History
Back Story
Declan was raised by his single mother, Rebecca (played by Jane Hall), who had pursued relationships with numerous men over the years, none of whom Declan approved of. He knows nothing about his father, other than the fact that Rebecca refers to him as a "monster", but Declan has never questioned his mother about him any further.[1]As a teenager, Declan turned to a life of petty crime in order to help his mother financially.
Introduction
He has recently developed a friendship with 8-year-old Mickey Gannon (Fletcher O'Leary), the runaway son of Ned Parker (Daniel O'Connor). In late July, 2007, Mickey became an unwitting pawn in Declan's criminal activities on two occasions: first helping him steal a man's briefcase, then breaking into a house to steal a laptop computer. It is revealed that he and Oliver Barnes are full blooded brothers, thus, sharing the same father.
Drag Racing
He has also been involved in drag racing with Bridget Parker. Declan and Bridget have been drag racing against Justin Hunter because of his rivially with Bridget, and Declan always standing up for her. They have only stopped because they where caught by the police. Steve, Miranda and Rebecca then decided they should forbid Declan and Bridget from seeing each other.
Kidnapping
Con artist siblings Laura Davidson and Nick Thompson decide on kidnapping Declan to make Paul sweat and feel guilty and to get money out of Oliver. Luck plays into their hands when Declan goes on the run after being accused of the hit-and-run of Bridget Parker, since his car caused the accident (however, this was later dismissed as Susan Kennedy confessed to the accident). Nick invites Declan into their room at Lassiters and then Laura and Nick phone Oliver, demanding $200,000 or Declan will pay with his life. However, Oliver doesn't know how he can get the money since his assets have been frozen in a dispute with Sebastian Barnes. Paul discovers that Nick and Laura are the kidnappers. The kidnappers escape with Declan in their car. When her conscience gets the better of her, Laura frees Declan and he runs into the bush. Nick, who is intent on getting the $500,000, wants to find Declan as he will give Declan up for the money. When Oliver finally gets the money and phones Nick, arranging to meet with no cops and no other interference, Nick and Laura agree to meet. Adam Rhodes and his partner Sophie follow Oliver and Rebecca, whilst keeping their presence unknown. Nick demands the money before he gives up Declan. However, Oliver demands to see Declan or no money will be paid. Nick calls Declan out of the car, however Rebecca realizes that it isn't Declan, but Laura, attempting to give the appearance of a guy under a hoodie. It is then that Oliver and Nick struggle over the bag of money and the police arrive. Nick and Laura are arrested and Sophie and Adam attempt to reason with Laura and try to get her to reveal where Declan is. She shows the police the spot where she last saw Declan but can't provide any further information to help with the search. Declan was later found.
Bridget
He has feelings for resident tomboy Bridget Parker. He and Bridget have been having fights because of Declan getting Mickey (Bridget's Cousin) to steal stuff. On an abseiling trip Bridget accidentally loses her grip on a rope and lets Declan fall from a great height and Declan lays there unconscious. Declan and Bridget have also been involved in drag racing and have stopped recently because they got caught by the police and there parents forbid them from seeing each other. Declan in episode 5323 saved Bridget from drowning after she accidentally fell into the No. 30 pool and Rachel was gone to find snacks. They were about to kiss, but Bridget pulled away because of her being humiliated by her weakness after being run over by a car driven by Susan (accidentally got hit).
Running Away
Zeke had managed to persuade Susan to stay. She started to teach again, and when she arrived back at school, Declan was annoyed she wasn't in jail. When Susan asked Declan whether he had done his homework, he said "Nope. What you gonna do, run me over with your car?" Zeke then started a fight with him, and Pepper interrupted, and sent them both to the Principal. His mother, Rebecca got called in and after he eavesdropped on her and Susan discussion about him being close to Bridget and just going through teenage hormones he decided he should just cut his losses and run away. Declan called a cab and the driver turned about to be Frazer Yeats who didn't believe Declan after he told him he was going to see his friend in Sydney and called Oliver. Rebecca, Oliver and Paul came running to stop Declan from leaving put just as they got there, the train for Sydney had just departed and Rebecca thought it was too late. But lucky for them Declan backed out of going on the train at the last moment, and was sitting on the bench. After talking to Rebecca for a while, Declan decided to stay and start over, and took up Paul's offer of staying in Erinsborough.
