==Re: St.George Day==

I wouldn't have minded you erasing my comments, because they were a little abrupt and didn't belong on article.
However, I am disappointed in you reverting back to what is totally untrue.
Wikipedia should contain truth.

St.Georges day is celebrated on the 23rd of April in England. It isn't 'moved' anywhere.
Christian churches hold St.George services on the nearest Sunday to the 23rd of April.

Template:WikiProject Dacia Invitation --Codrin.B (talk) 03:44, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for the invitation but I did the edits on the Dacian Draco article following a request at the GOCE Requests Page rather than from any specific interest in the topic. That said, please feel free to post any further requests for copyedits at that page and someone will respond. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 03:50, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Makes sense. And thanks sooo much! We could use some members that could help us with English and copy-editing. Best regards! --Codrin.B (talk) 03:56, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Another thought, it would be great to continue the trend and get the article to WP:GOOD now after DYK. I'm fairly new to this, but in my mind a great start would be a neutral reviewer checking it against the criteria for B-Class status and updating the findings in the WP Dacia tag on Dacian Draco's talk page (b1 through b5 items). Is your guild the right place for this? Thanks a lot and best regards! --Codrin.B (talk) 23:15, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Guild of Copyeditors just does copyediting. If you want to submit an article for WP:GA review have a look here. Alternatively, you can submit articles for Peer Review — you can find the instructions here. Good luck! Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 23:26, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thanks for reverting my edit. I was trying to add the artwork for their upcoming album (the artwork has been released), but I ended up doing it wrong, not knowing where to put it. I attempted to revert my edit myself, but it added an image that hadn't been there before, so I gave up, knowing that it would be reverted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.159.18.64 (talk) 21:31, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome but please create a sandbox if you want to play around with the wiki meta-language. Otherwise, things get screwed up as they did in this case. Best ► Philg88 ◄ talk 22:17, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you revert my changes to this article? All I did was make the poem and its translations coherent! Cgboeree (talk) 21:41, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, my mistake - it looked like you added "Bargol he maglomi baccan ſoma gymnoſophaon.
Agrama gymnoſophon labarem bacha bodamilomin.
Voluala barchin heman la lauoluola dramme pagloni." which is the type of jibberish vandals often insert. In this case .... Best ► Philg88 ◄ talk 21:46, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ratchet and Clank edit

Sorry to bother you, why exactly did you edit my contribution to the 'Sasha' post. All the information I changed is truthful, I'd know because I have all the Ratchet and Crank video games. Next time you 'edit' some information, make sure that the information you're 'editing' is false. If you desire proof of the facts I've stated, I'll be happy to show you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.106.135.147 (talk) 23:07, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No bother, but I think you must have the wrong editor as my username does not appear in the Ratchet and Clank edit history. As I revert hundreds of edits everyday it's hard to remember every one but I think a name like "Ratchet & Clank" would have lodged somewhere in my brain and I don't remember reverting it. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 23:18, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to butt in. It was List of Ratchet & Clank characters, and although reverted without edit summary, it was an unconstructive edit because it was carelessly stuck next to another sentence with no space, was grammatically incomprehensible, and unsourced. Cheers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:52, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Anna, I don't revert without a good reason and it seems there were several in this case. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 23:57, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're most welcome. I think you are a careful vandal-fighter. You were right to revert in this case. Don't worry about mistakes. I've made plenty. It happens.
Nice to see you doing such a lot of anti-vandal work. I notice that you've been getting cursed at on your talk page. That means you're doing something right. :) By the way, do you know how to use GIMP? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:09, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think it's necessary but it does get a bit boring sometimes removing "...is gay" from countless articles. Occasionally, some vandalism is actually funny but it's still vandalism. As for GIMP, you mean the Photoshop clone? Yes, I do know how to use it. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 00:17, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Hainan map

I just emailed you a preview of the topomap for Hainan. I'm waiting for it to be uploade. I've added some roads and cities, etc. If you want versions ranging from only roads, to a few cities, to nearly the current version, let me know and I will email them to you. This was my first experiment with GIMP. Not perfect, but probably helpful to visitors. If you spot any serious errors or omissions, please let me know.

Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:13, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'll take a look later. Best ► Philg88 ◄ talk 00:19, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Map looks good with the following comments:

  • text is hard to read against the background - change from black
  • airport symbol is too small and not colourful enough - Sanya Phoenix is barely visible.
  • Couple of major towns missing - Danzhou and Wuzhishan for starters. Maybe it should feature the 18 county capitals.
  • They have good back bacon in RT Mart.

Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 03:52, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I will add those. If you would like to give it a shot, I can skype you the master bmp files at various stages, plus the round dots.
I couldn't find the exact location for Wuzhi city. I made the airport symbol small so as not to be larger than the city symbol, but can still make it larger. Love the GIMP. Keep it in a trunk. Would love an IRC chat with you to help with the steps for layers and transparency tracing, if you are so inclined.
RT also has rats. Rogers has smoked salmon sides for 150. Nice. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:00, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've emailed you a shiny new airport symbol which you can resize to your requirement. When I get the chance to drop in on IRC I will. Best ► Philg88 ◄ talk 07:52, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This entry has very biased wording and not all of the reference links take you to working sites or sites that are legitimate to prove that reference. Is the Scotch bonnet-looking chili pepper commonly found in Haikou actually the Hainan Yellow Lantern Chili? If so, I will take a nice photo for the article. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:18, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed it is. As a local though, I would say that the Scotch Bonnet is a Hainan Lantern pepper lookalike :) Best ► Philg88 ◄ talk 03:21, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Very well. I will take a photo. I would like to point out, however, that the image in the Hainan Yellow Lantern Chili article shows a rather longer pepper, whereas the ones that I see in the market are quite stout, with seemingly more well-defined vertical indented lines. Is it possible that the current article image is inaccurate? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:28, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Basically it's a crap picture that I added. If you look at one of the small bottles of yellow Chilli sauce you'll see which one it is. Best ► Philg88 ◄ talk 03:32, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. It must be the same then. The bottles, (I guess you mean the ones with with no labels that contain way too much salt), are sold along side the peppers. Great. I will take the picture. I always thought those were the SB peppers. Lovely. Thanks.

Screwed up trying to edit

I just received a message because I screwed up an attempted edit of this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pharaohs

I don't know how to bring this issue to someone's attention but the person listed on the right side of the page as the 'current pretender' is just a woman who runs her only little religious group/cult and thinks she is bringing back the ancient Egyptian religion. She is in no way the pretender to the Egyptian throne. Her reference is her own website which is listed in the footnotes.

I really think her name should be taken out. It's really the equivalent of anyone putting their name in as the pretender. 76.122.134.129 (talk) 02:32, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was simply pointing out that actually it is probably more correct to talk of Paul as called rather than converted (in line with an essay by Stendahl and Paul's own language about the event- was about to work out citation but added the edit without as I have never done a wikipedia edit before and was unsure how) the information is legitimate and in line with scholarly thought so not sure why removed... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.178.177.217 (talk) 00:37, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The sources seem to say that. This one seems most credible. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:16, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that site calls it the "Songtao Reservoir Irrigation Area" whereas "Songtao Reservoir" is more concise. This is a similar issue to the one regarding cave names, i.e. use pinyin whenever possible. "松涛" doesn't mean "greenfield" anyway, it translates roughly as "Rolling wave" but that's an arbitary translation by me and hence irrelevent. My preference is for "Songtao Resrvoir". BTW, did you get my email about the map with the airport symbol? Best ► Philg88 ◄ talk 07:42, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good. I will move the page to Songtao Reservoir, and happily. I wasn't happy with Greenfield because of the dab "(Hainan)" at the end. Should I completely remove mention of Greenfield from the article? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:03, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Hainan map (redux)

I got the symbols. That looks better. Yours has colour and background. How would you feel about me sending you the image with the airport symbols in place, needing only the addition of the missing cities? I can send you the dots and you place them? If you're too busy, I will give it a shot.

You mentioned the black lettering being too hard to see. I cannot find a single map anywhere with lettering that's not black. We might have to lump that one. Other than that, I just realized that the map source can provide roads. I might start over. No biggie, it was a learning experience. What sayeth thee? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:07, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, send it - can you do so in Photoshop format? Is it layered? I will also redo the roads in Adobe Illustrator so that they look more "map like" i.e. with different coloured edges which is not possible in Photoshop or GIMP unless you have the patience of a saint—looking in the mirror I see no halo. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 08:13, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at this If you click map on the right, you can get the roads. Suitable?
No. The image is just a bmp.
What I need is someone to walk me through the process of making a map by tracing another. I have GIMP. I can make a layer and trace stuff. Then I can save the layer in some xclsx whatever gimp format that saves the layers. I can then clumsily fit the layer onto a new alpha in WPPaint (don't laugh). That's basically all I can figure out. I have trouble with a couple of things:
  • Moving the layer around over the new alpha and adjusting its size.
  • Adding a layer and making it somewhat transparent so I can trace elements of the alpha underneath.
Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:29, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, mapsforfree is having trouble displaying topo colour format (like the one in the article) at closeup zoom. It's not the firewall here. It's them. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:31, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For tracing purposes you will need to learn to use the "pen" tool which takes a bit of practice to get the hang of. As for layers, you can adjust the opacity in the layers panel. I would really recommend that you get hold of a copy of Photoshop. There are a billion tutorials for it out there.

As you say, there is a problem with maps for free right now so I can't get what I need. Do you have the original bare topo map that I could work from? Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 22:42, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyediting

I'm sure your copyediting is done with the best of intentions, but I think you need to become more familiar with the manual of style and keep an eye out for changing the meaning of what is written. Also, some changes at Castles in Great Britain and Ireland seem unnecessarily invasive without improving what is written. I think it is important to respect a writer's style; just because they have written something in a different way to how someone else might does not necessarily mean one needs to change as each may be equally valid. This ties in to allowing the writer's voice to come through the article. I've undone some of the changes you've made, and will provide a few examples of the reasoning behind my reversion.

  • You changed "Although a small number of castles had been built in England in the 1050s" to "Although a small number of similar structures were built in England during the 1050s". This implied that the structures built in England in this period were not castles. As the section Anglo-Saxon fortifications says, there were indeed castles so this change altered the meaning of the sentence, whether it was intentional or not.
  • You changed "During the 12th century, the Normans began to build more castles in stone" to "During the 12th century, the Normans built more castles of stone". The change from imperfect tense to perfect meant that the bit about more stone castles suddenly became restricted to the 12th century when it was actually the beginning of a process of building predominantly in stone that went on for centuries.
  • Here you added an endash into a word. Hyphens (-) rather than dashes (–) are used for prefixes, homographs, and compound modifiers per WP:HYPHEN.
  • You changed "Second World War" to "World War II"; "Second World War" is more common in British English and per WP:ENGVAR should be preferred in an article of this kind.
  • "Who's" is a contraction of "who is" or "who has" [1], the word you were looking for is "whose" [2].

These are only a sample of the problems. Many of your changes were an improvement, fixing typos dabing links etc, but I'd encourage you to in future be more circumspect in your copyediting. Nev1 (talk) 17:18, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments. Since you consider my copyediting sub-standard I will proceed no further on the article. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 21:01, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: St.George Day

I wouldn't have minded you erasing my comments, because they were a little abrupt and didn't belong on article. However, I am disappointed in you reverting back to what is totally untrue. Wikipedia should contain truth.

St.Georges day is celebrated on the 23rd of April in England. It isn't 'moved' anywhere. Christian churches hold St.George services on the nearest Sunday to the 23rd of April.
