Scott Samuel "Scooter" Braun (born June 18, 1981) is an American talent manager. He has two record labels: Raymond-Braun Media Group (RBMG) and Schoolboy Records.[2] For RBMG, which is a joint venture with R&B performer Usher, the most prominent artist Braun represents is Justin Bieber.[3] For Schoolboy Records, he represents PSY, Carly Rae Jepsen and Asher Roth.[4] He also represents The Wanted which is a British-Irish boy band that was formed in 2009.[4]

Early life and education

Braun was born in New York City[5] to Ervin and Susan Braun. Ervin's parents "had barely escaped" the Holocaust, and lived in Hungary until 1956. Just before the Soviet Union intervened to suppress the Hungarian Revolution, they fled to the United States. Ervin grew up in Queens, and became a dentist, along with Susan Schlussel, who became an orthodontist. After Ervin and Susan married, they settled in Greenwich, Connecticut.[6][7]

When Braun was in middle school, he entered a video documentary contest for National History Day. His entry was "a ten-minute thing about Jews in Hungary before, during and after the Holocaust." titled The Hungarian Conflict. The film won regionals, state, and then placed third in the nationals.[6] A member of Braun's family sent the film to Steven Spielberg's office, which, in turn, submitted Braun's video to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Braun considers Spielberg's response one of his most inspirational moments.[6]

Braun attended Greenwich High School and was class president.[8] He also played basketball from age 13 to 18 in the Amateur Athletic Union[6]

Braun went to college at Emory University in Atlanta. He also played college basketball at Emory until a disagreement with his coach during his sophomore year.[6]

Career

Braun began his career by organizing parties at Emory University.[8] Braun's parties drew notice throughout Atlanta, attracting celebrity performers like Ludacris and Britney Spears.[citation needed] By the end of his sophomore year, Braun formally established his own party-promotion business.[citation needed] In 2002, Braun was hired to plan afterparties in each of the five cities on the Anger Management Tour, featuring Ludacris and Eminem.[8]

This launch into the world of hip-hop led Braun to producer Jermaine Dupri, the director of So So Def Records. Braun was 19 years old when Dupri asked him to join So So Def in a marketing position, and 20 when Dupri named him So So Def's executive director for marketing.[9] Still in his sophomore year at Emory, Braun was working at So So Def and operating his party promotion business. Some of his larger events included parties for the 2003 NBA All-Star Game and after parties on the Britney Spears Onyx Hotel Tour.[8]

Roosevelt Field Mall incident

In March 2010, Braun was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, both misdemeanors.[10] After a crowd became unruly at Roosevelt Field Mall, police asked him to send out a tweet announcing the cancellation of an appearance by Justin Bieber. Police allege that he delayed for more than an hour. Braun denies the charges, indicating that he complied with the request twice within seven minutes.[10] On October 13, 2010, a pre-trial conference in the case was continued for rescheduling to a future date.[11]

On May 6, 2011, Braun's attorney, Ravi Batra, announced that the case had been settled. In a plea bargain, Bieber's record label and management company, Island Def Jam Record Music Group and Remster 3 LLC, agreed to plead guilty to a fire violation. Bieber, Batra said, would appear in a public service announcement, "...reach[ing] out to young people..." with a message about responsibility in cyberspace.[12]

Personal life

On June 18, 2011, Braun celebrated his 30th birthday at Hollywood's Music Box. Guests in attendance included Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Drew Gooden, Jimmy Iovine, Nicky Hilton along with performances by Justin Bieber, Asher Roth, MC Hammer, Jaden Smith and Usher.[13] Braun dated longtime girlfriend Carin Morris from 2007 to 2012. His brother, Adam, is the founder of Pencils of Promise; both Scooter and Bieber have worked in support of the organization.[14]
