Problem with "Characteristics"

"In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Luigi became an esteemed author, writing a series of best-selling novels entitled Super Luigi, which tells the "true" story of his quest to save a princess from a distant land..."

This is not true. If you talk to Luigi after you beat the game, he says that he was interviewed about his adventure, and the Super Luigi books are "like a history book". This would imply that Luigi did not write the books himself. Hammer Bros. 01:00, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photo not from the original version

Isn't the picture from the SNES version?

Yes, is that a problem? Andre (talk) 00:34, Feb 1, 2005 (UTC)
No, don't be silly. That's from SMA, the remade SMB2.
Yes, it's from Super Mario Allstars, the SNES game. I updated the caption. Also, for anyone in future planning on taking a screenshot from their SNES emulator (you naughty things), please make sure you're not using some special display mode that changes the picture quality. An example is Snes9x's "SuperEagle" mode, which rounds all a sprite's edges. Whack it back to normal for your screenshots. Rufous 20:55, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

to my knowledge its for Nintendo Snes or a emulator (game compatability adapter) please tell me what a SUPER EAGLEmode is

Costume Changes?

One interesting thing to note would be the change in costume that Luigi, like Mario, has undergone since 1983. Luigi used to be Green and Grey/Brown depending on which version of Mario Bros. you played, and then in Super Mario Bros. they made him White and Green. After that, of course, his costume became as we know him now, but I figured it would be nice to note how he has changed thus far. --Yahweh 05:50, 11 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Luigi Mario

Luigi Mario is definetely his full name. I removed the text "believed to be [Luigi Mario]", "generally accepted as [canon]" and "it has never been supported by Nintendo," because it has. I directly mailed (snail mail) Nintendo many years ago when I was younger asking that question in particular, and they replied back telling me Luigi and Mario's last names were, in fact, "Mario." --Antoshi 07:17, 17 September 2005 (UTC) I highly doubt that[reply]

I'm quite disinclined to consider a letter to a fan, especially one introduced as anecdotal evidence, to be canonical. And the film and series certainly aren't canon. I believe that text should be replaced unless it's been shown that Miyamoto actually confirmed this. Other opinions? -- J44xm 22:10, 17 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I hardly doubt that Nintendo would lie to a fan. The original text for the article says that "Nintendo has not confirmed this", however says that Miyamoto, who created the characters, did confirm it. --Antoshi 07:38, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really a matter of lying, and I don't intend to

invalidate your letter. Nintendo of America has at times deviated from the source material. (Naming Peach "Toadstool" is a good example of this.) It's very possible that NoA did hold their surname to be Mario, but I'm not sure that anything even halfway canonical from Japan has ever claimed this. The article says that Miyamoto confirmed this, but there's no telling if that's true at all, which is why is should be mentioned with a grain of salt, as it were. Unless someone can confirm this, it's my opinion that the original text should be replaced, even if it's with a claim that NoA has, at least in the past, supported the Mario surname. (There's also a possibility that NoA retconned this.) -- J44xm 05:57, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I should go ahead and try to find as much evidence supporting this as possible. This way, there won't have to be any mix-ups, reverts or contested additions to the article. --Antoshi 08:32, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It wouldn't be a bad idea, honestly, because the Mario surname issue has been contested for some time. -- J44xm 03:50, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, after a while, I finally got this. From Deezer at themushroomkingdom.net:
"It's possible that there may not be another source. However, the title
"Mario Brothers" implies that they are brothers sharing the last name
"Mario". For example, the Everly Brothers are Don Everly and Phil
Everly. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everly_Brothers>"
That one is pretty obvious. Is it good enough to be considered canon? --Antoshi 20:53, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I can appreciate your effort on this. Believe you me, I've been wondering about this for decades. But to answer your question, it's not canon. This is conjecture. Like the quote says, it could imply that but such individual impressions and assumptions are far from canonical (e.g., a game clearly saying so, Miyamoto saying so on record), so the article shouldn't read that "Mario" is their last name. The article should read that it might actually be their name, and that certain evidence could support this (e.g., the name Mario Bros.); but it shouldn't be stated that it is their name until something hard and tangible comes from Nintendo of Japan to support this. I think there should be a note, in your favor, that Nintendo of America (who, for things like this, is more of a middleman, really) has, on occasion, said this is so in the past. -- J44xm 12:13, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The letters are original research and unverifiable. To cite WP itself -
Suppose you are writing a Wikipedia entry on a famous physicist's Theory X, which has been published in peer-reviewed journals and is therefore an appropriate subject for a Wikipedia article. However, in the course of writing the article, you contact the physicist and he tells you: "Actually, I now believe Theory X to be completely false." Even though you have this from the author himself, you cannot include the fact that he said it in your Wikipedia entry. Why not? Because it is not verifiable in a way that would satisfy the Wikipedia readership or other editors.
Basically, until some reputable sources start throwing it around (could happen one day, as interest in the Mario universe is quite strong and ever-increasing), the info is original research, and there isn't much that can be done about it. Mentioning the controversy would be fine, if you can indeed prove that there is controversy (shouldn't be too hard). Kil 18:46, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not even sure it's fair to call this bit speculation "widely believed among fans". It's a theory, but not one that's been widely documented. -- Lee Bailey(talk) 03:34, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, in Super Mario 64 DS, a certain toad is impressed with Luigi and says' we'll have to start calling you the Luigi brothers soon.' They only call them Mario bros. because Mario does everything. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.142.130.34 (talkcontribs) .

Actually, Mario and Luigi's last name is Serigali. If you see on G4, in Game Makers about Mario, you see that they say about Mario and Luigi's last name.

Still, I think that a letter from the creator of Luigi is completely indesputable; if Miyamoto says Luigi's last name is Mario, then it is. No two ways about it. Hammer Bros. 00:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Mario receives a letter which formally addresses him as "Mr. Mario" - although the game is not canonical with the main 'Mario' universe, I think we can agree that this instance along with the movie correlates towards the overall impression that Mario is their surname.143.92.1.40 (talk) 04:50, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Terms like "Mario Brothers" and "Mr. Mario" ALSO apply if the duo doesn't HAVE a surname. As far as I'm aware, the only Mario series characters with canonical surnames are E. Gadd and the Koopalings. Donkey Kong has one, it's true, but since the entire Kong clan plus several other major characters in the Donkey Kong series (such as K. Rool) have surnames, I'm treating that as part of the Donkey Kong series. Moreover, last names seem to be entirely optional in most Nintendo franchises (such as Metroid and the Zelda series), and many of Nintendo's most recognizable characters are referred to by only a first name OR a last name. The Donkey Kong and Starfox characters generally have last names, but in the vast landscape of Nintendo properties, they're the exception rather than the rule. Due to that, there's no reason to assume that Mario and Luigi definitely have last names and that we merely need to figure out what those may be - they might not have last names at all, and "Mario Brothers" might simply refer to "Mario and his brother" without any thought of last names. 65.33.206.108 (talk) 03:08, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Needs more images. Plus Anime OVA trilogy.

Compared to Mario's profile, Luigi seems lacking in images. All there is are the picture at the top of the article and Baby Luigi's picture.

Also, the article does not mention Luigi's appearance at the end of the Shiroyukihime chapter of the OVA trilogy. Here is a picture of his appearance in the story. - NES Boy 23:38, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

last name

its not hard to see that Luigi's last name is indeed 'Mario'. it said so in the movie and all the games have it writen on the top. "Mario Bros." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.111.2.2 (talkcontribs) . maybe you are right afterall. The movie is NOT canon. So unless Nintendo states Luigi's last name, Mario and Luigi remain without last names. Eratticus 05:58, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Luigi's Mansion

How is this not mentioned at all in this article when it's Luigi's first official game for himself? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.127.102.255 (talkcontribs) .

Maybe because it was (in my opinion) a stupid game. Wesz 09:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC) Maybe it's no fun (to you)but to me it's more fun than dancing around like a circus clown with entranced mushrooms in Super Mario Sunshine (both games are for Nintendo Gamecube. But this isn't about YOUR opininon, it's about the truth or facts, and the fact is that besides the fact that Luigi also starred in the Where's Mario game, he was also in this game and we have to at least mention it--Trowa440[reply]

Luigi's powers

Right now the 'powers' section includes a statement that it's believed that Luigi has "control over gravity". Unless this if from some anime, instruction manual, or other source I'm unaware of, that seems like kind of a silly statement. Obviously, normal physics don't apply within the Mario universe. People routinely run up walls, walk on clouds, and jump twice their own height vertically -- plus, I'm guessing flying turtles would probably be somewhat less than aerodynamically sound in real life. So, does this assertion have a source? Because if not, I think it's better not to worry about concepts like "gravity" in the within Mushroom Kingdom. -- Lee Bailey(talk) 00:57, 2 June 2006 (UTC) Who ever told you that Luigi has control over gravity lied to you.[reply]

Development Section

I've added one, per other characters I've seen, in order to give the character some real-world background. Comments (and thoughtful edits, naturally!) would be extremely appreciated. I'm not sure if the tone is too conversational. I do have sources for all the information, although there might reference or two I have to add tommorrow. -- Lee Bailey(talk) 03:35, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Super Mario 2. when you hold jump you hover. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.231.147.166 (talkcontribs) .

Further Cleanup

In order to avoid having a lot of short sections, I've attempted to combine the sections on Luigi's age, personality, and popularity into a section called "character". All of these sections cover elements of the fictional character; I left powers separate for now. -- Lee Bailey(talk)

I removed this section...
There is also an officially licensed tee-shirt bearing the slogan "I Scored With The Princess", featuring an image of Luigi and Peach running whilst holding hands (although it does look more like Peach is being pulled by Luigi rather than running alongside him. Also the picture used is from Super Mario Bros. 3. official artwork. In the original artwork, Luigi and the Princess are running beside Toad while Raccoon Mario flies above). This tee-shirt is an authorised piece of merchandise by Nintendo of America, however it may just be a tongue-in-cheek joke, and doesn't necessarily have any baring on the canon of the game series. It is interesting to note though that the image on the tee-shirt has the "L" on Luigi's cap removed. This might suggest that the designers were trying to avoid the fact that it is blatantly Luigi in the depicted artwork.
...because unless I've missed an alternate design of this shirt, it appears that the design is not in color. Without the red/green indicator, there's no reason to assume this isn't supposed to be Mario. Yes, that's based on stock art of Luigi, but if you compare the shirt image here [1] with the original image at http://soulrain.tripod.com/LAS/pics/082500/il_smb_36.jpg (hosted by tripod, so copy/paste into browser) ... you can see the original image already included Luigi pulling the Princess by her arm, as he, Princess, and Toad are all running away from something -- not particularly romantic. It appears this is just cheap image recycling. This might have even been an unlicenced shirt design originally; I'm noticed a lot of inaccurate, unofficially looking merchandise coming from Nintendo these days. In any case, I don't think we should be basing our Luigi/Princess speculation on this. (And can you really say it's fair to describe that as "holding hands" anyway?) -- Lee Bailey(talk)
The moustache says it all. Mario's 'stache is wavy at th bottom, and Luigi's is not. That is definitely Luigi. General Guy (talk) 19:50, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, personally, when I say Luigi, I think in this character. Google returns information about this character first and foremost. The cases that are shown in the disambiguation are not really notable compared with Luigi Mario (I don't want to say a saint is not notable, but if you were talking about a saint, you would likely search for St. Luigi, Saint Luigi or similar). I remember reading somewhere that Wikipedia should go with the "less shocking result": if the casual user inputs Luigi in the search box, where should he arrive? However, PSP exists and is a disambiguation link (I would think just because Paint Shop Pro is a very common search result), both PC and P.C. exists and are disambiguation links, ET exists and is a disambiguation link, etc, I would not really care if Luigi were a disambiguation link, even though common sense states it should not be. -- ReyBrujo 12:56, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • To be honest, I really don't care. I prefer Luigi to be the character, due to its popularity, and the unlikely event that people searching for it want someone else. Looking at the amount of redirects going into Luigi Orione, I really doubt that anyone searching for that will end up here. The only other Luigi article of worth is for a 60s Italian singer, and I think that this is easily the most wanted article. - Hahnchen 23:19, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Clearly Luigi is just as popular as his brother Mario. And as you can tell, Mario's page is just named "Mario". Any real person with these first names will also have a last name as well. -SaturnYoshi THE VOICES 02:49, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why not Luigi Mario? The film named the characters Mario Mario and Luigi Mario (though the film may not be considered canon) and they are the Mario Brothers, suggesting their last name is Mario. --Geopgeop 03:51, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A few questions

"He is also described as being smarter than Mario in the Mario Party instruction manual"

Just a few questions: Why mention the Mario party manual at all in the text, and not simply provide a link to some page with it? Is it because manuals are, occasionally, not included when discussing canon aspects of a game? (Male/Female Birdo).

Naming

After a discussion in the Donkey Kong article, I decided to remove the info in this article that says that Mario and Luigi were named after a pizza parlor. If anyone has any qualms, raise them here.

I'm pretty sure I saw it in a Nintendo Power magazine a while back. I'd have to sift through my old issues because I have no clue which one it could have been. It was in the letters section though. Kuribo 11:30, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I already put the information back in before I saw this! But at any rate I don't see any rationale to remove it in the first place. The information does not state that both Luigi and Mario named after the pizza parlor, only Luigi. Therefore it doesn't conflict with the other source stating that Mario was named after Mario Segali. Like Kuribo I've also seen it in various Nintendo magazines, maybe I could dig one up as well to provide an additional source...Kingston Jr. 05:18, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Next Luigi Game

I heard something on an UK magazine about a next Luigi game. It stated that Shigeru Miyamoto would be the chief director, and the game would have a similiar (or a connective) plot to Super Mario 64. I would like to hear your opinions about it because I'm not sure if it is true. Mr. Mario 192 20:00, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does this have to do with editing the article? It would help if you actually were specific about the magazine and what exactly was said, as all article content must be verifiable by reliable sources. "I heard something" is insufficient. Otherwise, I recommend you heed the talk page guidelines, which state: "it is usually a misuse of a talk page to continue to argue any point that has not met policy requirements." Dancter 01:05, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It appears this bit has now been added to the article. I slapped it with a {{fact}} tag rather than removing it outright, though somebody needs to find a way to cite it quickly or it's going to be removed. Even if it is cited, it's still possible it may be removed depending on the reliability of the magazine in question (I know Wikipedia doesn't report rumors, but we have in the past reported when typically reliable video game publications reveal details of games not yet disclosed publicly by the developers). Haha, yeah, it's scary. It's also a popular internet meme known as "WEEGEE." I kid you not, however, that depiction of Luigi does exist in certain versions of Mario is Missing. Kuribo (talk) 06:40, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protect Request

I just restored a previously deleted section, and restored the SMB 2 (JPN and USA version) info.

Now, before this page gets vandalised again, I am requesting that this page be at least semi-protected. This has gone far enough, and action needs to be taken ASAP. Brittany Ka (talk) 12:23, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rolled up pant legs

He also appears in the Super Smash Bros. series, the most recent game in that series being Super Smash Bros. Brawl.[7] Like many of the characters in the game, Luigi's design was updated specifically for Brawl, gaining more detailed overalls and gloves, as well as slightly rolled up sleeves on his overalls.

should be rolled up pant legs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.196.252.158 (talk) 19:12, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main image

Whose idea was it to put Luigi's artwork from Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the main image? It was intended to be used in the "Appearances in other games" section and nothing more. Furthermore, the Brawl image is just a one-off redesign and does not reflect Luigi's upcomming appearances such as Mario Kart Wii. — NES Boy (talk) 00:34, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How come there is no image right now? Useight (talk) 06:23, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

super Luigi Galaxy!!

someone submit his super mario galaxy involvment! come on! how can you not be on top of that already?Madhatter9max (talk) 21:50, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ok I saw it listed in the section "other games", but that's still not right. it goes in the mario bros. series.Madhatter9max (talk) 21:53, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We still gotta find a new image !

The image in the article got deleted, can anyone who knows evrything about copyright policy upload a new one and prove the it is copyrighted ? --Alex 8194 (talk) 15:23, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can try in Super Mario Wiki [2] because in the Mario article, someone uploaded the image of him there and it didn't get deleted. --Alex 8194 (talk) 14:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I moved the image at the bottom of the article to the infobox. FightingStreet (talk) 22:15, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I guess I uploaded an unacceptable image (just for the sake of getting an image on the page). I don't deal with images, but I'm glad we've got something there now. I hope we can keep one there for more than a couple weeks at a time. Useight (talk) 22:23, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It probably won't last very long, as it doesn't contain an FUR for why it should be included in Luigi. The Prince (talk) 22:30, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? It does contain one. We're talking about Image:Luigibrawl.jpg right? FightingStreet (talk) 22:35, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it needs a rationale similar to this one. The current FUR is too vague. The Prince (talk) 22:39, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The template is actually newer than this text which gets copy-pasted everywhere. Are you sure the image can be deleted? From what I've seen, only the images that have no FUR at all ever get deleted (by bots, moreover, not even human users). FightingStreet (talk) 22:43, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I've experienced before that images with vague FURs have been deleted, or placed with this template {{di-disputed fair use rationale}}. The Prince (talk) 22:52, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
