re: Synoptic table
It looks like you've spent a decent amount of time and effort on this; unfortunately, this concept is, IMO, fundamentally flawed and 'unfixable'. A synoptic table is an overly-simplistic, subjective, and outdated method of presenting this information. Detailed logarithmic timeline is a superior method of presenting similar information. Fraenir (talk) 15:19, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
- A synoptic table needs to use as a foundation a well-sourced template formatted by an expert in comparative history and geography. Otherwise, editors are forced to make several, major subjective and editorial decisions, which does not play to the strengths of Wikipedia.
- The primary appeal of a synoptic table is its simplicity and visual appeal. Relative beginners with an interest in a portal/starting point for exploring history is probably the primary intended target audience. Although your changes are superior, information-wise, it perhaps is already too complicated for this intended audience (while still suffering from several major inaccuracies).
- The time range for this concept is arbitrary. Personally, I'd begin with anatomically modern humans and end with the formation of several primary civilizations, but this is a personal, subjective opinion.
- The geographic scope is arbitrary. Personally, I'd split West Asia into Mesopotamia and Persia, Central Asia into its own, add West and East Siberia, perhaps add the Himalayas, split Japan into its own, add Sahul+, etc… but again, these are personal subjective choices which rather complicates something that should, conceptually, be watered down or simple. Achieving the proper geographic division requires a delicate balancing act, which again, does not play to the strengths of Wikipedia.
- This concept stems from an old-school approach and does not take advantage of technological improvements – an interactive map is a better way to present this information, for one.
- @User:Fraenir Thanks mate for your insight! I had this page flagged for deletion about a month ago. But it was objected. The creation of this new table is my answer to this objection. I still think it is the best to remove this page. ATBWikirictor (talk) 15:29, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Wikirictor talk • contribs 03:18, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
