Jupiter's Legacy is an American superhero streaming television series created by Steven S. DeKnight, based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, that premiered on Netflix on May 7, 2021. The series stars Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade, Matt Lanter and David Julian Hirsh.

Synopsis

Jupiter's Legacy follows the story of the world's first superheroes who received their powers in the 1930s. In the present day, they are the revered elder guard but their superpowered children struggle to live up to the legendary feats of their parents.[1]

Present Day: The children of Sheldon Sampson, aka The Utopian, Brandon, and Chloe struggle to live in the shadow of their father's legacy. Brandon pushes himself to prove he's a worthy successor to his father, while Chloe couldn't care less. Heroes old and new fight to bring down an old threat that has broken out of Supermax, or has he.

In 1929, Sheldon and his brother, Walter, are working in their father's steel company living a privileged life. Things take a turn when the stock market crash and their father commits suicide.

Present Day: Following the Blackstar incident, Sheldon scolds Brandon for going against the Code, despite the fact many people and law enforcement seem to support his choice. Brandon deals with the ramifications of taking a life and the loss of his friends. It is discovered that the Blackstar the heroes fought is not in fact Blackstar and no one knows where or how he came to be.

In 1929: Sheldon confronts a reporter over an expose on the family business and discovers his father was not the man he thought he was. Later, at his father's funeral, he has a seizure and is hospitalized after having a vision of an island and a voice telling him to go there.

Present Day: A band of villains led by a man named, Hutch, has a series of foiled heists in trying to complete a task for their boss. After what seems like a clean getaway they have a run-in with a drunk, disoriented Chloe who takes their ill-gotten goods.

In 1929: After the funeral, Sheldon's brother and friends become consider on what looks to be a deteriorating mental state. Worried about Sheldon's uncharacteristic behavior, George visits him. George is unable to figure out how to best help his friend while trying to deal with the turn in his fortune.

Production

Development

On July 17, 2018, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order for an eight-episode first season.[1] The series was created by Steven S. DeKnight, who is credited as an executive producer alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Dan McDermott.[1][2] On September 16, 2019, it was confirmed that DeKnight departed the series as showrunner over creative differences in the midst of the production for the first season.[3] In November 2019, it was announced that Sang Kyu Kim was taking over as showrunner, following DeKnight's exit from the series.[4]

Casting

In February 2019, it was announced that Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade and Matt Lanter would star in the series.[5][6] In April 2019, it was reported that Tenika Davis had been cast in a recurring role.[7] In August 2019, it was reported that Chase Tang had been cast as a supervillain.[8] In September 2020, Anna Akana was cast in recurring role.[9][10]

Filming

Principal photography for the first season was scheduled to initially commence in May 2019.[11] Filming for the first season commenced in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on July 2, 2019[12] and ended on January 24, 2020.[13] Additional reshoots occurred in January 2021.[14]

Release

On February 24, 2021, a teaser trailer for the series was released.[15] On April 7, 2021, Netflix released the official trailer for the series.[16] The official trailer for the series features "Play God" by British artist Sam Fender.[17][18] The series premiered on May 7, 2021.[19][20]
