Early life and education
Lee Sang-yi was born in 1991 in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. His interest in acting began when he participated in an English play during his elementary school years at Jeongji Elementary School. Encouraged by his father, Lee started his acting career as a child actor, taking on supporting roles at an acting academy.[1] After graduating from Wonil Middle School, he pursued his passion for acting by enrolling in the Department of Theater and Film at Anyang Arts High School.[2]
During his time at Anyang Arts High School, he served as the student council president. His strong desire to connect with students from other departments led him to participate in the student council president election, where he was elected. In the week leading up to the election, he would arrive at school 30 minutes early every day to compose songs and sing while playing the guitar. His eagerness to make friends prompted him to create a Cyworld club, inviting prospective classmates to join and exchange contact information. Encouraged by his proactive approach, his peers encouraged him to continue taking on leadership roles.[1]
In 2008, Lee, still in high school, demonstrated his dance talent by winning first place in the J-Tune Company UCC contest. He impressed the audience with with his rendition of Rain's dance in "Rainism," which he shared on platforms like Daum TV Pod, Pikicast, and YouTube.[1][3] At that time, Lee's dreams changed frequently. He was unsure about his future and considered various paths, including becoming a guitarist, a professional gamer, and a stage designer. Ultimately, he discovered that acting combined all his interests and chose to pursue it as his career.[1]
In 2010, Lee enrolled in the School of Drama at Korea National University of Arts. He was part of the Class of 2010 in the Department of Acting, alongside classmates such as Kim Go-eun, Park So-dam, Lee Yoo-young, Ahn Eun-jin, Kim Sung-cheol, Cha Seo-won, and Lee Hwi-jong. During his college years, he was the head of the acting department's class, showcasing a strong drive for social interaction.[1][4]

Actor Park Hee-soon, a former member of the theater company Mokhwa, directed the musical with a unique approach that emphasized the individuality of each actor. Lee remarked, "Having been an actor himself, the director understands the actor's mindset better than anyone else."[7][8][9]
In 2016, Lee and Kang Young-seok were both cast as Nathan Leopold in the Korean production of Stephen Dolginoff's musical "Thrill Me."
