Welcome message

Hi, Jh12, Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the Five pillars of Wikipedia and simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will be by to help you shortly.

Additional tips

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

PS: This is not a bot and you did nothing to prompt this message. This is just a friendly welcome by a fellow Wikipedian.

Re: WPSchools template assistance

Hi Jh12. I made a couple of changes to your proposed replacement for {{WPSchool}}:

  1. Moved row breaks outside of #if statements
  2. Added a row break before the "needs-infobox" row
  3. Moved collaborations to subpage: User:Jh12/WPSchoolTest1/Collaborations

The first thing is possible because Mediawiki treats two consecutive "|-" with nothing in between them as if there was not an extra row. This greatly simplifies the creation of conditional rows in wikitables because you make the template much easier to read:

|-
{{#if:{{{param|}}}|
{{!}} Cell 1
{{!}} Cell 2
}}
|-

The missing row break before the "needs-infobox" row would have been a problem, so I added it. Having the collaborations as a subpage means that normal users can edit them without worrying about breaking the template. You will probably want this to be a subpage of Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools for more natural reuse.

Another general tip is that whitespace inside of ParserFunctions calls is stripped at the beginning and end, so I would encourage you to use linebreaks as I did above to increase readability. A pretty good example of a well-developed template that I've worked on is {{WikiProject California}}. It doesn't support needs-infobox, since there isn't a relevant infobox for that category, but it supports similar params that put the article into maintenance categories. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. Mike Dillon 18:25, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:University of Houston Logo 2.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:University of Houston Logo 2.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. WikiProject Schools Sidebar

Jh12, the sidebar looks great. Nice job. I'd be interested to know how the project status graph is updated. Also, I added some bottom and left margin to it for aesthetics; hope that's okay (if it's not I know what you will do).

Stowe schools

Jh12, thanks for saving the copy. I'm going to do a bit of research and see if there's enough to do for a Stowe Central School District article. With the celebs that live there I would think there should be some angle. I appreciate the help.

Template help

Hey Jh12! I've seen your work on the wikiproject school template. I am currently working on another wikiproject banner in my sandbox here. I am having some trouble:

  1. I am doing a section about book classification (children's books, picture books etc). In one classification, picture books. The word pic outside of the banner as shown here:
This article is part of WikiProject Children's literature, an attempt to build a comprehensive and detailed guide to children's and young adult literature on Wikipedia. If you would like to participate, you can edit one of the articles mentioned below, or visit the project page, where you can join the project.
??? This article has not yet received a type classification.
??? This article has not yet received a rating on the quality scale.
??? This article has not yet received a rating on the importance scale.

You can see the word pic' on the top left corner.

  1. Also I am trying to make a ??? line for the classification when the type isn't type in yet as well but it don't work. Please help. You could edit the template here. Thanks a lot. KGV 09:04, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed the "pic" issue. The problem was that {{#if:...}} was being used instead of {{#switch:...}}.
I'm going to be away from Wikipedia for a little while since I'm in the midst of moving, so hopefully you can help User:KGV with any more changes that need to be done. If not, try asking at WP:VPT. Mike Dillon 02:29, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ben Franklins School

I havent made the change, but I think its a B Fancy adding a few school assessments? I see you had a hand in the schools template. Can you explain why there are pages that have the template but lack the full definition

Oh and is there any harm in adding the template to a school that has not had one added yet Victuallers 19:30, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: The Redundant Category

I don't think the category (Category:School articles by quality) needs to exist at all unless there are shool articles not included under the wikiproject. This category could be made into a parent list for Universities and other schools, then it would be useful. Adam McCormick 22:14, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, should be fixed now. Thanks for your input. Adam McCormick 06:12, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

6th Earl of Mayo

I remember uploading that series of images. A good editor I knew (I think he was an admin at the time - this was about 3 years ago so I can't be sure) had scanned and uploaded a bunch of pictures from a book that was out of copyright due to age. Those pictures were all slanted (a scanning error), so I used a photo editor to rotate and crop them. I can't remember who that editor was (my first guess was User:Adam Bishop but I think that's wrong) nor can I remember anything else specific about the source. Sorry - ugen64 15:02, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that was me...I may have uploaded a pic of the 4th Earl though, when I was busy plagiarizing the Governor General of Canada's website many years ago. Adam Bishop 17:35, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding [Image:Mayo Main Bldg.jpg]]

Hi, I was able to communicate with User: Ydalal (talk · contribs) by email for his above image upload for article on Mayo College. I then went ahead and edited the image page originally created by him and provided the "Source" and "Fair use rationale" as per email communication with the user. I also deleted all earlier tags which mentioned that the image will be deleted if no source is provided in a few days.

Kindly visit the image page and see what I did is admissible and make any corrections needed, see if the tag used by me is right or kindly change that too if needed. My doubt is can I like this go in and provide source and licensing info for another user after communicating with him on email?

Here is the link to the relevant image page:

Image source problem with Image:BFHS New Orleans Falcon Logo.gif

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:BFHS New Orleans Falcon Logo.gif. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:52, 12 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Benjamin Franklin High School (New Orleans, Louisiana)

I have placed the GA nomination for Benjamin Franklin High School (New Orleans, Louisiana) on hold. There are a few issues with the article yet, namely an over-abundance of lists (is the list of courses really necessary? it doesn't seem to be sourced) and a trivia section. Also, the references should not have bold italic text in them. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters(Broken clamshellsOtter chirps) 01:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation

Hi, I noticed you edited Franklin High School (New Hampshire) and added a disambiguation statement. It seems that articles like that don't need that statement. The only articles that would need a "other uses" statement would ones with an ambiguous title. Since this article has (New Hampshire) in the NAME, it's very clear what the article is about. If a user got to this page, they obviously WANT to be there, and they CLEARLY didn't get there by accident. the "other uses" statement is for articles with ambiguous names. For example, there are many articles about "garden", but the most common one would be like a vegetation garden. So there may be incorrect wiki links to Garden, meaning to link to Garden, Michigan. Or they may use a search engine and get to Garden, meaning to link to Garden, Michigan.

Also, when you use the "other uses" statement, use the pre-made other uses template, rather than typing it out, so that wikipedia can be very consistent, and it's shorter with less clutter.

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions! --Dan LeveilleTALK 22:09, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Actually, the articles I'm working on right now are going a bit faster than I had figured. (How often does that happen?) Ah cool, thats fine. How much do you reckon needs doing before its at GA standard? Eventually I'd like to get a much more thorough history, but I will have to visit the Cambridge University Library at some point to find the books. Cheers rocketman89 (talk) 19:54, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LSU Ag Center

For now I've added the article to the category: Research institutes in the United States. Instead of an LSU System template, perhaps either a category for "Research institutes in Louisiana" and maybe add to an LSU System category. Let me see what else is out there. WikiProject California

Yes, my original edit of changing the template removed some of the template's functionality. I didn't relize that, so it was reverted and I understood that. But mainly I wanted to change the logo in order to stay consistent with all the other state banners. If they all use flags as their logos, then California should do the same? What kind people form a consensus and use a road sign instead of a state flag? Splat5572 (talk) 22:18, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. Your welcome for the award, it was an awesome thing to get that all together! Feel free to work on Portal:Saskatchewan I kind of stopped working on the SK portal awaiting a few more articles to get to feature status before trying to get the portal itself to feature status.
