The Pinkprint is the upcoming third studio album by American rapper Nicki Minaj, scheduled to be released on December 15, 2014,[2] by Young Money, Cash Money and Republic Records. Looking to depart from the dance-pop elements from her second studio album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012), Minaj wanted to make a follow-up record influenced by her traditional hip hop. She collaborated with producers including Boi-1da, Cirkut, Da Internz, Detail, Dr. Luke, and Polow da Don to achieve her desired sound.

The album has been supported by the singles "Pills N Potions" and "Anaconda", which respectively peaked at numbers 24 and 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100; the latter track has become Minaj's highest-charting single to date in the United States.

Background and development

Minaj released her second studio album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in April 2012, and released a reissued version subtitled The Re-Up that November.[3][4] In 2013, she served as a judge during the twelfth season of American Idol, and entered the retail industry with the launch of her fragrances Pink Friday and Minajesty, and the introduction of her Kmart-exclusive clothing line.[5][6] Minaj first announced a follow-up album that year, in which she stated that her then-untitled third studio album would "focus on rap" and "feed the core rap fan", whereas Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded explored more prominent elements of dance music.[7] She further stated that she would begin writing material for the project later that year, after production was completed for her first feature film The Other Woman (2014). Minaj noted that there were currently no featured artists on the record, and commented that she was "just enjoying [the] creative process."[8]

In November 2013, Minaj described the project as "next level", "very different from anything I've done", and made clear that she just experimented with pop music but never had the intention to continue with the genre. She also stated that she is still "hungry" and just because she's had a successful career that wouldn't stop her from giving the fans what they wanted.[9] The album was officially announced to be titled The Pinkprint with the premiere of the track "Lookin Ass" along with its Nabil Elderkin-directed music video on February 12, 2014.[10] Its title reportedly references The Blueprint (2001) by Jay-Z, to which Minaj replied that "I think everybody knows how obsessed I am with Jay Z. He’s always been my favorite rapper", also adding that, "He did such a great job of creating this Blueprint brand for male rappers and I wanted to do that [for] female rappers to be able to pattern themselves with what I’ve done one day".[11] Later in February, Minaj stated that she preferred to confirm the album's release date "[when] the album is really done and I've lived with it for a long time".[12] In April, Minaj told MTV News "The tracks on [my next album] are back to my hip-hop roots. And I don't think it's something that I'm necessarily trying to do. As soon as I started working on my new album, that's just the songs that I've been writing". When asked if the album would have a track like Super Bass, one of her previous pop-friendly hits, Minaj shortly replied with "hell no".[13]

In September, Minaj stated that "it was her best album to date" saying "I have grown as a writer. I'm braver in terms of speaking about things I didn't feel comfortable sharing two years ago".[1] Later that month, Minaj characterized the album with it consisting out of "raw talent, emotion, hard spitting and everything that people have come to love about Nicki Minaj".[14]

Singles

Minaj announced "Pills n Potions" as the lead single at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.[15] It was released on May 21, 2014. The song peaked at number 24 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. "Anaconda" was released as the second single from the album on August 4, 2014.[16] The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Minaj's highest-charting single in the U.S. to date.[17] On October 26, Minaj revealed the cover art for her third single "Only" which features Drake, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown via Instagram. The song was released on October 28.

Release and promotion

In June 2014, rapper and fellow Young Money Entertainment labelmate Mack Maine revealed that The Pinkprint would be released before Tha Carter V by Lil Wayne;[18] Minaj later clarified that her record "will definitely be out in the fourth quarter of the year."[19] She first mentioned its cover during her verse in "True Colors" by Wiz Khalifa, in which she raps "They know I’m a mogul for real, I branded a color / Pink is the color, can’t wait to unveil The Pinkprint cover".[20] On August 27, 2014, Minaj announced through her Twitter account that the record would be released on November 24, 2014 in the United States.[21] During late October, her staff announced a delay in the release, which had been rescheduled for December 15.[2] On October 31, 2014 Minaj released a trailer for the album, the trailer was directed by Khalil Kavon and featured a mixture of Minaj's recent videos ("Pills n Potions", "Anaconda", "Lookin Ass") with cut-aways to a thumb being fingerprinted in pink ink.[22]

In contrast from the vibrantly-colored wardrobe and hairpieces she had become associated with earlier in her career, Minaj embraced a more understated image during promotional efforts for The Pinkprint. She opined that "You can either continue doing costumes or you can just say, 'Hey guess what? This will shock them even more. Doing nothing will shock them even more.'"[23]
