Big Brother (British TV series) series 1

Template:Big Brother endgame Big Brother was the first series of Big Brother in the UK, a reality show shown on Channel 4 in which a number of contestants live in an isolated house trying to avoid being evicted by the public with the aim of winning a large cash prize at the end of the run.

The first series was an unexpected summer hit in 2000. The first series started on 14 July 2000, and ended on 15 September 2000. Its most notorious moment occurred when attempts to influence voting by Nick Bateman (whom the tabloids nicknamed Nasty Nick) were uncovered by other housemates, who confronted him in a house meeting.

The first series was mainly viewed by the daily highlights programme. The only un-edited footage available was a largely inaccessible, poor quality (compared with later series) streaming internet video. As a consequence many of the contestants complained afterwards that the series producers had 'created' characters for them through editing that did not correspond with their true personalities.

Craig Phillips went on to win the £70,000 prize as the last remaining housemate.

Housemates

Ten housemates entered the House together on the first night and each week, one of them was evicted by the public vote. Due to Nick's ejection from the House in week 5, Claire was introduced into the House to replace him. On the final night, the public voted for the housemate they wanted to win, and Craig Phillips became the winner.

Andrew

Andrew 'Andy' Davidson was a 23 year old marketing product manager from Hemel Hempstead He had a university education and gained a BA Degree in English and Media Studies at Sussex. He was evicted on Day 22 with 68% of the vote and after working as a Go-Kart mechanic in Australia he currently works as a brand consultant. . He is the brother of Formula 1 racing driver Anthony Davidson.

Anna

Anna Nolan (born 16 October 1970) was a 29 year old office manager from Dublin who came from a large family of five sisters and one brother. Before entering Big Brother Anna worked as an office manager for a skateboarding company, but she has also worked as a banker, basketball coach, novice, domestic in a maternity hospital and a helper in a female prison. She said on Big Brother she was forced to come out as a lesbian to her parents when her grandma caught Anna and her girlfriend Tania kissing in the park.. She came second in the final, and went on to be a TV presenter for the Irish TV channel RTE. She announced in August 2006 that she would not be renewing her contract with RTE and moved on to be a presenter on the BBC programme Inside Out when the BBC North East and Cumbria crew filmed Anomalous Phenomena Investigations of Newcastle upon Tyne conducting a paranormal investigation at Hurworth Grange Community Centre in Hurworth-on-Tees. The show aired on 30 October 2006.

Caroline

Caroline (AKA 'Caggy') O'Shea ( born 1 April 1963 ) was a 37 year old from Birmingham of various jobs. Caroline was unemployed before entering Big Brother. her previous jobs have included mortgage consultant, telephonist, special constable for West Midlands Police, vocalist in a rave organisation, cleaner in a gay bar, makeovers, and sold sex toys. She was evicted on Day 29 with 62% of the vote.

After Big Brother Caroline returned to her old job of selling sex toys in Birmingham, alongside occasional singing spots in clubs. However she also attempted to launch a pop career, recorded a single, but failed to gain a recording contract. Following this failure, in 2001, she suffered from depression. She was also offered £5,000 for topless modelling for the Sunday Sport. Caroline now runs a makeover portrait studio in London.

Claire

Claire Strutton was a 25 year old florist from Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. She entered the House on Day 37 as a replacement for Nick Bateman, who was ejected for cheating. She was then evicted on Day 50 with 79% of the vote. Following the Big Brother show Claire landed a role as presenter of a new six-part ITV series about dancefloor and clubbing culture entitled "Dance 2000". In 2001 Claire announced she was expecting a baby with fellow Big Brother housemate Tom McDermott. The couple began dating in February 2001 and it wasn't long before Claire became pregnant. The couple were said to have no plans to marry, preferring to concentrate on the baby and their burgeoning careers.

In 2003 Claire Strutton and Tom McDermott moved to Southern Spain with their toddler son Pierce, and ran a property website. Tom and Claire have since split up. Claire also made an appearance on The Salon. The reality hairdressing show on Channel 4.

Craig

Craig Phillips was a 28 year old building company owner from Liverpool. He won Big Brother with a narrow 51% of the vote and received £70,000, which he donated to Joanne Harris, a close personal friend who needed a heart and lung transplant, due to having Down's Syndrome. As this treatment was unavailable in Britain free on the NHS for Down's Syndrome specifically, the only way for her to get the operation done was to pay for it privately abroad, which had been a financial impossibility before Craig won the show.

Craig has appeared on the UKTV Style makeover show Our House and the BBC One daytime show Big Strong Boys as a resident handyman. He has also made many cameo appearances in the Channel 4 sketch show, Bo' Selecta and released a Christmas Single (At This Time of Year) that reached number 14 in the UK charts. He has since co-hosted several DIY shows and has since appeared on Back to Reality.

Darren

Darren Ramsay was a 23 year old from London who had previously worked at the Millennium Dome. He came third in the final and has since trained as a flight attendant.

Melanie

Melanie 'Mel' Hill was a 26 year old from London who worked in computer sales. She was seen to cultivate relationships with two different contestants, and was evicted on Day 57 with 69% of the vote and is now a newspaper and magazine journalist.

Melanie also dated Alex Sibley from Big Brother 2002 (UK) for a time.

Nick

Nicholas 'Nick' Bateman was a 32 year old city broker from Hampshire. He had attempted to influence voting, although this was uncovered by other housemates on Day 35, who confronted him in a house meeting. He denied the allegations until the evidence was presented to him — housemate names, secretly written on scraps of paper hidden in his suitcase. Nick was removed from the house later that day by the show's producers for rule-breaking. He has since appeared on Back to Reality.

Nichola

Nichola Holt was a 29 year old art teacher from Bolton. She was evicted on Day 36 with 72% of the vote and currently works in the adult film industry. She released a single entitled "the game" which failed to chart in the top 40.

Sada

Sada Wilkington was 28 years old and from Edinburgh and Wakefield. She was evicted on Day 15 with 55% of the vote and trained as a yoga instructor. She currently lives in Argentina.

Tom

Thomas 'Tom' McDermott was a 31 year old farmer and computer engineer from Omagh. He was evicted on Day 43 with 30% of the vote. He has had a child with fellow contestant Claire Strutton but they have since split up.

Template:Fnb In week 7, Darren's nomination for Melanie and Craig was overheard by the rest of the house. Big Brother decided to cancel all the nominations and the housemates had to nominate for a second time in which Darren changed his nominations. Had this not happened, Claire, Craig, Darren and Melanie would have faced the public vote.
