Publication history
The water weird first appeared in the original, tournament-dungeon version of The Lost Caverns of Tsojconth (1976).[citation needed] It was later included in the first edition Monster Manual (1977), where Ernie Gygax is credited as its creator.[1]
The water weird appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in Monstrous Compendium Volume Two (1989),[2] and is reprinted in the Monstrous Manual (1993) under the "elemental, water kin" heading.[3]
The water weird appeared in third edition Dungeons & Dragons under the "elemental weird" heading in Monster Manual II (2002).[4] Elemental weirds were further detailed in "The Ecology of the Elemental Weird" in Dragon #347 (September 2006), which also described the lesser elemental weirds. Two additional types of elemental weird, the "ice weird" and the "snow weird", would appear in the Frostburn sourcebook.
Description
The water weird originates from the elemental plane of water, and attacks all living things, feeding on their essences.
Reception
The water weird was an "old personal favorite" of reviewer Mark Theurer.[5]
Rob Bricken for Gizmodo commented that "Sure, Water Weirds are chaotic evil water elementals, but this one just wants to give a dude a high five. Roll a Saving Throw against “Down Low, Too Slow!”"[6]
