Adoni is a municipality, mandal headquarters and commercial town in Kurnool district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is 140 miles (225 km) from Hyderabad and 307 miles (494 km) from Chennai by rail. It has a population of about 164,000 people (2005). Once a stronghold of the medieval Vijayanagar kingdom, today it has a substantial textile industry. The hill-fort, now in ruins, was an important seat of government in Islamic times and is frequently mentioned in the wars of the 18th century.

History

Adoni was under the rule of Yadavas in 16th century. At that time Adoni was known as Yadavagiri. Yadavagiri changed into Adavani under the Islamic rule. Later Adavani changed into Adoni. Under British rule Adoni was in Bellary district of Madras presidency.

In 1867 AD, The Adoni Municipal Council was created, along with the Bellary Municipal Council [1]. These were the only two municipal townships in the whole of Bellary district for a long time.

On October 1, 1953, Bellary district of Madras State was divided on linguistic basis, and Adoni (along with Yemmiganooru,Aalooru, Raayadurgam, D.Hirehaalu, Kanekallu,Bommanahaalu, and Gummagatta) were merged into Anantapuram and Karnoolu districts in what would later become the Andhra Pradesh state.

Adoni is known as the grain market of the south. It is also famous for its cloth and gold market as well as for cotton, ground nut and sunflower trading. It has more than 100 cotton mills and oil mills as such it is affectionalty called the Second Mumbai.

Hazrath Jamalullah alias Shehzade Vali Dargah is located near Railway Station. The Descendants of Hazrath Jamalullah alias Shehzade Vali live in Hyderabad and Raichur.

A famous temple of lord hanuman on a hill by name Ranmandla (Rana-mandalam)is a place to visit. A nice lake site of Ramjal water tank.Even a story is woven around the formation of this Ramjal (called Ramjalla locally). It is said that, during the 14 years of aranya vaasa, Rama accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana, passed through Adoni. Sita was thirsty by the time, she reached this place;there was no water source in vicinity, so Rama shot an arrow in the ground, then water splashed out, there by quenching Sita's thirst. Local Dhobis(washer men) even show some small well like construction, claim to have the arrow still deep in there. Apart from natural springs, water from Tungabhadra river fills up this tank, and is the source of water for entire town. The tank-bund is a nice place to visit especially in the evenings, and most importantly the birds which come in winter for a hault in the lake, it is very beauteous, many people visit to see the movement of the birds.

There is an age old Ganesha temple down the hill, better say, an idol carved out of rock, similar to siddi vinayak idol of Mumbai. There is a local saying that, when the water level reach the belly button of this idol, the whole town would drown in the water. Though never happened till date; touch wood! KRISHNA KIRAN MYSORE
