Sahebganj (also spelt as Sahibganj) is the district headquarters of Sahebganj district of Jharkhand state, India.
Sahebganj means a place (ganj) of masters (sahebs or sahibs). The place is likely to have gotten its name because a number of English and other European people lived and worked in and around the railway station during the British Raj. Nevertheless, the district has remained inhabited by tribal people since time immemorial. The town is cosmopolitan, with people from Bihar, Bengal, and Jharkhand; and refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Geography
Sahebganj is located at 25°15′N 87°39′E / 25.25°N 87.65°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 16 metres (52 feet).
Demographics
As of 2011[update] India census,[2] Sahebganj had a population of 1,150,038. Males constitute 51.33% of the population and females 48.66%. Sahibganj has an average literacy rate of 53%, Lower than the national average of 74.4%: male literacy is 62.65%, and female literacy is 44.31%. In Sahibganj, 18.8% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Education
It has a very good Jesuit school called St. Xavier's School, Sahibganj and a good Christian school by the name of St. Joseph School, Sahibganj.[according to whom?] Other well known schools are Rajasthan High School, Railways High School, Trinity's Angels School and Girls' High School. It has two colleges in town called Sahibganj College and an evening college which is affiliated to S.K.University, Dumka. The alumni of St. Xavier's, St. Joseph, Railway High School and Rajasthan High School, Sahebganj are spread all over India and in different places around the globe. Sahibganj has given the country many Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, Engineers and Civil Servants.
Natural Beauty
Sahebganj's natural beauty includes the Rajmahal hills, situated at one side, and the river Ganges at the other side.
