youtube

YouTube is jjj very popular, but at the same time the technical specifications are only poorely documentated by YouTube itself, almost ridiculous.

Therefore I appreciate people, who have tried to document on various blogs and other sites, what YouTube itself didn't. But among them are also many rumors.

a mistake. It would probably have a database and an entry type system sort of like the one already in use by wikipedia. It would also be possible to add text and hight quality images in a not conspicuous place, like under the video screen, that users would be able to access for more information. The additional content could even be another video itself, so that users could shift to that video if they felt like taking the video in another direction. Basically it's a very ritch multimedia contect that anyone could edit with a bit of practice and would include all types of myltimedia like videos, pictures, and sound.

For example, visitors would be able to watch a video and see something on the screen like an ipod that would flicker when a mouse is pointed at it that would take the viewer to a new video or page about that item. Users would also be able to connect parts of videos together if they feel like a smooth transition could be made from one video to another. Basically it would be like watching television that would never end because the videos would always lead to somewhere else, but the user would be able influence the overal direction where the video goes.

In another example, the software would analyze the users mouse movement patterns to determine the users interest and preferences and accordingly decide which videos to play inserting articles and sounds at sounds at particular times to enrich the experience. In a later version the user would also be able to provide imput or feedback through the keyboard and possibly microphone / camera.

Framerate

They contain various framerates:

  • Sources from NTSC countries tend to have 29 fps.
  • Sources from PAL countries tend to have 25 fps.
  • Sources uploaded from mobile phones feature various framerates somewhere inbetween 10-20 fps.
  • And other exotic framerates are present as well.

Conclusion: The YouTube re-encoding engine does not seem to change the framerate of source-material!

Picture Size

320x240 seems to be the maximum.

If videos are uploaded with a lower size, YouTube seems to leave their size untouched.

I came across videos featuring those aspect ratios:

  • 320/256=1.250
  • 240/180=1.333
  • 256/192=1.333

Conclusion: Not entirely clear to me. It must be something like this: If larger than 320x240 downscale (possibly distort aspect ratio), otherwise leave as is.

Apple TV/YouTube announcement

Being a long time wikipedia browsing-addict, I'm only just now getting to know the editing process. I'd love any suggestions, help, or criticisms (i don't even care if they're uncivil criticisms, honestly) regarding the information I added about the Apple TV's upcoming support/integration(?) with YouTube. I also added the fact that because of said announcement, all current content will be transcoded to the H.264 standard, while new content will be automatically encoded in H.264. I have a few sources, and I'm working out which are best to use and how exactly I go about setting up a footnote anyway. So soon after this announcement, there's not a whole lot that can be said beyond what I added, as much about the arrangement remains unknown. I think it would be good to follow the developments so we can flesh out the details (and potential effects on YouTube in terms of popularity, financial issues, and potentially even a large scale switch to H.264 video format(seems unlikely)) In the interest of full disclosure, I'm an unrepentant Apple admirer, and though I always try to present things fairly, I'm only human. So please, please, please tell me/change any perceived bias in my updates. Any more currently public details I missed, as well as good source material would also be appreciated. And a brief postscript: if this is the wrong place on the discussion page for me to have posted this, please go ahead and move it, and I'll gladly apologize and admit my ignorance. Come to think of it, I'll go ahead and admit my ignorance right now. (*Apology offer still applies. Valid through June 10, 2007) Dreadloco 18:13, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also coming across conflicting sources as to whether new uploads will be converted to h.264 starting in june (now) or starting on the release of the update by Apple... Dreadloco 18:31, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since I'm still not entirely clear on how to properly reference, and I'm still trying to find the best source, I think I'll get references up tomorrow unless someone is super nice and takes a look at it and helps me out or just adds references to it, as it might be pretty easy if I weren't so tired. Most Featured

Does anyone know if there is a verifiable source to check how many times an editor has been featured. I know Lasse Gjertsen has been on the front page at least four times, and possibly five. Cannot find a source to verify this however. After a length of time it no longer shows on the "Honours". Raerth 21:43, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Only some videos honor's are taken away. If some kids watch it, they see some one in the video might say some tiny swear, or something weak like "Crap" and flag it inappropiate. If Youtube feels it's needed, they then theive the video all honors.

Inconsistent listings under "Fame beyond YouTube"

When possible, should we list notable YouTubers by their full names? I'm torn on the issue. Ichormosquito 04:35, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

When they have articles we should, otherwise not IMO, SqueakBox 17:22, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here's what it might look like:

Personally, I think the improvised list we have now is more intuitive. Ichormosquito 19:35, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reasoning: The above list is more formal; but for consistency's sake, we might as well drop any pretense of listing human beings. We indiscriminately list YouTube serials with actual people. By focusing on usernames, everything on the list becomes of the same type: an entertainment venue. If we do end up going with a list like the one above, we should mention notable YouTube serials in a separate section. Ichormosquito 02:28, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would vote for listing by real name and display name in italics, no real justification for why though :) Raerth 21:49, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eh. I don't see the problem. This is a dynamic, online encyclopedia. If we can, why not list them? Ichormosquito 19:17, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reinstate this section!

A list is not really necessary because you can just go to the youtube front page for the most popular videos: featured, most viewed, most discussed, top favorites. If anything, all we should have is a mention of that somewhere in the article. Chainer29 05:01, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How does Youtube get money?

I was just on the site and didn't see any commercials or what so ever. How do they make money? Traffic?

I'm uploading a video right now and am looking at an ad for the Ford '08 Escape, so my guess eould be advertising + traffic.

Bad links?

Lots of porn links and such. Shouldn't those be taken out?

Agreed--website names that have nothing whatsoever to do with YouTube and simply contain "tube" within their name are just veiled attempts to get traffic. All such mentions should be kept out of this article! WorthWatching 18:02, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I feel that the link to "NetworkOne Australia" should be removed from the subtopic of Index sites under Technical Notes, its filled with lots of advertising, very little content and doesn't seem to be a particularly noteworthy site. 219.90.192.25 11:46, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Technical stuff re: honors, # of views, etc.

If anyone can find/has found technical information as to how much the "Honors" fluctuate, how often the view count is updated, etc., it would be educational to add. As someone following a particular serial, I've noticed that it seems to update about once an hour, and that after an honor ceases to apply (e.g., what was "Most Viewed (today)" is not necessarily the most viewed the following day), there doesn't seem to be any lasting record of the status achieved, the way there would be with a music single. Dealings with BBC and Scientology?

Should the events going on right now, related to the BBC's documentary "Scientology and me", be added to the page?

With careful wording, it could be. I'd say though that it may be worth waiting until it's all settled and see if it is worthy of putting it into the artile. --Andrewjd 18:25, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standards for YOUTUBE Celebrities

The standards for so-called YouTube celebrities has become totally absurd at this point. We need to develop standards and protocols for dealing with these users. Otherwise, they will take over the entire article. The entire section on FAME Beyond Youtube needs to be removed due to bias.

Sexyorge 14:15, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1) DO NOT ADD YOUR OWN YOUTUBE PAGE OR ANOTHER PERSON'S VIDEOS FOR THE PURPOSE OF ADVERTISING.
2) Add ONLY notable people, with references.
3) DO NOT ADD YOURSELF, OR SIMPLY SOMEONE WHO HAS HIGH INTERNET TRAFFIC VIA YOUTUBE.
4) DO NOT create an article for yourself and reference it here for means of advertising.
5) DO NOT add people that don't have Wikipedia articles of their own. Red links will be removed on-sight and the user adding them will be warned! Thanks.

These statements are ludicious. The notion of fame beyond youtube has nothing to do with the article. users, contributors need to stop promoting and advertising these people for their future careers. it's becoming a loose resume/cv. Sexyorge 14:25, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

recent changes in the YouTube Categories

Hi There :)

about 2 days ago, youtube removed a part of the video-section that referred to the categories in a way that allowed browsing videos with selected properties.

an example... i liked to browse ``top rated - this week - Howto & DIY´´. or i also liked ``top favourites - today - comedy´´. this is no longer possible! the only thing that you can get in a way so that it is sorted by categories is videos that youtube employees have selected.

this is a shift from an user-driven broadcasting system to a corporate-driven broadcasting system, from community to tv-station.

capnoawesome (not that important, he was simply the first one to do it) made a video about this, asking people to rate it up and spam it with comments and make video responses. in his oppinion the changes would ``kill the little guy´´.

the video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq4n7SsFCgk

this change in youtube marketing strategy and the wave of criticism it causes might deserve being mentioned in the main article.

Something is deffinately happening. The ability to search by category seems to come back. In YouTube's blog entry regarding that, they were caught in a lie. Many people seems to be unhappy about that.
(Basicually YouTube states that "It was actually not our intention to take this helpful function away from you." AFTER having sent many emails to people who wanted the function back, that said "We've recently made a few changes to our site. We've added some new features and replaced a few others. The search by category feature is no longer available. This has been replaced by the option to search based on "Relevance", "Date Added", "View Count" and "Rating".")

Download YouTube Videos

I keep on posting a link to a site called DownloadYouTube that lets users download youtube videos, but wikipedia user "esanchez" keeps on removing it. esanchez, also is posting the incorrect youtube terms of service. He says users cannot download youtube videos. But if you all go to YouTube's terms of service here:

http://youtube.com/t/terms

It clearly states this:

"If you download or print a copy of the Content for personal use, you must retain all copyright and other proprietary notices contained therein".

So you are allowed to download youtube videos as long as you follow the terms of service.

I do not know why "esanchez" cannot understand this.Daabomb 01:43, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is what it says on youtube's Terms of Use. "Content on the Website is provided to you AS IS for your information and personal use only and may not be downloaded, copied, reproduced, distributed, transmitted, broadcast, displayed, sold, licensed, or otherwise exploited for any other purposes whatsoever without the prior written consent of the respective owners".

Near the end it says "WITHOUT THE PRIOR WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE RESPECTIVE OWNERS". So you can download the videos as long as you get written consent from the video owner.Daabomb

Influence on other sites

A request was made to better reference this section, which I removed, here's why: One of the ways to definitively reference this section would be to simply list a bunch of websites with "tube" in their name--we all know they exist and why--however, this would open the door to turning this article into a not-so-subtle promotional platform for such knock-off websites, which we have been trying to avoid. I do not believe we should attempt to further reference this section, unless those names can be kept out entirely. WorthWatching 20:08, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I completely disagree with your assertion that "we should [not] attempt to further reference this section". I agree that simply listing *tube websites would be a mess. It would also be original research. But because that one particular method would be incorrect and problematic does not relieve us of the burden of supporting our assertions with quality references. If the material is worth including in this encyclopedia article then I'm sure there are a few good references. --ElKevbo 20:15, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, we're in agreement--you may have missed the conditional at the end: "...unless those names can be kept out entirely." Things ought to be referenced, but in this instance, I wanted to draw attention so we avoid having people take the easy road and just start listing *tube* websites, which would turn into a promotional zoo. WorthWatching 04:04, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. We seem to be in agreement. I've got enough zoos to babysit right now. :) --ElKevbo 04:11, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, I tried a couple times to add a preface to the section, so people seeing the notice don't decide to just list examples, but it didn't take; maybe I'm just doing it wrong. WorthWatching 04:57, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed this section - it was original research. Find me a reliable source noting that YouTube has had influence on other sites, and then we'll talk. --ZimZalaBim (talk) 01:15, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd have to really dispute his inclusion in this article. --Pruiz 06:55, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CNN-YouTube Presidential Debates

Is there any reason that this isn't mentioned in the article? I would add it myself, but things like this are usually posted sooner, so I figured that it had already been posted and removed. Is it not considered "notable" enough for the article, or does no one care enough to write about it? --Wikivader 23:13, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--I'm wondering the same thing. I came here to "check the facts" after seeing a number of the YouTube debate vidoes conveniently edited out or unable to download properly. I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but I'm guessing everyone's politically embarrassed about the candidness of the YouTube questions and wants to forget about it. Bollocks I say.

On the encoding of audio in YouTube videos.

In this article about YouTube it states that YouTube streams its videos with the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 codec in monaural format once videos are uploaded by registered users. But it is possible to include audio in uploaded videos as stereophonic. This user did so; and my point of this comment is to change what it says in 'Audio format' in the headline 'Technical Notes'.

- -MootTK 08:48, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can have YouTube videos with stereo sound, but you have to convert the file to the FLV format yourself if you want that. Two programs that do this (on Mac anyway) is ffmpegX and VisualHub. On Windows I believe Riva's FLV encoder will do the trick, as evidenced by this video on YouTube. Hope that should do it if you're going to add it to the article. -- M (speak/spoken) 12:55, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
