A reference to the IPCC summary should be included, esp. the section which highlights the increased risk of extreme weather events such as heat waves with rises in average global temperatures. Current Heat Wave

Can someone state that the 2006 Heat Wave is going on right NOW

I haven't heard of a great deal of fatalities yet. It isn't exactly article-worthy at this point anyway - they need to often last weeks, not days, to raise the fatality rates and smash the records. Though a new wave could be building in this weekend... CrazyC83 19:45, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The FOX News, other news agencies, the two weather websites have actually declared that there are heat warnings and heat advisories being issued, now for nearly all of the U.S. Martial Law 21:12, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Heat wave Europe

This morning it has been confirmed that 2006 has its second heat wave in The Netherlands. This one is forecast to last at least another week, maybe even 10 days more. Physical damage

Several areas are reporting that the current heat wave has caused all manner of damage. In Shreveport, LA, it has caused water mains and lines to burst, and in other areas, it has caused roads to serverely buckle and crack. A Satellite link error is fouling my sig and causing me to log out automatically, so, please excuse the sig. If you live in a area affected by this heat wave, your news source will have more info. United States definition

I have found three sources (all .pdf city emergency/hazard plans) which refer to the "3 or more consecutive days above 90°F" stipulation as an official National Weather Service definition, or imply it due to other sections which refer to it[1](page 33),[2](down right now),[3](page 40); however, I can't find that specific definition anywhere on the NWS website, so either they're hiding it, or, more likely, the definition was discontinued recently (recently enough that countless media outlets referred to it this summer). Can anyone add?

Cause?

I looked and didn't find that the article gave a cause for heat waves. Does anyone know what is the cause? I know that global warming is said to be part of the cause, but what is the full cause? --Meraculas 20:54, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have now inserted what I know and what I have found about heat waves and the reasons that they happen. It is suprisingly difficult to find the information. I had to put a collection of different reasons to which they occur together from all the different causes I know of. This is because there is not one single cause. Definition

A peer-reviewed definition from the Glossary of Meteorology:

heat wave—(Also called hot wave, warm wave.) A period of abnormally and uncomfortably hot and usually humid weather.
To be a heat wave such a period should last at least one day, but conventionally it lasts from several days to several weeks. In 1900, A. T. Burrows more rigidly defined a “hot wave” as a spell of three or more days on each of which the maximum shade temperature reaches or exceeds 90°F. More realistically, the comfort criteria for any one region are dependent upon the normal conditions of that region. In the eastern United States, heat waves generally build up with southerly winds on the western flank of an anticyclone centered over the southeastern states, the air being warmed by passage over a land surface heated by the sun. Up until my edit today, the article claimed that the World Meteorological Organization defines a heat wave as a period of >5 days with a maximum temperature more than 5°C above the local average. This claim was uncited, and I can find no trustworthy source confirming that this is the WMO's preferred definition (excluding other web pages repeating this claim, presumably having used WP as their source). in fact, some legitimate sources suggest that the WMO does not have an official definition for a heat wave. The definition given seems to be based on an article by Frich who et al, who defined the "Heat Wave Duration Index" as the maximum "maximum period > 5 consecutive days with Tmax >5°C above the 1961–1990 daily Tmax normal". Fatalities

I have read that cold temperature extremes cause more deaths on average in the United States than heat waves. This article says the opposite. So I guess someone needs to find the source for that.

Limited Scope and Biased

I think the incidents etc are very biased in the sense that they present primarily a European/American/Australian definition of a heat wave. The temperatures mentioned are very much common in countries like India and major parts of Africa. A four day stretch of 40 C+ temperatures is normal. In fact places like Ahmedabad in western India are known to have the high temperature for the whole month of April and May above 40 C. The page on Geography of Ahmedabad can be used of reference which shows that temperatures remains in the 40's throughout the months of March to June.

A more thorough research of the weather records is required for this article to be complete and exhaustive.

Possible Heatwave

There may be a possible Hemispheric Heatwave soon. A good example is what happened in 2006 in BOTH Europe, North America, Asia when heat waves struck at the same time thus qualifying that one to be a "Hemispheric Heat wave" since the Northern Hemisphere was affected. 205.240.146.121 (talk) 16:57, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2008 Heat Wave/ 2008 Heat Storm

In general, I am not against pictures to illustrate a point. However, the current picture next to Mortality to, I suppose, illustrate perspriation is completly out of place. Hot chicks are great and all, but it is not representative of the kind of danger a heat wave causes. Prediction

Although it will be too late when this is added, perhaps a section on PREDICTING them? All forms of weather can (or should be able to) be predicted, so....

Copy Edit donation from Severe weather

Heat waves are generally capable of occurring at any geographic location. These weather phenomenon usually occur when large quantities of cool, dry air masses become stationary over an area for long periods of time. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean sea or any other large bodies of water then become presented underneath the stationary cool air mass. The cool air masses causes process of inversion to occur, which is unsuitable for clouds to develop. Without the presence of clouds, more severe radiation can be exposed upon an area, causing temperatures to increase at rapid rates.[1]

For example, the lack of high level clouds and low humidity in deserts can hardly constitute a cause of heat waves in such regions. Also, in the South-western Cape of South Africa, where I stay, heat waves are usually associated with low (not high) pressure systems, responsible for off-shore flow, a mechanism I suspect may also at work during heat wave episodes along the eastern and southern coasts of Australia.[reply]

Also, the section is copied from [[6]], and is almost certainly copyrighted.
I did find a good source on the formation of heat waves from the US National Weather Service, and used it to replace the copyrighted material. This backs-up with simple Bell curve shift using standard deviation to show statistical analysis confidence.

Definitions

The reference to September heat waves is a northern hemisphere view. It's currently Nov in Australia and heat waves are already beginning and will continue for some months. The weather bureau might have some references: www.bom.gov.au

Split

I recommend that we move the contents of the history section of the heat wave article to a new article, List of heat waves (currently a redirect to the source article). This would make the source article more readable, and would be more in keeping with Wikipedia's convention. Would appreciate other folks thoughts, as I've never done a split of this sort before. recent climate change text

In recent 3-4 decades, heat waves became more frequent and severe. The rise in temperature and humidity are the main causes. Extremely hot nights became twice more frequent. The area in which extremely hot summers are observed, is 50-100 times larger. The changes can not be explained by natural variability, and attributed by climate scientists to the influence of anthropogenic climate change. Heat waves with high humidity pose a big risk to human health while heat waves with low humidity lead to dry conditions what increase wildfires. The mortality from extreme heat is bigger than the mortality from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes together[1].

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the severe heat waves across the northern hemisphere in the summer of 2018, are linked to climate change, as well as events of extreme precipitation. The results was increase in elderly mortality, severe decline in yields, the biggest algae blooming in the Baltic sea for decades, what have poisoned water both for human and animals use, shutting down nuclear power plants in Europe, because the water in the rivers, that is used for cooling the reactors was too warm, and electricity grids crashing across four continents. The impacts was severe, even in the countries considered come rich and well prepared to deal with the impacts of climate change.[2] [3]

My first thought is the first paragraph's use of English is beyond my willingness to try to fix. Also this text says the cause of heat waves is heat and humidity. And the reason for sunshine is sunshine, and the reason for rain is water falls out of the sky. I'm not willing to try to fix this. The second paragraph is was added as a subsection of under the earlier climate change heading, as though sources attribute the last iota of each and every impact to climate change. We don't have RSs that definitively exclude any contribution from internal variation of the climate system. Finally the last paragraph is also being worked on at Effects of global warming. Let's try to keep the job at one location for the time being and cross link from this article to that article. Or we could move from that one to this one, I don't care. There is a good number of reliable sources and the content is neutral for readers. I would suggest that under physical damages section, you can provide more information about physical damages of heat wave not simply on roads, rails, or places that have been modified by human. It should also address the consequences of heat wave in wilderness or other parts of the world that has not been constructed by humans. Hello... I see you are doing a class project. Sometimes classes talk about articles and talk about editing in class and among each other, but stop short of doing real work on our live articles. That's great, and so is doing real work on our articles. As a point of clarification, just a friendly question.... are you really wanting to do real work on the live article? If so, global warming is already mentioned in two sections of this article, and it could be covered better than it is. Marine Heat Wave

Consensus was: no consensus, leave the redirect extreme heat to here as it is (see here). How about we add a sentence about other meanings of extreme heat just to provide that context, User:BD2412? You had written "There are kinds of extreme heat that are not particularly related to a "heat wave", e.g., the temperatures inside stars, and temperatures achieved in various manufacturing activities and experiments. Re-arranged, moved and culled

I've re-arranged the article a bit to make future maintenance work easier: a lot of the same type of content about health impacts from heat was available at effects of climate change on human health so I have added some excerpts from that article. Also, I have moved a big text block that gave details for all the various heat illnesses to heat illness where it fits much better. Removed paragraph about ecosystems

I've removed this paragraph about ecosystems as I felt it was digressing and too much detail from a primary source (it had been added by a student), perhaps it could fit at climate change and ecosystems:

Heat waves and droughts as a result, minimize ecosystem carbon uptake.[1] Carbon uptake is also known as carbon sequestration. Updating Examples by country (United States) section

I've been working on the readability of the heat wave article. The penultimate section (Examples by country / United States) could benefit from some substantive edits, so I'm drawing this to the attention of editors following this page. The first paragraph mentions how 50 mln people were under heat advisories in 2019 and it was predicted that various highest low temperatures would be broken in the subsequent days. Presumably we now know whether records were broken so that could be updated. Or there may be a better example now from 2022 or even 2023. The third paragraph says deaths due to heat outnumber deaths due to all other forms of extreme weather. It compares them with deaths from floods and hurricanes, and mentions all other types of extreme weather at the end. But it does not include deaths from extreme cold. WP:RETAIN applies here, and the article should be written in American English, as that is what it started with. And the current title is the most common spelling in English based on the Google Ngrams I linked above, so per WP:COMMONNAME this article should not be moved. @Rreagan007 WP:RETAIN says "When no English variety has been established and discussion does not resolve the issue, use the variety found in the first post-stub revision that introduced an identifiable variety.".
Looking back, the first post-stub revision that pointed towards a variety is this revision by @CalgaryWikifan in August 2004. The key bit is "30 degrees (86 F) or more." By placing celcius first, with farenheit in brackets, we see an inkling towards British English.
