Kamen Rider Geats (仮面ライダーギーツ, Kamen Raidā Gītsu) is a Japanese tokusatsu drama series, the 33rd entry of Toei Company's Kamen Rider metaseries and the fourth series to debut during the Reiwa period. The series premiered on September 4, 2022, joining Avataro Sentai Donbrothers in the Super Hero Time line-up following the finale of Kamen Rider Revice.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Summary
The "Desire Grand Prix" is a virtual reality-based survival game where players must protect the city from a threat of a mysterious enemy called "Jyamato", each participant is bound by the game's rules to continue playing the game until they die while the winner rewarded with "the right to bring an ideal world to life". In other words, only the true heroes who win the competition can realize their desired reality.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Ace Ukiyo, a mysterious man who transforms into Kamen Rider Geats, won the previous Desire Grand Prix and made no real change to the world other than becoming a celebrity. But a new Desire Grand Prix begins with Ace and his rival Michinaga Azuma, a construction worker and fellow sole survivor of the previous game who transforms into Kamen Rider Buffa, joined by university graduate Keiwa Sakurai (Kamen Rider Tycoon) and social media influencer Neon Kurama (Kamen Rider Na-Go). Other new players also participate in the next waves of D.G.P., with some Riders like Kamen Rider Punkjack acting as non-playable individuals in certain rounds of the contest.
Production
The Kamen Rider Geats trademark was registered by Toei on May 23, 2022, and published on May 31, 2022.[8][9]
Geats was officially announced on July 22, 2022.[1][2][3][4][7] An online production announcement conference introducing the main cast and characters and the artist for the show's theme song was held on August 7, 2022.[10]
Geats was influenced by battle royale games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends, as well as Sword Art Online, Ready Player One, and Squid Game, including some inspiration from other battle royale-themed Heisei Kamen Rider entries, such as Kamen Rider Ryuki and Kamen Rider Gaim to appeal for their target audience.[4][5][7]
The main writer for Geats is Yuya Takahashi, who also was the main writer for Kamen Rider Ex-Aid and Kamen Rider Zero-One.[1][2][6][7]
The opening theme song is performed by Koda Kumi and Shōnan no Kaze.[10]
