== Move Draft Caillou Pettis to Article ==

Hi. I was wondering if you could change http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Caillou_Pettis_(Canadian_filmmaker) to an actual article page. Thanks. [[User:MovieFan2018|MovieFan2018]] ([[User talk:MovieFan2018|talk]]) 13:32, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Can you delete this image on the LB wikipedia, which you are an admin on? This is overriding an image at the Commons. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:01, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flags

Thanks for your work with the interwiki links on these flag templates. The best approach, in my opinion, is for these links to be moved to an unprotected subpage (usually /doc) so that editors can maintain them without needing administrative help. Therefore in future, could you maybe make this request? Note that Template:flag template documentation will automatically transclude the /doc subpage. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:06, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree but nevertheless the template itself has to be changed for this by an admin as nearly 100% of them are protected for edits by users without sysop-status. So I can add the documentation on the additionla documentation page but nevertheless a sysop will have to schnage the protected template. --Robby (talk) 15:07, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I understand that. But most admins will just do what you ask them. Unless they work with templates a lot they might not be familiar with the documentation templates. Cheers — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:40, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:52, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gaza Wertham

Please see talk page for Gaza Wertham on comments you left for me on his CSD. A merger of my sources to the correct spelling plus a redirect should do the trick. Chris (talk) 23:19, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

commons categories

Hi Robby. In the interests of maybe saving you some effort, it's not necessary to add the category name parameter to the {{commons category}} template, if it's exactly the same as the article title, as you did here. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 11:24, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DH85868993,
indeed at first sight adding the category name parameter to {{commons category}} is of no added value. But why is there then Category:Commons category template with no category set? I already found some bad links where the template did not work due to the fact that no category is available for the corresponding page of en-wikipedia. Best regards --Robby (talk) 18:31, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The catnam parameter of the commonscat template is 'intended for cases where the Commons category name is different from the Wikipedia page name'. A commonscat can be a bad link with or without the catnam parameter, these two things have nothing to do with each other. So if you find a commonscat template with a bad link, then it is useful if you repair it. But if you come across a valid use of a commonscat template without the catnam parameter, then it is not useful to add the parameter. So please don't add the catnam parameter when it is not needed. Thanks. Lklundin (talk) 22:38, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Lklundin,
This is not really new information for me. My question is now what is the use and the aim of the maintenance Category:Commons category template with no category set? As as explained by you I'm not able to see any added value in it!Robby (talk) 23:29, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Robby. According to Template_talk:Commons_category#Cat_for_empty_parameter_1, it seems that the category was originally created with the intention that parameter 1 should always be filled in, to prevent a page move converting a valid link into an invalid one. However, as pointed out at Category_talk:Commons_category_template_with_no_category_set, always populating parameter 1 doesn't definitively solve the problem because Commons categories can be renamed. As also suggested at Category_talk:Commons_category_template_with_no_category_set, a bot that checks whether the target actually exists at the Commons would probably be a better solution. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 02:32, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi DH85868993, as the suggestion to create a bot to verify this was already made in 2012, my optimism to see such a bot appearing in near future is very limited. But all this is still not giving me any added value for Category:Commons category template with no category set. --Robby (talk) 12:55, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I agree. As far as I'm concerned you're more than welcome to nominate it for deletion. DH85868993 (talk) 13:17, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I just suggested Category:Commons category template with no category set for deletion. --Robby (talk) 20:52, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. However, because it's a category, you can't use the {{prod}} template (that can only be used on articles) - you need to follow the process at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Procedure. Let me know if you need any assistance (the process can look a bit daunting if you haven't done it before). DH85868993 (talk) 21:03, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Categories Redux

Hello, I was about to let you know that your edit here wasn't harmful but also wasn't needed for that particular category and I just read the above. I hate to see a good editor waste their time because of a shortcoming in Wikipedia.

I handled WP:CFD nominations all the time. Would it be helpful if I nominated the category above on your behalf?

Thanks, RevelationDirect (talk) 00:18, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I just found your listing: it was there for a month and ended in no consensus. That's a pretty representative WP:CFD experience. (-: RevelationDirect (talk) 00:21, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of categories

I have declined your Proposed deletion of Category:Commons category template with no category set. Proposed deletion is not applicable in Category space. Please use the Categories for Discussion process instead. Instructions for initiating a CfD can be found at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. Thanks. Articles tagged as orphans

Hi Robby, I notice that you've tagged some species articles, such as Catharanthus trichophyllus, as orphans. In this case, the article is linked to from the genus article Catharanthus. While more incoming links might be desirable, for many species articles their genus article may for now be their only "parent". So I don't think they are orphans per WP:ORPH. Thanks Declangi (talk) 07:29, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Declangi thanks for the information. I've checked all the articles I've added this tag and verified them and then changed the articles accordingly as to delete this tag where unappropriated (I Hope I found all the articles).--Robby (talk) 18:47, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Robby, all looks well now. Declangi (talk) 19:48, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove the spaces before the equals sign in infoboxes, it makes them mnore difficult to read when editing. Also, if someone has put "right" in an image description, leave it there. It does no harm and might do some good. BMK (talk) 01:27, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has appointed a committee to lead the search for the foundation’s next Executive Director. One of our first tasks is to write the job description of the executive director position, and we are asking for input from the Wikimedia community. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey to help us better understand community and staff expectations for the Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director.

Commons categories

Thanks for patching up the commons cat after my dash style edit. I run into this a lot, and sometimes fail to notice, that styling en text per WP:MOS can break commons cat links. Is there an easy way to change those cat names, or make commons cat redirects to handle the style variation? Is it uncontroversial to fix such thing to follow the en MOS? Tips are pointers would be appreciated. Dicklyon (talk) 22:01, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed the links to commons categories is quite a complex issue. When starting with this issue I checked the page Category:Commons category template with no category set and on the pages listed there I just added the parameter category in order to make the pages disappear from this maintenance category.
But before doing this I first check whether there is such a category on commons and if there is non I deleted the template commonscat from the article page and adding in the summary 'Link to commons category deleted as there is no such category on commons'. This I still do this way nowadays, as I think that wikipedia is for users and users will most probably not appreciate to find themselves on an non-existing page on Commons.
By now if i find such a category I link this commons category on Wikidata to the article from which I found the link (to commons category on), except if there is not just a category about the article on commons but as well an article on commons then I link the articles on wikidata.
Moreover I add the statement (property) P373 (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P373 )on wikidata to the corresponding element on wikidata.
As I am not that sure that I managed to explain this quite complex way of working in an efficient way, do not hesitate to contact me if you need further explanations.
Best regards --Robby (talk) 14:31, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted this edit, because although c:Category:Liverpool to Manchester lines doesn't exist, c:Category:Liverpool to Manchester Lines does exist: the link was broken by Anthony Appleyard (talk · contribs) moving the page without cleaning up afterwards. This is part of a bigger problem, not least of which is the recent series of ill-considered mass page moves carried out by at least three people, see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways#Recent article moves removing capitalisation of 'line'. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:59, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for this. Additionally I've put all interwiki links on thi sperspective on wikidata wikidata:Q802671, where I've as well added the appropriated commons-category. Best regards Robby (talk) 17:57, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you continue to do this (example) - the thing to do is check the page history to see if it has been moved, and if it has (example), add an appropriate parameter to the {{commons category}} instead of removing it (example). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:03, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Dear User:Redrose64 Indeed in this case I've looped the existing category on commons and so I've made the change you mentioned. Generally I look for the corresponding categories and add them on wikidata and eventually fix the link on commons. In order to check how I proceed I invite you to have a look at my contributions on wikidata and not just having a look at my contributions here on en-wikipedia. In the meantime I've added the corresponding information for this item on wikidata. Nevertheless do not hesitate to continue to notice me on errors from my part. best regards. Commons category

Can you clarify the following diff? The template page states that if the page name is the same as the category name the parameter should be left blank. If I misunderstood I'd like to know the reason for next time. Thanks - Ai 05:41, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

The two parameters catnam and shownam (1 & 2) are optional, and are intended for cases where the Commons category name is different from the Wikipedia page name. A bot account currently runs a task which automatically fills in the first parameter where it is blank, thus providing some protection against category links breaking when pages are moved. It should therefore be safe to omit this when manually editing pages if the page title matches the Commons category title.

DEar Ai, the reason to add the parameter is to avoid the article/page to be listed in the hidden category Category:Commons category template with no category set. For articles in the main namespace the way I proceeded for this draft article is not necessary there is sufficient to add in wikidata the wikidata:Property:P373 in order to avoid the article to be listed in the previously mentioned maintenance category. If this short explaaiation is not clear enough do not hesitate to recontact me. Robby (talk) 20:17, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's clear, yes. Thank you! - Ai, 12:44, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
