The Battle of Sievierodonetsk is an ongoing military engagement that started on 2 March 2022 during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, as part of the Eastern Ukraine offensive. Sievierodonetsk is currently the acting administrative centre of Luhansk Oblast.
Battle
At around 15:00 on 28 February, Russian troops started to shell the city.[2] According to Serhiy Haidai, Governor of Luhansk Oblast, there was one casualty and several injured. Gas pipelines were also hit.[3]
On 2 March, fighting was reported in almost all villages nearby Sievierodonetsk.[4] Russian forces continued to shell the city, including a school gym acting as a bomb shelter. No deaths were reported.[5] At 15:20 of that day, ukrainian sources claimed that Russian troops tried to enter the city. There was no independant confirmation, as the claimed ukrainian offensive on Horlivka.[6]
