2022 ← Junior Eurovision Song Contest → 2024

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is the upcoming 21st edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The contest is set to take place in Nice, France following the country's victory at the 2022 contest with the song "Oh maman!" by Lissandro.[2][3] Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster France Télévisions, the contest will be held at the Palais Nikaia.[4][5] This will be the second time that France will host the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in 2021.[6]

Location

Palais Nikaia, host venue of the 2023 contest.

The contest will take place at the Palais Nikaia in Nice, the fifth-largest city in France.[7] It will be the first time since 2019 that the contest is not held in a capital city.

Unlike in the Eurovision Song Contest, the winning country did not receive the automatic rights to host the next contest. However, since 2019, each contest has been hosted by the previous year's winning country, and since 2011 (with the exceptions of 2012 and 2018), the winning country has had the right of first refusal on hosting the following competition. In 2015, Italy was given the option to host but ultimately opted out of it.[8]

Following France's win in 2022, French head of delegation Alexandra Redde-Amiel and Director General of France Télévisions Delphine Ernotte revealed that the country wishes to host the contest in 2023.[9] On 3 April 2023, the EBU and France Télévisions announced that the contest would be held in Nice.[10]

Provisional list of participating countries

Visual design

The 2023 contest is the first edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to incorporate the Eurovision heart, which has been used in the adult contest since 2004, in its generic logo. The update was revealed during the host city announcement on 3 April 2023.[42]

During a European Broadcasting Union press conference on 10 May 2023 in Liverpool, where the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 was taking place, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, head of the French Eurovision delegation, announced the slogan of the contest, "Heroes".[43][44]

Other countries

For a country to be eligible for potential participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, with the exception of Australia, it needs to be an active member of the EBU.[45] 19 active EBU member broadcasters have so far confirmed non-participation prior to the announcement of the participants list by the EBU.

Associate EBU member

  •  Kazakhstan – On 6 June 2023, Kazakh broadcaster Khabar Agency announced that it would not participate in the 2023 contest.[46] The broadcaster will, however, still aim to air the contest.[47] In a statement published on 9 June which confirmed the withdrawal, the broadcaster explained that many factors were considered in making the decision to withdraw, including "internal circumstances" and "the goal of creating the best conditions for participation in the competition in 2024".[48]

Broadcasts

All participating broadcasters may choose to have on-site or remote commentators providing insight and voting information to their local audience. The European Broadcasting Union will also provide international live streams of the contest through their official YouTube channel with no commentary.
