Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is a Nintendo DS console role-playing game based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It is being developed by Canadian RPG developer BioWare, who is now part of Electronic Arts. The game is scheduled to be released in 2008 in North America and Europe.[2]

A preview of the game was featured in the February 2008 issue of the Nintendo Power magazine, giving details on the game features and confirming its name. It also confirmed that there will be 11 playable characters; however, only 7 are currently known at this time.[3] The interview also states that the game will feature areas and music from previous Sonic games ranging from Emerald Town to more classic fields such as Green Hill Zone, Mystic Ruins and Central City.

Gameplay

In the current build of the game, special attacks are made by rhythmically tapping and dragging on indicated locations on the touch screen of the Nintendo DS, much like Elite Beat Agents. These are done using "Fatigue Points", which are similar to "Magic Points" (MP) in other RPGs. The player can also choose which attributes to increase when leveling up, and special attacks can be bought using rings as currency. The battle system will also allow for team attacks, said of Chrono Trigger, or Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. When in open areas, a map is displayed on the top screen as well as the members of the current team; while inside buildings or caves the top screen reverts to showing an expanded view of the area, the controls will be done through the use of the stylus instead of the d-pad much like Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. The game will have two acts, one set in a standard Sonic area, while the other one will take place in a "darker world". There will also be sidequests in the game.[3] There will be over 20 different areas to explore. There would be places like Angel's Island, Eggman fortress city and players will be able to travel through a 'wormhole' to a different dimension. The game will invovle dodging obstacles and solving puzzles. Players would be able to collect and trade chaos online. Each Chao will have it's own power-up abilities which would help with combat. Players can exchange these via DS wireless.

Shade, a mysterious entity.

Sonic is on vacation from defeating Eggman two years ago. He gets a call from Tails that Knuckles has been kidnapped by a group called the Marauders, and that six Chaos Emeralds are missing.

According to BioWare, Eggman will not be the main villain, but he will be a "more credible bad guy again". The game will also have fully animated cut scenes.[3] According to Nintendo Power magazine, "The second act takes place in a darker world than we're accustomed to seeing in Sonic games".

The game also introduces a new character named Shade. However, at this time it is still unknown who or what Shade is, nor is it known which side she is on, or if she will be a neutral character.

BioWare has stated that they want to expand on the characters and tie up loose ends left by previous installments of the franchise.

Confirmed Playable Characters

Development

Development began in 2006 when Bioware began to look into a handheld video game project to start, and had over 30 people involved.[4]

"A Race To Name" Fan Interaction

On February 19th 2008, SEGA announced that they would be giving fans the opportunity to vote on the name of a hostile alien race that would appear within the game. From March 3rd to March 14th, fans will be invited to vote on SEGA Europe's Sonic portal Sonic City for their preferred name. The poll is now closed. The winner was supposed to be announced on March the 15th but was delayed due to Sonic City going through essential maintenance. The new aliens look entirely metal but glow a bright blue from the inside. They appear to lack a face and most of their right arm is made up of crystal and a large energy orb in their left shoulder. They are almost three times the size of Sonic.[5]

These are the candidates.

  • The Bluchaos
  • The Crushers
  • The Darknood
  • The Dusk
  • The Gravitus
  • The Guardian
  • The Icebo
  • The Psykore
  • The Zoah

On March 18 2008, the winner of the naming contest was announced on the Sonic City blog as The Zoah.[6]
