Fair use rationale for Image:Mimino.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Mimino.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 20:42, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

Updated DYK query On 26 March, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Children and Youth Sports School, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Swimming pool image

There is no need to remove your diagram from the article pages, where it certainly serves a purpose! The "dull and boring" critique is a typical feature of FPC voting - it is a very tough test! Your image certainly has a value in the articles, but at FPC, we're looking for something really extraordinary - FP images need pizzazz, wow, or whatever you call it. Informative, but ordinary images don't usually succeed there. Keep up the good work, and do re-instate the images on relevant pages, please! Greetings, --Janke | Talk 17:43, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did it myself, your new diagram is much better than the old one. (Not FP yet, though, IMO ;-) --Janke | Talk 09:06, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Maria_Gorokhovskaya.jpg

I have tagged Image:Maria_Gorokhovskaya.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. Kelly hi! 01:53, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moscow Mathematical Papyrus

Regarding your edit on the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus here :[1], how could Vasily Struve have edited the papyrus in 1930 if he supposedly died in 1864? Secondly, if Struve died in 1864, he would be Russian (not Soviet) since the USSR only came into existence in 1917. Perhaps Struve edited the Moscow Math. Papyrus first before he died...but his work was only published in 1930? Unless there was a second later V. Struve who is not the same person as Wikipedia's Vasily Struve. Just an idea. Leoboudv (talk) 22:07, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As an Aside, Wikipedia is becoming stricter on the downloading of images on Wikicommons. Some of the better reasons you can give is "No revenue loss" or "Image is of a low resolution" for Fair use. If you don't give a reason, the image will likely be deleted within 3 days. Here is one image with several good fair use rationales that will be less likely to be challenged: [2] Regards, Leoboudv (talk) 22:16, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you on Struve II. I was confused here. Leoboudv (talk) 01:28, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I created a brief article on him here: Vasily Vasilievich Struve Hopefully it will remain on Wikipedia and not be nominated for deletion since it is rather brief. I gave your useful reference. Regards, Leoboudv (talk) 01:41, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Cmapm, Congratulations on your excellent article on Vasily Vasilievich Struve. Struve II would certainly be proud of your work on him. If every Wikipedia contributor were as good as you, Wikipedia would certainly exceed Encyclopaedia Brittanica in quality! (and there would be less spam or vandalism) By the Way, your English is excellent for someone from Russia. It can sometimes be hard to understand English if your first language is Russian. Sergei Baltacha and Olga (?)

Hi! I gather you have an interest in Olympic competitors for the Soviet Union, and you have edited Sergei Pavlovich Baltacha, among others. I'm wondering if you would be able to source some information for me. Sergei married an Olympic pentathlete named Olga, and they moved to Britain where two of their children, Sergei Baltacha Jr. and Elena Baltacha, have made a name for themselves in soccer and tennis, respectively. But nobody knows who this Olga is. Two Olgas - Olga Rukavishnikova and Olga Kuragina - won pentathlon medals for the Soviet Union in 1980, the same year that Sergei won bronze in the soccer. So is there any way to find out was it one of those? Cheers. Scolaire (talk) 21:10, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Vietnam People's Army 40 stamp block.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Vietnam People's Army 40 stamp block.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 03:09, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Druzhba-84.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Proposed deletion of List of international ice hockey competitions featuring NHL players

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of international ice hockey competitions featuring NHL players, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Low quality, biased (NHL focus instead of professional players), almost all sections suggested to be merged with their main articles, information available elsewhere

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Orphaned non-free image (File:Maxi Gnauck 1980 SO gymnastics film screenshot.jpg)

You've uploaded File:Maxi Gnauck 1980 SO gymnastics film screenshot.jpg, and indicated that it's used under Wikipedia's rules for non-free images. However, it's not presently used in any articles. Wikipedia policy requires that non-free images be either used or deleted, so if this image isn't used in an article in the next week, it will be deleted.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 06:26, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:1980 Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony.jpg, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

No free license to modify

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on [[Talk:File:1980 Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony.jpg|the article's talk page]] explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Samulili (talk) 10:41, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Cmapm! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 273 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Replaceable fair use File:Ludmilla Tourischeva.png

Thanks for uploading File:Ludmilla Tourischeva.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hammersoft (talk) 14:39, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 17:01, 15 June 2010 (UTC) [reply]
