Vickie Lynn Guerrero, née Lara (born April 16, 1968) is an American professional wrestling personality and widow of professional wrestler Eddie Guerrero currently working for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) on its SmackDown brand, where she is the (storyline) General Manager, as well as the (storyline) wife of Edge.

She has also made appearances at different venues in memory of her husband such as collecting "The Star of the Mountain Award" in Eddie's hometown, El Paso, Texas, and speaking on WWE.com about Eddie's induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.

2005–2006

In 2005, Vickie began to make cameo appearances during the feud between Eddie and Rey Mysterio, which had escalated when Eddie promised to reveal the secret of Rey's son, Dominick. Vickie was on the July 14 2005 episode of SmackDown! with two of Eddie's three daughters to stop Eddie from revealing Rey's secret. Eddie promised not to reveal the secret should he lose to Rey at The Great American Bash[2], though that turned out to be another one of his character's trademark lies. Vickie later reappeared at SummerSlam 2005 to convince Eddie to put a stop to his war with Rey and not to go through with the "Custody of Dominick" ladder match that night. When that failed, she had to cost him the match by pushing over ladder he was on as he about to win.[3]

On November 13 2005, Eddie Guerrero died of heart failure in his Minneapolis hotel room and was found by his nephew Chavo.[4] This led to Rey Mysterio, real-life friends with Eddie, getting a significant push, and at WrestleMania 22, he defeated Kurt Angle and Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship. Vickie and her nephew, Chavo, congratulated Mysterio on the stage ramp following his victory.[5] In 2006, about 7-8 months after Eddie's death, Vickie started appearing more prominently in more controversial storylines. She first asserted herself during a feud between Rey and Chavo Guerrero when Chavo accused Rey of being "nothing but a leech living off the blood of the Guerrero name" on the August 4 episode of SmackDown!. A fight broke out after that statement, and Vickie came out to separate it.[6] Subsequently, she acted as peacemaker between the two former friends until she seemingly inadvertently interfered in their match at SummerSlam 2006, costing Mysterio the match.[7] She then betrayed him by siding with Chavo and hitting Mysterio in the back with a steel chair on the following episode of SmackDown!, effectively turning heel.[8] On the September 1 edition of SmackDown!, she declared herself Chavo's business manager and Rey an "insignificant chapter" in her past.[9][10]

At No Mercy 2006, Chavo lost to Rey Mysterio in a Falls Count Anywhere Match.[11] After the match, Vickie verbally assaulted Rey Mysterio. On the following SmackDown!, Chavo and Vickie challenged Rey Mysterio to an "I Quit" match which he accepted.[12] On October 20 2006, Rey Mysterio quit after he was stuck in a light tower off the side of the stage. During the match, Mysterio had the advantage until Vickie interfered with one of his high flying moves, causing Chavo to take advantage by bashing Mysterio's leg with a chair until he quit. Mysterio was then taken out of the arena on a stretcher.[13]

On October 27, 2006, Chris Benoit asked Vickie why she and Chavo betrayed Rey.[14] Vickie replied, "Now Chris, Rey never gave my family a chance to move on, and I know that you and Eddie were also very close, but not as close as you thought." Benoit then tried to figure out "what was Vickie doing regarding Eddie's estate" while defending the WWE United States Championship from Chavo. At Survivor Series 2006, Chavo kicked out of an attempted Sharpshooter, causing Benoit to knock Vickie off the ring apron and fall on her head. She then wore a neck brace and acted as though Benoit intentionally hit her.[15] On December 22, Chavo had another bout for the US Championship. Benoit put Chavo in the Crippler Crossface, but Vickie entered the ring and hit Benoit with the US Championship belt to break the hold, resulting in Chavo's disqualification. Chavo then shouted "If you wanted me to win the title, then stop getting me disqualified," before pushing Vickie over.[16]

2007

On the January 5 2007 edition of SmackDown! in an interview with Kristal, Vickie expressed frustration with people such as Chavo Guerrero and Chris Benoit for not allowing her to let go of the past and move on with her life.[17] She also claimed to be "emotionally distraught", and described experiencing many symptoms of psychological distress and unwellness. On the May 11 2007 edition of SmackDown!, Kristal convinced General Manager Theodore Long to give Guerrero an interview for the position as his assistant.[18] On the May 18 2007 edition of WWE SmackDown!, Vickie was given the interview[19] and a week later was given the job.[20]

On the June 29 2007 edition of SmackDown!, Vickie acted as interim general manager of SmackDown! while Theodore Long was planning his wedding with Kristal[21], who he became engaged to in the previous episode of SmackDown!.[22] She was soon named the maid of honor at Long and Kristal's "wedding".[23]

On the August 3, 2007 edition of SmackDown!, she announced that her nephew, Chavo Guerrero, will battle against Rey Mysterio at SummerSlam. Doing this had essentially turned her face, as she showed no bias towards Chavo.[24]

On the September 21, 2007 edition of Smackdown, from Teddy Long's hometown of Atlanta, Long and Kristal's wedding was unfulfilled[25], as Long suffered what was later diagnosed as a heart attack.[26] As a result, the following week, Vince McMahon named her the new General Manager because "the show must go on".[27] Later that night, she would force Hornswoggle to vacate the WWE Cruiserweight Championship from [28]On the November 23rd edition on Smackdown, she "punished" Edge for his interference in the championship match at the Survivor Series by making him the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, before revealing that she had begun a romantic relationship with him and had facilitated his "plan" to regain the belt. The two also shared a prolonged make-out scene backstage. Later in the night, as she and Edge were in the ring, The Undertaker performed a Tombstone Piledriver on Vickie after Edge ran out of the ring. Though Edge appeared to be concerned, his apparent cowardice would not allow him to intervene, with Edge even going so far as to turn away and cover his eyes to not witness The Undertaker destroying the alleged love of his life. Vickie returned a few weeks later on the December 14 edition of SmackDown! as a certified heel and, in a wheelchair, and made biased matches for Edge against Batista and The Undertaker.

2008

On January 11 2008 edition of Smackdown! Chavo Guerrero said that him and the whole Guerrero family were "disgusted" with Vickie for her relationship with Edge.

But 11 days later on ECW, when Edge aided Chavo in winning an ECW Championship match, Chavo (and the Guerrero family) later gave his blessings to the pair, stating that Edge was a "good guy" and wished he, Edge, and Vickie could be one "big happy family", and with that, the three of them (along with Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder, and later, Bam Neely) formed La Familia.

On the January 22 edition of ECW, Vickie convinced ECW General Manager Armando Estrada to make the ECW Title match between Chavo and CM Punk a No Disqualification Match, and with some interference from Edge, Chavo won the ECW Title, essentially giving Vickie influence over two brands, as well as giving La Familia two World Titles under their control.

At the Royal Rumble, Vickie got involved in the World title match with her champion boyfriend Edge against Rey Mysterio. Vickie took a 619 meant for Edge, allowing Edge to spear Mysterio and win the match to retain his title.

On the February 15, 2008 edition of Smackdown, Edge proposed to Vickie in a lavish ceremony in which she accepted. The event was interrupted by Rey Mysterio who gave Edge a 619 and then springboarded off the top rope landing on Vickie in her wheelchair.

On the May 16, 2008 edition of SmackDown, Vickie received a complaint from the WWE Board of Directors regarding her decision to strip The Undertaker of the World Heavyweight Championship, and for her personal relationship with Edge. She was forced to compete in a match against The Undertaker or give up her job as GM. She competed in her first match, but changed it by making it a six-on-one handicap match, adding the rest of La Familia to her side. However, Bam Neely and Chavo Guerrero both refused to compete and walked out. Vickie did not wrestle in the match, but was almost chokeslammed by The Undertaker, until Edge saved her.

On the special July 4, 2008 edition of Smackdown, Edge took his frustrations out on Vickie (because he lost his championship title to CM Punk) and told her the wedding was off.[29] But on the July 11 2008 edition, Edge re-proposed to Vickie after Smackdown has gone off the air.[30] On July 18, 2008 at the wedding reception (the wedding had occurred off-screen before the show) Triple H came out and showed a video of Edge cheating on Vickie the day before with Alicia Fox, the wedding planner.[31] The angle continued at The Great American Bash when Fox attempted to hand Edge the WWE Championship belt to use as weapon, but was stopped with a clothesline by Vickie. Edge attempted to spear the referee to delay the match, but hit Vickie instead. Triple H used this distraction to recover and hit a Pedigree to retain his title.[32]

On the July 25th edition of SmackDown!, Edge attempted to be forgiven by Vickie, but instead she announced the return of The Undertaker, whom Edge would face at SummerSlam in a Hell in a Cell match.[33]

Criticism

2005-2006

Vickie Guerrero had not been a prominent part of WWE until a few months after the death of her husband, Eddie, and she has become a regular on screen personality since. During 2005-2006, her subplots strictly revolved around her late husband Eddie Guerrero. As such, some fans of professional wrestling were critical of Vickie's part in WWE angles, but primarily because they saw it as exploitation of her husband's death. [34][35] Such angles relating to the death of Eddie led to WWE being awarded the Wrestling Observer's "Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic" and Wrestlecrap's "2006 Gooker Award" in early 2007.

Chris Benoit, who was close friends with Eddie and involved with Vickie in related angles, was interviewed by SLAM! Wrestling about this subject, stating, "I don't believe it exploits the death of Eddie Guerrero. I don't see it that way." Also of note is the fact that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon stated during a news conference immediately following Eddie's death that the Guerrero family will receive royalties "forever." [36] This, too, may be seen in direct relation to Vickie's role with the company.

Personal life

Vickie was married to Eddie Guerrero on April 24, 1990 until his death on November 13, 2005. Together they have 2 daughters, Shaul Marie (born October 14, 1990)[37] and Sherilyn Amber (born July 8, 1995).[38] She is also a stepmother to Eddie's youngest daughter Kaylie Marie (born 2002) who was born during her and Eddie's brief marital separation. Hector Guerrero, Eddie's older brother, revealed in an interview that Vickie Guerrero is not currently speaking to the Guerrero family. He claimed that Vickie went into a seclusion, but the Guerrero family wishes her the best. [39]
