 1960s and early 1970s, Scandinavia was frequently depicted as a sort of sexual paradise, a utopia of free love. Successful films from Sweden and Denmark, featuring sexual sub-themes, such as I Am Curious (Yellow) and Swedish Fly Girls furthered this stereotype.
- Latin/Latina: pornography features female performers who are (or appear to be) from Latin America or Latin Europe. Most are of Spanish, Portuguese, Native American, or Mestizo ancestry.
- Polynesian: Hawaiian.
- White: usually Americans of European American descent.

Interracial pornography
In the past, some of American pornography's leading white actresses were allegedly warned to avoid African-Americans, both on-screen and in their personal lives. One rationale was the wide-spread belief that appearing in interracial pornography would ruin a white performer's career, although some observers have said that there is no evidence that this is true.[1] Adult Video News critic Sheldon Ranz wrote in 1997 that "we keep hearing a lot about 'the powers that be' that tell white women that it's not in their 'interest' to work with blacks. Is there any proof that Ginger [Lynn]'s scene with Tony El-Lay in Undressed Rehearsal hurt her career? Nina Hartley still gets lots of bookings in Southern strip clubs, especially Texas, even though she is an avowed interracialist."[8]
In recent years, as interracial films have increased in popularity, either pressure for white performers to avoid interracial pornography has been reduced, pressure to engage in it has increased significantly, or many performers are ignoring warnings to avoid it. Many of these films still include racial stereotypes, but the segregation of actors by race has diminished considerably.[9][10][11]

So many girls [in the industry] said, 'Oh you can't be with [a black man] it's gonna ruin your career.' I think that's insane. I love black men, so I was really insistent about being on camera in an interracial [situation] because I didn't want to be part of that mentality.
