Tina Turner has sold over 200 million records (albums and singles) worldwide. This is stated in numerous creditable new sources. The reference to 100 million in the Time article is incorrect.
In the article it is stated she renounced her American citizenship as she's now Swiss. The first paragraph should thus no longer read "American singer(...)" but Swiss, born American.

Not so - please see MOS:CONTEXTBIO. She was American when she became notable, and at the time of most if not all of the activities for which she is notable now. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:20, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This has been a recurring discussion on this article. On 23 July I applied a formulation that avoids placing her nationality in the first sentence, as inspired by the lead section of Vladimir Ashkenazy: Tina Turner is an internationally recognized singer, songwriter, and actress. She is originally from the United States, and has been a Swiss citizen since 2013.[1] Previously her description was an American-born Swiss singer, which did sound odd, as Tina was not known for yodeling! Then Roahgo changed the description again on 7 August, calling her just an American singer and marking that a minor edit so it escaped scrutiny.[2] What shall we do now? — JFGtalk 23:51, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
JFG, I think your wording is best and have reinstated it. SunCrow (talk) 01:43, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's OK though personally I'd prefer "American-born" in the opening sentence. The fact that she has taken out Swiss citizenship in her later years is irrelevant to her notability and is essentially trivial in an article about her life. Ghmyrtle (talk) 07:42, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Can we do better than "internationally recognized"? Do we even need that bit? It reads like the opening to a press release. Danish Ranger (talk) 09:06, 05 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
IMO Ghmyrtle has a good point: the short phrase "Tina Turner is an American-born singer" worked pretty well in terms of accurately describing the situation and giving appropriately minimal WP:WEIGHT to the fact that she's no longer a US citizen. Unfortunately it also attracts lots of drive-by editors who change it to "Tina Turner is an American-born Swiss singer" without regard for MOS:CONTEXTBIO, so we've ended up at the current solution. I wouldn't mind removing "internationally recognized" either, but then we end up with "Tina Turner was a singer" and you can bet we'll get lots of similar drive-by editors changing it to "Tina Turner is a Swiss singer". quant18 (talk) 05:25, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ghmyrtle and JFG both make salient points. The odd-sounding intro is what brought me to this talk page. In terms of nationality, she will always be American (or African American). Describing her as American-Swiss implies that one of her parents was Swiss. I suppose the current version will suffice since it's spelled out in the second sentence. 144.178.0.140 (talk) 23:51, 7 December 2019 (UTC) Darwin[reply]
Name
Can anybody get their hands on a copy of Tina's birth certificate? Right now, the article is ambiguous about her birth name. Under "early life", it says Anna Mae Bullock. Later in the article, it mentions Ike's contention that her birth name was Martha Nell Bullock. There is also a citation to a 1977 contract that Tina signed "Martha Nell Bullock"; I moved the information on that contract to the "early life" section and put it in a footnote. A copy of the contract is here: [3]. So we have ambiguity. I haven't been able to find a copy of the birth certificate in a quick online search. Can anyone help? It's a pretty important piece of information, and I'd like to make the article definitive on this point if possible. Thanks. SunCrow (talk) 11:07, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This has been discussed on previous occasions (check the archives). It has been suggested that, although her father registered her birth officially as Martha Nell, her mother disliked it and always called her Anna Mae, which was the name she always used thereafter except when necessary on legal documents. But to some extent that's supposition, and certainly not confirmed by any reliable sources of which I'm aware. Ghmyrtle (talk) 23:56, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
