"Tik Tik Boom"
Song
LabelRCA

"Tik Tik Boom" is a song recorded by American singer Britney Spears featuring T.I. for the former's self-titled eighth studio album, Britney Jean (2013). It was written by Spears, Anthony Preston, Onique "Sparrow" Williams, T.I., Andre Lindal, Damien LeRoy and Joakim Haukaas and produced by Preston and LeRoy. The song received generally mixed reviews, with one reviewer citing its lyrics as an "egregious lapse in judgment",[1] but another calling it a "smash".[2]

Background

In December 2012, it was announced that Spears has begun work on her eighth studio album.[3] Spears teased fans by tweeting "Blackout 2.0?" in response to fans on Twitter.[3] The title of "Tik Tik Boom" was later revealed in November 2013 and it was also made known that T.I. will appear on the track.[4] A demo of "Tik Tik Boom" performed by G.R.L. was speculated to be a demo of the Spears song;[5] this was later revealed to be true when the album was released.[6] Prior to the album's release, Spears hosted a listening party in Los Angeles in which she previewed four songs from Britney Jean; one of the songs previewed was "Tik Tik Boom".[2][7]

Composition

"Tik Tik Boom" is a Hip hop, EDM and R&B song;[8] it was written by Britney Spears, Anthony Preston, Onique "Sparrow" Williams, T.I., Andre Lindal, Damien LeRoy and Joakim Haukaas, while production was handled by Preston and co-production was done by LeRoy.[9] Spears urges her partner in the song to "talk dirty" to her, in the form of the lyric, "Talk dirty to me babe, every time I want it".[6] T.I. is described by Bradley Stern of MuuMuse to "come in later for a sex-drenched verse of his own".[6] Spears repeatedly sings "Tik tik tik tik tik tik boom" in the chorus of the song.[6]

Critical reception

Sophie Schillaci of MTV praised the song, writing that "Tik Tik Boom" is a "smash" and it "sneaks its way towards a supersonic climax in the chorus".[2] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard said that Spears is "extremely direct in her sexual prowes" on the song and "T.I. sounds raw and wicked atop the neon glow of the production".[10] Bradley Stern of MuuMuse wrote that "Tik Tik Boom", along with other songs, are "as personal as a lampshade" and the song is "the closest the album comes to bringing Blackout 2.0 to life"; he further wrote, "the slick #SomethingMoreUrban stomper squeezes Britney back into her 'Gimme More' stripper heels and gets her twirling back on the pole".[6]

Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine criticized "Tik Tik Boom", writing that it is "by far Britney Jean and company's most egregious lapse in judgment".[1] Genevieve Koski of The A.V. Club wrote that "Tik Tik Boom", along with "It Should Be Easy", "seem to be ported in from late 2009".[8] Writing for Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield stated that the "lackluster 'Tik Tik Boom' ... can't compare to her old Ying Yang Twins duet, '(I Got That) Boom Boom'";[11] while Nick Catucci of Entertainment Weekly called "Tik Tik Boom" "the bass bomb".[12]

After the release of Britney Jean, "Tik Tik Boom" debuted and peaked at number 16 on South Korea's International Gaon Digital Chart.[13]
