The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is an upcoming romantic-fantasy film scheduled for release on June 30, 2010.[1] It is based on Stephenie Meyer's Eclipse and will be the third installment of The Twilight Saga film series, following 2008's Twilight and 2009's New Moon. Summit Entertainment greenlit the film in February 2009.[1] Directed by David Slade, the film will star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprising their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, respectively.[2] Melissa Rosenberg will be returning as screenwriter.[3] Rachelle Lefevre, who played Victoria in the previous two installments, will not be returning due to scheduling conflicts; instead, Bryce Dallas Howard will play Victoria.[4] It will be the first Twilight film to be released in IMAX.[5]
Plot
Summit Entertainment released a plot summary of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on February 20, 2009, which states:
As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death.[1]
Cast
The Cullens and the Swans
- Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, who finds herself surrounded by danger and targeted by the vengeful vampire Victoria. In the meantime, she must choose between her love for vampire Edward Cullen and werewolf Jacob Black.[6]
- Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, Bella's vampire boyfriend who can read minds, except for Bella's.[7]
- Peter Facinelli as Carlisle Cullen, a compassionate doctor who acts as a father figure to the Cullen coven.[8]
- Elizabeth Reaser as Esme Cullen, a loving mother figure of the Cullen clan.[9][10]
- Ashley Greene as Alice Cullen, a member of the Cullen family who can see "subjective" visions of the future and who is close friends with Bella.[11] Alice is involved in a fight sequence that Greene calls "Cirque du Soleil-ish".[12]
- Kellan Lutz as Emmett Cullen, the strongest member of the Cullen family.[13]
- Nikki Reed as Rosalie Hale, the most beautiful member of the Cullen family.[14] Reed says she is looking forward to sharing her character's backstory in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse: "I shot an entire sequence in the 1930s. ...And it's intercut between a really amazing scene and moment that I have with Bella. ...It gives me the opportunity to explain myself."[12]
- Jackson Rathbone as Jasper Hale, a member of the Cullen coven who trains his family on how to fight newborn vampires and can control/manipulate emotions.[15] The film also explores Jasper's backstory as a human during the American Civil War before he was turned into a vampire.[15]
- Billy Burke as Charlie Swan, Bella's father[16] and Forks' Chief of Police.
Quileute tribe
- Tobey Magurie as Jacob Black,[2] Bella's best friend and a member of the Quileute tribe, who loves Bella.
- Chaske Spencer as Sam Uley, the leader of a werewolf pack that protects humans against predatory vampires.[17]
- Tinsel Korey as Emily Young, Sam's fiancée and a mother figure to the wolf pack.[18][19]
- Tyson Houseman as Quil Ateara, one of Jacob's best friends and a member of the wolf pack.[20]
- Alex Meraz as Paul, a volatile member of the wolf pack.[21]
- Kiowa Gordon as Embry Call, one of Jacob's best friends and a member of the wolf pack.[17]
- Bronson Pelletier as Jared, the joker of the wolf pack.[17]
- Julia Jones as Leah Clearwater,[22] the only female member of the werewolf pack.[23]
- Boo Boo Stewart as Seth Clearwater,[22] Leah's younger brother.
- Gil Birmingham as Billy Black,[2] Jacob's father and a Quileute elder.
Nomadic vampires
- Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria, a vampire who wants to kill Bella to avenge her mate, James.[4]
- Xavier Samuel as Riley, a "good-looking college student who joins the plot of villain Victoria to murder protagonist Bella."[24]
- Jodelle Ferland as Bree,[22] a newly turned vampire.[25]
- Catalina Sandino Moreno as Maria, the vampire who turned Jasper Hale into a vampire.[26]
- Kirsten Prout as Lucy, a vampire who helped create a vampire army with Maria, but was later killed by her and Jasper after turning on them.[27]
The Volturi
- Dakota Fanning as Jane, a guard of the Volturi who has the ability to torture people with illusions of pain.[28][29]
- Cameron Bright as Alec, Jane's twin brother who has the ability to block out others' senses.[19][30]
- Charlie Bewley as Demetri, a member of the Volturi[2] who has "unparalleled tracking abilities".[31]

- Sabrina Frank as Vera, Rosalie's friend of whom she was jealous for having a husband and child.[citation needed]
Production
Development
In early November 2008, Summit announced that they had attained the rights to the remaining books in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series: New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.[35] In February 2009, Summit confirmed that they would begin working on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. On the same day, it was announced that since New Moon director Chris Weitz would be in post-production for New Moon when The Twilight Saga: Eclipse began shooting, he would not be directing the third film.[36][37] Instead, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be helmed by director David Slade, with Melissa Rosenberg returning as screenwriter.[38]
In January 2010, an early draft of the film's script was leaked on the Internet.[39] The script presumably belonged to star Jackson Rathbone, as his name was watermarked across each page.[39]
Casting
Bryce Dallas Howard will be replacing Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria. Summit Entertainment attributed the change to scheduling conflicts, and Lefevre responded that she was "stunned" and "greatly saddened" by the decision.[40] Jodelle Ferland has been cast as the newly turned vampire, Bree.[22] Other new cast members include Xavier Samuel as Riley,[24] Jack Huston as Royce King II,[33] Catalina Sandino Moreno as Maria,[41]Julia Jones as Leah Clearwater,[22] and Boo Boo Stewart as Seth Clearwater.[22]
Filming and post-production
Principal photography began on August 17 at Vancouver Film Studios[42][43] and ended on October 29, 2009.[44] Howard Shore, who composed the scores for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, will compose the score for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.[45]
Sequel
Summit Entertainment announced in November 2008 that they had obtained the rights to the fourth book in Stephenie Meyer's series, Breaking Dawn.[46] Though Summit has not yet officially greenlit the project, stars Robert Pattinson and Ashley Greene have stated that there are plans for a Breaking Dawn film and that production is expected to begin after the completion of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.[47][48] Wyck Godfrey, producer of the previous films in the series, said, "...it's a little overwhelming to really think in a detailed manner of how we're going to crack this, but we have every intention to make Breaking Dawn."[49] When talking about Taylor Lautner's next film for Summit Entertainment, producer Wyck Godfrey stated, "Lautner will reprise his role of Jacob in "Breaking Dawn" beginning in late 2010, and it is likely that the final book will be divided into two films that will shoot back-to-back."[50]
