Son of actor Sivakumar, he starred in Tamil films, such as Nandha (2001), Kaakha Kaakha (2003), Pithamagan (2004), Perazhagan (2005), Ghajini (2005), Vaaranam Aayiram (2008) and Ayan (2009). As of 2009,[2] he has won three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards.

He became a film distributor after opening Studio Green, which distributed several of his earlier films. He married actress Jyothika Sadanah in 2006, after being engaged for several years. In 2008, he began Agaram Foundation, which funds for preventing early childhood drop-outs.[3]

Early life

Surya was born to actor Sivakumar and Lakshmi in Chennai, and brought up in Coimbatore. He is the eldest of three children, his younger brother is actor Karthik Sivakumar and he has a younger sister named Brindha Sivakumar.

He attended PSBB School [4] and St. Bede's School in Chennai[5] and graduated from Loyola College with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He worked in a textile company before venturing into films. He never had the idea of pursuing films and acting happened accidentally for Suriya.

Film career

Early Stages - 1997 to 2002

Surya debuted in the 1997 film Nerukku Ner directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam. He co-starred with actor Vijay. The film was declared a hit and Surya was noticed. In the next three years, he starredin five films. Yet, none of them were box office hits. Two of the movies saw his future wife Jyothika playing his love interest. In 2001, he starred in Friends, which was directed by Siddique. Again, he co-starred with Vijay. He was only offered a subdued role and could not prove his mettle.

His major break came in the form of Nandha, which was directed by Bala. Surya received a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. He played the role of an ex-convict who is very attached to his mother. He received numerous accolades for this performance. His next venture was Vikraman's Unnai Ninaithu, which was followed by Mounam Pesiyadhe. Both were hits and managed to run for 100 days.

Breakthrough - 2003 to 2007

In 2003, he starred in Kaaka Kaaka; a film about the life of a police officer. Kaaka Kaaka was his biggest hit at that time, catapulting him to star-status almost instantly. His love interest was played by Jyothika. This neat cop film, directed by Gautham Menon was the a major breakthrough in technical aspects then. His fan base increased tremendously and Surya grew as a star.

Then he starred in Pithamagan by Bala along with Vikram. Surya played a happy-go-lucky village crook with a comic touch, for which he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. Since he was shooting for these two films in 2003, he had to reject the lead role of Autograph, and consequently Cheran decided to take up the lead role.[6]

In 2004 he received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for playing two roles in Perazhagan. One was an aggressive boxer and the other was a handicapped phone booth keeper. Once again, Jyothika played his love interest. He also starred in Aayutha Ezhuthu which was based on George Reddy, a student leader in Hyderabad during the late 60s and early 70s. This film was directed by Mani Ratnam. This movie was star-studded, as it also included R. Madhavan, Meera Jasmine, Siddharth Narayan, Trisha Krishnan and Esha Deol, who played his love interest.

In 2005, he appeared in Ghajini and then in Aaru. He played a patient suffering from short term memory loss in Ghajini, which became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. This film promoted him further into the big league of stars, and gave him further recognition in other industries such as the Tollywood and Bollywood. Aamir Khan was inspired by Surya's Ghajini and decided to remake it under the same name.

Surya then set up a production company called Studio Green which distributed movies in the Chennai district. Surya's 2006 release was N. Krishna's Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. He acted opposite his wife Jyothika in the film. The film was a hit, mainly due to the Surya-Jyothika chemistry.

In 2007, Surya's solitary release was Vel, which went to become commercially successful.

Vaaranam Aayiram (2008) and beyond

In 2008, he appeared in Vaaranam Aayiram directed by Gautham Menon, which was released on 14 November 2008. This was his second outing with the director and expectations were sky-high. Fetching rave reviews and accolades for his performance, he won several awards, including a Filmfare Award for Best Actor, a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and a Vijay Award for Best Actor. It is regarded as his best performance to date. Surya played dual roles, of a son and a father, ranging from 17 to 75 years. He paired with three heroines Sameera Reddy, Divya Spandana and Simran Bagga. The film was a powerhouse performance from Surya because he changed his physique and mannerisms to suit the different roles. He slogged it out at the gym and introduced a new rage for the first time in Kollywood -- having well-toned six-pack abs. His fan base increased, more particularly, his female fan base. And people had started comparing him with the legend Kamal Haasan.

Surya's next film Ayan in 2009 was directed by K. V. Anand and released on 3 April 2009. The film was declared the only blockbuster of the year. He played the role of a smuggler, pairing with Tamanna Bhatia and is his biggest hit till date. His reputation as a saleable star increased. Following Ayan, Surya starred in Aadhavan directed by K. S. Ravikumar which was released worldwide on 17 October 2009. The film received mixed reviews but was a box office super hit. His 25th film, Singam, directed by Hari, became a grand box office success. He played the role of a police officer for the second time, pairing with Anushka Shetty.

He will make his Bollywood debut in Rakta Charitra, which is being directed by Ram Gopal Varma and is scheduled for a September 2010 release. He is currently working with Ghajini Director A.R. Murugadoss for the film 7aam Arivu in which he will be seen as a circus artist opposite Shruthi Haasan.

Philanthropy

In 2008, Surya began the Agaram Foundation[3], working to help children who drop out of school early in Tamil Nadu. With the Ministry of Education in Tamil Nadu, he created a short commercial video outlining child poverty, labour and lack of education, titled Herova? Zerova? [7]. The film was written and produced by Surya and also starred Joseph Vijay, R. Madhavan and Jyothika. Agaram has sponsored 159 underprevileged students in 2010 for their higher education in various disciplines. With the firm belief that the educated mind can not only eliminate social evils but also aid in the socio-economic upbringing of society, Agaram Foundation works towards providing appropriate learning opportunities to the rural populace who do not otherwise have access to quality education.[3]

He married actress Jyothika on 11 September 2006. He was in love with her since 2003, where both fell for each other on the sets of Kaakha Kaakha. On 10 August 2007, the couple's daughter Diya was born. On 7 June 2010, they were blessed with a baby boy, Dev. He resides with his whole family in T.Nagar, Chennai.
