Template:Infobox reality music competition The X Factor is an Australian television reality music competition, based on the original UK series, to find new singing talent. The second season premiered on 30 August 2010.[1] The first series was cancelled five years ago due to poor ratings, but the show was revived after Seven Network acquired the rights through meetings with creator Simon Cowell.[2] The show will be broadcast on the Seven Network, as opposed to Network Ten which aired the prior series. The second season was originally to be hosted by actor Matthew Newton replacing first season host Daniel MacPherson.[3][4] However, Newton was forced to quit the series during production after re-admitting himself to rehab and Luke Jacobz was announced as his replacement.[5][6] Seven will also air spin-off show The Xtra Factor immediately after the live performance show on 7Two and will be hosted by Natalie Garonzi.[7][8] Auditions took place throughout May and June 2010 with Kyle Sandilands, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Sebastian, and Ronan Keating joining the show as the brand new judging panel.[9]
Selection process
Auditions
The first appeal for auditions occurred through ads during the series four finale of Australia's Got Talent. The Auditions began in Perth on 30 May 2010 and concluded on 20 June 2010.[10]

Bootcamp
The "bootcamp" stage of the competition began on 25 June 2010 in the Big Top at Luna Park, Sydney.[11] This stage of the competition was aired on 5 and 6 September 2010. In this stage, each judge was first given a category to mentor and have to decide on their top 12 acts after day 1 and the top 6 acts after day 2. Natalie Imbruglia will mentor Girls Under 25, Kyle Sandilands has the Boys Under 25, Ronan Keating was given the 25s and Over and Guy Sebastian the Groups category.[12]
During Bootcamp the judges were assisted by musical artists to help them choose their twelve acts. DJ Havana Brown assisted with the Boys Under 25, MTV Australia CEO Rebecca Batties for the Girls Under 25, Keating's manager Mark Plunkett with the 25 and Over's and Rai Thistlethwayte, lead singer of Thirsty Merc, for the Group category.[12][13][14] After the judges, along with their guest mentors, narrowed down the contestants to six each:[15]
- Under 25 Boys – Andrew Lawson, Mitchell Smith, Chris Doe, George Walter, Darcy Callus and Thomas TJ Alcaniz
- Under 25 Girls – Samantha Clarke, India-Rose Madderom, Hayley Teal, Ashlee Bellchambers, Alice McDermott and Sally Chatfield
- 25 and Overs – Olivia Robins, Altiyan Childs, Amanda Grafanakis, Tony Munnings, James McNally and Max Jahufer
- Groups – Mahogany, Luke & Joel, The Real Sisters, Lazy J & Big Guy, Jahmakn It Funky and Kharizma (previously known as Rheeonya)
Judges' Houses
In the next round the judges reduced their six acts to three in locations around the world with guest judges assisting them. Sandilands was assisted by Kelly Rowland in New York, Richard Branson helped Imbruglia at Necker Island, Sebastian was helped by Snoop Dogg in Los Angeles and Usher in New York and Keating was assisted by his group Boyzone in Ireland.[16] After the judges, along with their guest mentors, narrowed down the contestants to three each:

Controversies
While on his way to film segments for The X Factor in Dublin, Matthew Newton made a stop in Italy to spend time with his then girlfriend, Rachael Taylor, where it is alleged that he made two unprovoked assaults on her.[18] Following these events Newton announced his departure from The X Factor and checked into Wentworthville's Northside West Clinic.[19][20] After the revelation of the attacks Taylor had taken out an AVO on Newton stating, "After much consideration and struggle I have made this personal decision to send a clear public message that violence, threats, abuse and intimidation are not acceptable and should be dealt with by the full capacity of the law[...]"[21] After his departure it was announced that actor Luke Jacobz would take over as host and all original audition footage with Newton was removed with footage of Jacobz being shot instead.[22][23]
Ratings
The first episode, which saw auditions in Sydney and Melbourne, achieved an audience of 1,186,000. The ratings were seen as a failure as it placed fifth overall for the night, being beaten by A Current Affair's interview with Patty and Bert Newton, the parents of former X Factor host Matthew Newton, about his exit from the show due to his alleged attack on his former girlfriend Rachel Taylor.[24] However, the premiere episode topped its timeslot.[25] The second episode rated higher than the first peaking at number four with an audience share of 1,482,000.[26] The ratings boost was credited to Seven's top rating show, Packed to the Rafters, which topped the nights overall ratings.[27] The third episode saw a slight drop in ratings achieving an audience share of 1,332,000 and peaking at number six.[28] The fourth episode reached an audience of 1,336,000 and was number one overall for the night.[26]
